The normal shell and the regenerated oyster shell, Crassostrea gigas, are separated according to the characteristics of inner shell morphology. To study characteristics of chitin obtained from the regenerated shell, chitin prepared by acid and alkali process is analyzed by FT-IR (Fourier transform infrared spectrometer) and XRD (X-ray Diffractometer). The content of insoluble protein in the normal shell was more than doubled as compared with that in the regenerated shell. A comparison of secondary structure of the normal shell and the regenerated shell revealed that the content of random of the regenerated shell was above 47%, indicating an amount in the structural unordered state. Through amino acid composition analysis and secondary protein structure of soluble protein isolated from the normal shell and the regenerated shell, it was found that there are differences in biomineralization strategy of the regenerated shell as compared to the normal shell. The relatively low hardness of the regenerated shell is caused by the change of amino acid composition and ordered secondary protein structure as compared to hardness of the normal shell.
Mechanical properties of shell powder containing mixed recycled plastics were investigated depending on the shell content and surface modification. First, shell powder and LDPE were compounded using the twin screw extruder to manufacture 40 wt% master batch(M/B), and the M/B was blended with LDPE to produce bulk specimens with 10, 20, 30 and 40 wt% shell content. To improve the compatibility of shell powder with mixed recycled plastics matrix, surface of shell powder was chemically modified with cations or cationic surfactant. Surface modified shell was also used to prepare bulk specimens with the same shell content. Mechanical property analysis showed obvious improvement for the surface modified shell containing bulk specimens compared to unmodified ones. These results can lead to the development of new applications for the mixed recycled plastics.

We investigated the mineralogical and chemical characteristics of oyster shell as the possible substitute for the limestone used as an absorbent of $SO_2$ gas. The oyster shells from Taean and Tongyeong were used for the comparison with limestone and those from Boyreong and Yeosu were additionally investigated. XRD results show that all shells are composed of calcite with the exception of the myostracum layer attached to adductor muscle and ligament, which is composed of aragonite. The marine sediments as impurities exist on the surface of shells or as inclusions in the shells. Calcite is the main mineral composition of the shell of barnacle which is also one of the impurities. The oyster shell is composed of three main layers; prismatic, foliated, and chalk. The oyster shell from Tongyeong with the largest shell size, has the smallest thickness of prismatic and foliated layers which contain protein called conchiolin, whereas that from Taean with the smallest shell size has the largest prismatic and foliated layers. The sizes of those two layers of the shells from Boryeong and Yeosu are larger than that from Tongyeong but smaller than Taean. Those differences are supposed to be due to the different growth environments because the oysters from Tongyeong are cultured under the sea while those from Taean are in the tidal zone. The oyster shells generally show higher amount of sulfur and phosphorus than limestone, mainly due to the composition of protein. Some elements such as Mg show significant variations in different layers. As for trace elements, Li shows much higher amount in oyster shells than limestone, suggesting the influence of the composition of the sea water on the formation of the oyster shells.

Large amounts of waste shells have been produced each year from shellfish raising industries located in Korean costal areas. Due to the limited space for the waste shell disposal, the related environmental problem has been a serious issue. It is believed that using the waste shells as a source of aggregate for mortar, concrete or bricks can be a good solution. In this research, possibility of utilizing waste shells as an aggregate of mortar is investigated. Waste shells of manila clam, cockle, clam, sea mussel, and oyster were properly crushed, sieved, and sorted to meet the requirements of the grading of standard fine aggregate. After that, the waste shells were used as partial and total replacement of the fine aggregate, and their absorption and 28-day compressive strengths of mortar were measured. In general, replacement of waste shells increased the absorption and decreased the strength. However, one specimen with cockle increased compressive strength as replacement ratio increased. Mortar with cockle of 50% and 100% replacement showed higher compressive strength than that of control mortar. This increase of compressive strength was found to be affected by the strong interfacial bonding properties of the cockle and a cement matrix.

About 300,000 tones of oyster shell are annually produced in Korea and, thus, a massive recycling plan is required. Many desulfurizing studies using oyster shells with chemical composition of $CaCO_3$ have been performed so far; however, most of them have focused on dry desulfurization. This study investigates the possibility of using oyster shells for wet desulfurization after calcination. For this, a simulated wet desulfurization facility of spray type was devised and compared the SOx-stripping characteristics of calcined oyster shell with those of limestone. The calcined oyster shell slurry indicate a better desulfurizability than the slurries of raw shell or limestone because the oyster shell transformed to a more reactive phase ($Ca(OH)_2$) by the calcination and hydration. Because of this reason, when the calcined oyster shell slurries were used, the reaction residue showed the higher gypsum ($CaSO_4{\cdot}2H_2O$) contents than any other cases. In the continuous desulfurization experiments, calcined oyster shell slurry showed a wider pH variation than limestone or raw oyster shell slurries, another clear indication of high reactivity of calcined oyster shells for $SO_2$ absorption. Our study also shows that the efficiency of wet desulfurization can be improved by the use of calcined oyster shells.
Industrial use of waste oyster shells is limited because of requiring excessive energy for converting natural oyster shells in the form of calcium carbonate ($CaCO_3$) into calcium oxide (CaO) for this purpose. This study aimed to develop energy-saving process for producing solidifying agent using waste oyster shells for backfill materials. It was suggested that oyster shells were converted to calcium sulfates which were mixed with sodium hydroxide solution and red clay, forming solid specimen. The optimal concentrations of sulfuric acid for sulfation of oyster shell and sodium hydroxide to generate calcium hydroxide ($Ca(OH)_2$), were determined. Unconfined compressive strength of solid specimen increased with increasing the content of solidifying agent while it increased also with increasing ratio of natural oyster shells to coal ash. The result clearly demonstrates that solidifying agent consisting of sulfuric acid-treated oyster shell, coal ash, and sodium hydroxide solution, can be effectively utilized for preparing backfill materials using natural oyster shell and coal ash. Sulfuric acid-treated oyster shell-based solidifying agent has not been previously developed and will contribute to broaden industrial application of waste oyster shells.
Oysters have been continuously produced from all around the world including South Korea every year. The oyster shell by-products accompanied by the oysters have caused the social and environmental problems due to the absence of any method or technique to deal with the by-products. In order to solve those problems, diverse researches and environmental friendly methods using the oyster shells are in development by now due to the possibility as cheap materials. In this review, we discuss the worldwide status of oyster shells and investigate the physical and chemical characteristics of the oyster shells. In addition, we discuss the recent trends about the sustainable methods to utilize the oyster shells.
