  • In general, when an existing pier is enlarged and reinforced using a small diameter pile, bonded anchor with deformed reinforcing bars is used to maintain the integrity of the joint. However, in the case of bonded anchors, the performance depends largely on the type of joint material. Nevertheless, unlike mechanical anchors, there is no standard method for designing appropriate design methods and proper performance evaluation. Therefore, in this study, the performance of the anchoring anchor was evaluated by performing a model experiment using the reinforcing bars and anchor reinforcing bars. Experimental results show that the structural performance of the unbonded specimen is the best, and the failure mode is the punching shear failure. The deflection of the end of the member is smaller than that of the unconnected member, The deflection of the connected member is larger than the deflection of the small connected member. As the load increases, the possibility of slippage of the anchor steel or fold connection rebar is high.

  • An experimental study on the structural behavior of connection types between approach slab and integral abutment has been done for three typical bar connections. Typical hinge style reinforcing bar detail for its connection is preferred in order to accommodate rotation of the approach slab among engineers. However, the straight horizontal bars can be used as connection detail accomodate structural capacity. Total six specimens with three types of rebar detail are tested for direct tensile and bending load. The characteristic structural behaviors are carefully monitored and all the strain gauge data obtained are analyzed. It is shown that the structural performance of all the specimens well exceed its design allowance. Several design suggestions are given based on careful reviews on the experiment.

  • Both ends of the hoop reinforcement in the reinforced concrete (RC) columns subjected to lateral loading must necessarily be bent by 135° so as to ensure a sufficient level of ductility. However, as this reinforcement is extremely difficult to construct, this requirement is often not satisfied at construction sites. This study entailed an experimental investigation on RC columns subjected to cyclic lateral loading equipped with steel clip-type implements that were developed to replace the complicated 135° hoop reinforcement details. Four RC column specimens were manufactured, and the main test parameters included the use of high-strength concrete and steel clip-type implements. Furthermore, three-dimensional finite element models were employed to evaluate the structural performances of the test specimens via nonlinear analyses. The results of the test and finite element analyses indicate that the RC columns with the steel clip-type implements exhibit structural performances equal to or better than those with the 135° hoop reinforcement details. Further, the finite element analysis results agree well with the test results.

  • Generally, significant amount of reinforcements are used in nuclear power plant structures and it may cause several potential problems during the construction. In particular, it is more difficult to pour concrete into structural member joint area than other areas because of the significant congestion of the joint area due to a lot of hooked bars, embedded materials, and other reinforcements. The purpose of this study is to solve these problems due to the reinforcement congestion by using the high-strength(ASTM A615 Gr.80) headed deformed bars of large-sized diameter(43 mm & 57 mm) in nuclear power plant structures as a alternative of standard hooked bars. In order to use headed deformed bars effectively, It is necessary to find the method how to relax limits on their use while maintaining or improving the anchorage capacity. Therefore, this study will analyze the results of tests planned to evaluate the influence of the restricted variables, such as bar size, yield strength, clear cover thickness.

  • In order to clarify the structural performances of Welded Deformed Steel Bar Mats (WDSBM), the research stated includes the tests for standard hook of top bars of slab in concrete slab-wall joints, the tests for embedment length of top bar of slab, and the development strength tests for standard hook. The test results are as follows; (1) For slab-wall joints using WDSBM as reinforcement in slab, if the top bars of WDSBM are spliced by ordinary bars with sufficient development length and size, it is enough for the strength and crack control. (2) When WDSBM of slab is spliced in joint, the strength is increased with the embedment of bars of this WDSBM into wall. Beyond peak strength, however, ductility is diminished to that as no splice due to pull-out failure. (3) For slab-wall system, ultimate strain of concrete for flexural compression zone in lower surface of slab seems much greater than that of normal concrete beam. The reason is that normal concrete beam has the joint with $180^{\circ}$, however slab-wall joint has the $90^{\circ}$ of which concrete can be confined.

  • Recently, Appendix A of ACI 318∼02 Code introduced the Strut-and-Tie Model(STM) procedure in shear design of deep flexural members. The STM procedure is widely used in the design of concrete regions where the distribution of longitudinal strains is significantly nonlinear, such as deep beams, beams with large openings, corbels, and dapped-end beams. Experimental study included five high-strength reinforced concrete deep beams with different detailing schemes for the horizontal and vertical reinforcement. The specimens were designed as simply supported beams subjected to concentrated loads on the top face and supported on the bottom face. At failure, all specimen exhibited primary diagonal crack running from the support region to the point load. Specimens which had mechanical anchorages(terminators) gives better representation of the load-carrying mechanism than the specimen had standard 90-degree anchorage at failure in deep flexural members. Based on the test results, shear design procedures contained in the ACI 318-99 Code, Appendix A of the ACI 318-02 Code, CSA A23.3-94 Code and CIRIA Guide-2 were evaluated. The Shear design of ACI 318-99 Code, Appendix A of the ACI 318-02 Code and CIRIA Guide-2 shown to be conservative predictions from 10% to 36% in the shear strength of the single-span deep beam which was tested. ACI 318-99 Code was the lowest standard deviation.

  • Due to the characteristic of culvert structure, the standard section of the culvert has been established and applied in field. However, this becomes a limitation in selecting a section design corresponding to various field conditions although it can improve the design and applicability of culvert structure. In order to overcome this limitation, we have developed the design and application technology of culvert structure corresponding to the field conditions that various shapes of culvert structure can be covered by assembly of precast segments. Because the structural characteristics of assembling-type waterway culvert structure, the thickness of structure and amount of reinforcing rods can vary according to the fixation or internal hinge status in the connection part of precast segments. This has a strong influence on the applicability and economic efficiency of culvert structure. Accordingly, in order to suggest a reasonable modeling technique of segment connection parts, this study has conducted the field experiment and numerical analysis. According to the results of field experiment and numerical analysis, the slab, wall and base slab with mortar splice sleeves have shown that the assembling-type of waterway culvert structure behaves like an integrated structure.
