Electrical and Mechanical Properties of Silicone Rubber for High Voltage Insulation (고압절연용 실리콘고무의 전기특성 및 물성에 관한 연구)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the influences or the vinyl content of polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS) and type of silica on the electrical and mechanical properties of silicone rubber far high voltage insulation. When the content of vinyl group was increased, cross-linking density and hardness were increased, and tensile strength, volume resistivity and tracking resistance were improved. The mechanical and electrical properties of silicone rubber reinforced with fumed silica were higher than those of silicone rubber reinforced with precipitated silica. It was found that the electrical and mechanical properties of silicone rubber were influenced greatly by the water contents of silica.

  • Recently polymer insulators are being used for outdoor high voltage applications. Polymer insulators for transmission line have significant advantages over porcelain and glass insulators, especially for ultra-high voltage transmission lines. Their advantages are light weight, vandalism resistance and hydrophobicity. Polymer insulators are a relatively new technology, but their expected life is still unknown. Therefore these estimating technique are very important. Their life time is related to weathering and operating condition. Multi-aging test is requested because aging factor is occurred by multi-aging than unique aging. The aging test about polymer insulators have mainly carried out by IEC 61109. This paper presents multi-stress chamber experiments and tracking wheel test to examine the tracking and erosion performance of polymer insulator for transmission. Multi-stress testing is able to demonstrate deficiencies of polymer insulator materials and designs, including the nature of interfaces in insulation design. We have investigated IEC 61109 Annex C (5000h aging test) and CEA tracking wheel test as test methods of artificial accelerated aging. The aging degree of polymer insulator is estimated by leakage current, measurement of hydrophobicity degree, damage conditions of insulator surface, withstand voltage test etc.

  • Recently, the polymer insulators that are used for high voltage applications have some advantages such as light weight, small size, vandalism resistance, hydrophobicity and easy making process. During outdoor service of polymer insulators, the surface of the insulating material is frequently subjected to moisture and contamination that lead to dry band arcing. Their tracking resistance, erosion resistance, end sealing and shed design are very important because dry band arcing causes degradation of polymer surface. The shape design of porcelain insulator is formalized but design standard for polymer insulator is no standardized up to now, much research is necessary in real condition. In this paper, the surface and tracking properties of polymer suspension insulator for power transmission is investigated with ICP-AES, SEM, EDX, tracking wheel test and flashover voltage test. The diagnosis of insulator sample in tracking test hass been analyzed by leakage current STRI Guide and thermal image.

  • There have been numerous accelerated aging laboratory tests for evaluating suitability of polymeric materials and devices. Aging test for materials and its full scale device has been conducted, but poor correlation of aging test such as service experience were observed. Service experience plays a key role in the utility section of composite insulators. A meaningful and reliable accelerated aging test is needed for evaluating composite insulator. During the service these insulators are subjected to aging stress such as humidity, pollution, and electrical field, and erosion and tracking of the weathershed occurs. This paper presents the criteria of reliability evaluation and evaluation facilities for 22.9 kV suspension composite insulator. We adopt the criteria of reliability evaluation consist of two test methods. One is CEA tracking wheel test for examining the tracking and erosion performance of composite insulator. The other is multi-stress aging test for examining effects of environmental factors such as UV, temperature, humidity, etc on composite insulator.

The shape design of porcelain insulator is formalized but design standard for polymer insulator is no standardized up to now, much research is necessary in real condition. In this paper, the aging property of polymer insulator with shed shape(regular, alternative type) is analyzed through numerical analysis, CEA(canadian electricity association) tracking wheel test and IEC 61109 Annex C.

Surface and Physical Properties of Polymer Insulator Coated with Diamond-Like Carbon Thin Film (DLC 박막이 코팅된 폴리머 애자의 표면 및 물리적 특성)

  • In this study, we tried finding new materials to improve the stain resistance properties of polymer insulating materials. Using the filtered vacuum arc source (FVAS) with a graphite target source, DLC thin films were deposited on silicon and polymer insulator substrates depending on their thickness to confirm the surface properties, physical properties, and structural properties of the thin films. Subsequently, the possibility of using a DLC thin film as a protective coating material for polymer insulators was confirmed. DLC thin films manufactured in accordance with the thickness of various thin films exhibited a very smooth and uniform surface. As the thin film thickness increased, the surface roughness value decreased and the contact angle value increased. In addition, the elastic modulus and hardness of the DLC thin film slightly increased, and the maximum values of elastic modulus and hardness were 214.5 GPa and 19.8 GPa, respectively. In addition, the DLC thin film showed a very low leakage current value, thereby exhibiting electrical insulation properties.

  • In this paper, we investigated the surface properties of polymer insulators to improve electrical insulation performance. First, after washing the polymer insulator in various ways, its contact angle was increased, thereby improving the hydrophobic properties and electrical insulation properties. In addition, TiO2 thin films, which have been used as a photocatalytic material and have been applied to the polymer insulator surface of to enhance the surface and electrical insulating properties. For the sputtering method, the contact angle after coating the TiO2 thin film increased with increasing RF power, but it was lower compared to that before coating, indicating that the hydrophobic properties of the surface were slightly deteriorated. Consequently, the electrical properties of the polymer-insulating material were maintained or improved after the TiO2 thin-film coating.

Effect of Porcelain/Polymer Interface on the Microstructure, Insulation Characteristics and Electrical Field Distribution of Hybrid Insulators (자기재/폴리머 계면이 하이브리드 애자의 미세구조, 절연특성과 전계분포에 미치는 영향)

  • Hybrid insulators that have the advantages of both porcelain (high mechanical strength and chemical stability) as well as polymer (light weight and high resistance to pollution) insulators, can be used in place of individual porcelain and polymer insulators that are used for both mechanical support as well as electrical insulation of overhead power transmission lines. The most significant feature of hybrid insulators is the presence of porcelain/polymer interfaces where the porcelain and polymer are physically bonded. Individual porcelain and polymer insulators do not have such porcelain/polymer interfaces. Although the interface is expected to affect the mechanical/electrical properties of the hybrid insulator, systematic studies of the adhesion properties at the porcelain/polymer interface and the effect of the interface on the insulation characteristics and electric field distribution of the hybrid insulator have not been reported. In this study, we fabricated small hybrid insulator specimens with various types of interfaces and investigated the effect of the porcelain/polymer interface on the microstructure, insulating characteristics, and electric field distribution of the hybrid insulators. It was observed that the porcelain/polymer interface of the hybrid insulator does not have a significant effect on the insulating characteristics and electric field distribution, and the hybrid insulator can exhibit electrical insulating properties that are similar or superior to those of individual porcelain and polymer insulators.

During outdoor service of polymer insulators, the surface of the insulating material is frequently subjected to moisture and contamination that lead to dry band arcing. Their tracking resistance, erosion resistance, end sealing and shed design are very important because dry band arcing causes degradation of polymer surface. Aging test to estimate life property of polymer insulator is executed through several international standard such as IEC 61109 and CEA tracking wheel test, but is not getting clear conclusion yet. There are two methods in the diagnosis method of polymer insulator such as off-line and on-line. The diagnosis methods in off-line are external condition analysis by the eye, contaminant analysis on surface, surface analysis, pollution withstand voltage test, power frequency flashover voltage test, lightning impulse flashover test, tensile fracture load test and flexural load test. Polymer material is also investigated it's tracking resistance by adding surface active agent in IEC 587. In this paper, the tracking performance of polymer insulator with salt solution which is added surface active agent. The diagnosis of insulator sample has been analyzed by leakage current and visual examination, STRI guide and thermal image camera.

  • Corona on polymer materials causes deterioration by the combined action of the discharge striking the surface and the action of certain chemical compounds that are formed by the discharges. In the design and manufacture of polymer insulators must be sufficiently large to avoid corona discharges, otherwise a shielding or corona ring (grading ring) needs to be installed on the insulator. To conduct this purpose, many researchers have investigated end-fitting of polymer insulator by voltage distribution simulation and electrical test. Grading rings are used to improve the performance of the insulator in multiple ways. They can reduce corona and associated audible noise and radio influence and television interference. The factors determining the uses of a grading ring are line voltage, geometry and dimensions of end fittings, geometry and dimensions of line hardware, and environmental conditions. In this paper, electrical property of polymer insulator with end-fitting design have been investigated by electrical field analysis, various end-fitting design, tracking wheel test, corona inception voltage and extinction voltage. Electrical field analysis is conducted by FEM program and various end-fitting is designed through this result. Designed end-fittings are manufactured and their performance is conducted by electrical performance test.
