The system of wound healing is very complex biological processing that includes inflammatory, reepithelialization, and matrix construction. For identification of the transitional pathway of the keratinocytes, we have employed immunohistochemical analysis using cytokeratin antibody after wounding. Epithelium in skin of the frog(Bombina orientalis) was examined with transmission electron microscopy. Cytokeratin was expressed in normal basal and gland cavity cells. At 3-hour basal layer cells were strong positive, however cells of the upper layer were negative reaction. Day1 and 2 after post-wounding, regenerating epithelial cell layer was positive reaction, especially basal layer cells were strong positive. At day 10 after wounding, the degree of positive reaction to basal cells of regenerating epithelial tissue was equal to day 7 wound tissue. At day of 19th, basal and spinous layer cells were strong positive reaction. Regenerating epithelial cells were positive but some basal cells were strong positive at day 27. From this result, we identified that the migration of the keratinocytes in amphibian skin wounds is initiated from basal layer fells and the keratinocytes migrate into basal and middle of the wound area.
The migration and proliferation of keratinocytes are key events in re-epithelization, itself a major phase in the wound healing process. Cuscuta japonica Choisy (CJC) is used as a traditional medicine to improve liver, heart, and intestinal function, and its extracts are reported to have various biological properties such as whitening, anti-oxidancy, and an anti-acne effect. However, it is not yet known in particular whether or not CJC essential oil (CJCEO) affects skin regeneration. In the present study, we isolated CJCEO by solvent extraction and tested its effect on wound healing responses using normal human keratinocytes, namely HaCaT cells. We found that CJCEO induced proliferation as well as migration in HaCaT cells in a dose-dependent manner. Compared with a control group, CJCEO treatment at 250 ㎍/ml increased proliferation by 239.98±5.51% in HaCaT cells in a dose and migration by 124.86±6.06%. Moreover, the oil induced sprout outgrowth and, at 250 ㎍/ml, increased collagen synthesis by 148.56±15.47% in HaCaT cells. These results demonstrate that CJCEO may promote skin regeneration and wound healing by increasing the migration, proliferation, and collagen synthesis of HaCaT cells. We therefore suggest that CJCEO could be used as a cosmetic material.

In the present study, we extracted the hydrosol from flower of Chrysanthemum boreale Makino (CBMF hydrosol) by steam distillation and tested the effect of the CBMF hydrosol on skin regeneration using normal human keratinocytes (HaCaTs). CBMF hydrosol induced proliferation as well as migration in HaCaTs in a dose-dependent manner. Treatment with $1{\mu}g/mL$ CBMF hydrosol increased proliferation to $143.71{\pm}3.37%$ and migration to $139.98{\pm}5.72%$ compared with a control group. CBMF hydrosol also significantly enhanced the phosphorylations of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (Erk) 1/2 and serine/threonine-specific protein kinase (Akt) in HaCaTs. Moreover, CBMF hydrosol dose-dependently induced sprout outgrowth in HaCaTs. These results demonstrate that CBMF hydrosol has skin regeneration and wound healing activity in HaCaTs. Therefore, CBMF hydrosol could be used as a potential cosmetic material.

Astilbe (Saxifragaceae) is a genus well known for its disjunctive distribution in Asia and eastern North America. In this study, we reconstructed a molecular phylogeny of the genus using the sequences of ITS regions of nuclear ribosomal DNA. A total of 17 species representing major lineage of Astilbe and closely related taxa were included in the phylogenetic analyses. We obtained a Bayesian phylogenetic tree in which Saxifragopsis was positioned as a sister group to Astilbe. The Japanese endemic species, A.platyphylla was the most basal lineage within the genus. This species is well known for its distinct morphological features such as unisexual flowers, apetaly, and calyx with 7-11 lobes. Two species, A. biternata, a New World representative of the genus, and A. rivularis widely distributed in S. Asia, branched off early in the evolution of Astilbe. The remaining species formed a strongly supported core clade, which diverged into two robust geographical lineages: the first ("Japonica" clade) of species distributed in Japan, Taiwan, and Philippines and the other ("Rubra" clade), of taxa in China and Korea. The ITS phylogeny indicates that the Bering land bridges were the major route for the origin and dispersal of A. biternata. The two Taiwanese taxa and A. philippinensis were found to derive from the Japanese member, as the genus advanced southwards. The ITS phylogeny suggests that apetaly originated independently at least two times within the genus. Our results do not support Engler's classification system of the genus based on the leaf type (simple vs. compound), but reaffirm Hara's taxonomic idea which primarily considered the features of calyx.
GM-CSF is a multipotent growth factor, which also plays an important role during the process of wound healing. rrhGM-CSF was specifically produced from rice cell culture in our laboratory (Hanson Biotech Co., Ltd, Daejeon). The rrhGMCSF contains more oligosaccharide side chains than any other types of GM-CSF. This work was taken to evaluate the influence on wound healing of rrhGM-CSF in male golden hamsters. Full thickness skin defects of 9 mm in diameter were made in the back of hamsters, and 100 ${\mu}L$ ointment containing rrhGM-CSF 50 ${\mu}g/mL$ was applied. Control groups were given ointment without rrhGM-CSF. The wound sizes were relatively reduced and skin was well regenerated in the experimental group compared with the control group. Structurally, reepithelialization and architecture of the skin following injury were well accomplished in the experimental group. And also, positive reaction of PCNA of the skin following injury was more prominent in rrhGM-CSF containing ointment treatment group. Since this type of GM-CSF has highly glycosylated side chains, the effectiveness might be retain longer and stable, regarding acceleration of wound healing in the animal model. The present study has important implications for further development of the therapeutic manipulation of wound healing using rrhGM-CSF.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the distribution pattern of CGRP immunoreactive nerve fibers in the healing mucosa of extracion wound. Maxillary 1st molars of rats were extracted. All extraction sites and adjacent tissues of 3 groups of rats(1-week, 2-week and 4-week groups) were removed en bloc and processed for immunostaining and were subjected to light microscopic examination. The results obtained were as follows; In 1-week group, there was no difference in the distribution pattern of CGRP immunoreactive nerve fiber between epithelial margin adjacent to extraction socket and normal gingival epithelium. In 2-week group, some CGRP-immunoreactive nerve fibers were seen in epithelial layer. In 4-week group, many intercellular CGRP immunoreactive nerve fibers were abundant in all layers of immature epithelium characterized by scab on the mucosa and thick keratinized cell layer with irregular surface. Intraepithelial CGRP immunoreactive nerve fibers were reduced to normal level in adjacent mature epithelium. These results suggest that density of CGRP immunoreactive nerve fibers are increased transiently in epithelium during reepithelialization process and CGRP released from these nerve fibers may play an important role in the reepithelialization in the wound healing.
The purpose of this study is to examine the characteristics of man's boots in the Joseon Dynasty and compared them with those of the Ming and Qing Dynasty to find the influential relationships between them. Boots in the Joseon Dynasty are divided into several kinds such as Heukgwejapihwa, Hheuksapihwa(黑斜皮靴), Heukpihwa(黑皮靴), Mokhwa(木靴), Hyeopgeumhwa(挾金靴), Suhwaja (水靴子), Jeonpihwa, Gijahwa(起子靴), and Baekhwa(白靴). In addition, Jeong(精: footwear) was put inside boots. They tend to be named according to their materials or ornaments on them. First, Jeong put inside the boots is regarded as footwear for the comfort of the feet or protection against cold. Mokhwa appears in literature around the 19th century. As shown by remains and paintings of those days, it is considered to have become the common name of boots as it underwent many changes. On the other hand, a book in the era of King Gojong includes pictures of Suhwaja. Compared to Hukpihwa in the same book. The topside seems to have been raised in order to make the wearer who put on a military uniform feel comfortable when walking, since the bottom piece is hard. Baekhwa is worn not only with funeral garments but also with Sibok(時服), one of official uniforms. Boots in the Joseon Dynasty had been made following the design of the Ming Dynasty since official uniforms were conferred upon King Gongmin in the late Koryo Dynasty. But turning the late Joseon Dynasty its detailed design changed little by little. The topside of the boots became more round, the entrance part became wider, height of the shoes became taller, and the bottom piece became parallel to the ground.

Purpose: Pilonidal sinus is a frequent disease that occurs mostly in hairy young men, defined as chronic inflammation and infection of the postsacral sinuses. Wide excision of the affected area is the treatment of choice. Many techniques have been described to cover the defect. However none appears to be the ideal procedure to prevent infection, recurrence, and delayed wound healing. We present the results of an alternative technique that we performed by using partial deepithelized gluteal transposition flap for reconstruction of the defect following wide excision. Methods: From October 2004 to September 2007, we performed the partial deepithelized gluteal transposition flap method on 6 patients. We modified the transposition flap techniques by deepithelialising the medial parts of the flap and burying them under the opposing edge of the flap. The results were compared with previous studies and evaluated regarding duration of surgery, size of defect, hospitalization periods, and complications. Results: All the flaps were healed well with no partial or complete loss of the flap. Hospitalization and immobilization periods were acceptably shortened. Recurrence was not seen. The aesthetic outcome was also satisfactory and all patients were satisfied with the results. Conclusion: The main advantage of our techniques is using healthy tissues to obliterate the dead space, to provide an extra-cushion, and to prevent deep dehiscence. We believe that the partial deepithelized gluteal transposition flap is a good alternative method for treatment of pilonidal sinus.
Catechin (CTEC) is well-known as a very powerful antioxidant, containing the effects of anti-inflammation and skin wound healing. In this study, CTEC/${\beta}$-cyclodextrin (${\beta}$-CD) nanoparticles were incorporated into poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/pectin (PT) hydrogel. The composite was designed for the induction of re-epithelializaton in skin wound. CTEC/${\beta}$-CD nanoparticles were prepared by a molecular complex method. The size of the CTEC nanoparticles formed in the hydrogel was in the range of $250{\pm}17.5$ nm. The incorporation efficiency of CTEC in the nanoparticles was 74%. The cumulative amounts of CTEC released from the hydrogel containing CTEC nanoparticles in the buffers of pH7.4 and 5.5 were $86.51{\pm}3.14%$ and $35.95{\pm}2.14%$ of total CTEC loaded in the hydrogel within 72 h, respectively. Also, in the wound healing test, the CTEC nanoparticles-loaded PVA/PT hydrogel showed faster healing of the wound made in rat dorsum than the CTEC gel.
The advantages of the $CO_2$ laser are offset by the delay in laser wound healing secondary to thermal damage. To minimize the undesirable thermal damage of the $CO_2$ laser, investigators have developed technical advances in the delivery system of the laser energy. This study compared tissue healing of the continuous and the pulsed modes $CO_2$ laser wounds in an animal surgery model. Five healthy Landrace and Yorkshire mixed breeds of both genders were used (45-51 kg, 4-6 months old, three males and two females). A full thickness wound of skin ($2{\times}2{\times}2cm^2$) was made over on the each pig's both sides of dorsal midline at 0, 7, 14, and 18 days. The wounds created at 18, 14, 7 and 0 days were named post-wounding day (PWD) 3, 7, 14 and 21, respectively. In each pig, one wound (left side) was treated pulsed $CO_2$ laser and the other wound (right side) was treated continuous wave $CO_2$ laser. Each wound was closed with two interrupted suture of 3-0 sutures. At 21 days after initial wounding, each wound was taken for histological evaluations. The degrees of reepithelialization were performed more prominently in the pulsed mode group than in the continuous mode group. The degrees of granulation were greater significantly in pulsed mode group than those in the continuous mode on PWD 3 (p < 0.05). The degrees of fibroblasts in the pulsed mode group were greater significantly in comparison to those in the continuous mode group on PWD 7, (p < 0.05). In conclusion, reepithelialization, granulation and fibroblasts in the pulsed mode group were greater markedly in comparison to those in the continuous mode group. It was considered that pulsed mode $CO_2$ laser was more suitable for the skin incision than the continuous mode $CO_2$ laser.
