During the excavation to find ancient rice seeds from the peat layer (12,500-14,800 bp based on 14 dating samples) of Soro-ri, Cheongwon-gun near Cheongju city, we found not only old rice seeds, but also other organic materials including insect fossil skeletons. Although no complete specimen was found in this study, some body parts were diagnotic enough for identifying species. Among the identified insect fossils, two species were successfully identified based on their characteristic forewing morphologies, e.g., cross-ridges on forewing. The two identified species, Plateumaris sericea and Donacia flemola or near, belong to Donaciinae in Chrysomelidae, and their larvae are known to feed on the root of wetland plants, mainly in Poaceae or Cyperaceae. Such finding proved that a wetland environment was maintained in Soro-ri at that time, and was suitable for such insects to survive. Therefore, evidence from the fossilized rice seeds, together with these insect fossils, clearly proved that the environment at that time was suitable for rice, a common Poaceae species, growing.

The fuel characteristics and combustion behaviors of bituminous (Anglo) and sub-bituminous (Tanito) coals used in 500MW coal fired power plant have been investigated. With ashes of those coals, the ash fusibility is characterized with thermo mechanical analyzer, and the advanced ash slagging propensity, BHEL index, has been obtained. The melting-down of tanito coal ash happened in the temperature range of 1,200 to $1,250^{\circ}C$, and for anglo coal ash it occurred near $1,550^{\circ}C$. BHEL indices for two coals gives the high slagging propensity, and these are compared with the existing traditional indices which give different tendencies.
This study was conducted to examineboth the type of wood decay and the degree of degradation for the waterlogged woods (Alnus spp. and Fraxinus spp., about 5,700~5,900 year old), which were excavated at Higokri, Pyungteak in the west-coastal region of Korea. The transmission electron microscope (TEM) observation indicated the degradations by soft rot and bacteria were common in both woods. Erosion bacteria attacked gradually and irregularly from the secondary layer to compound middle lamella and often produced the cavity which was similar to soft-rot cavity but much smaller ones. Tunneling bacteria decomposed mainly $S_2$ layer. Though of highly degraded walls, the cells almost kept the original form with intact lignin-rich middle lamella, which were saturated by water. No marine borer's trace indicated that the sealine rise in the western coast of Korean peninsula during the climate optimum period in the holocene might not be high enough to submerge the Higokri area which locates about 2 km from the present sealine.
The aims of this study are to clarify the geomorphological development of a alluvial plain and discuss the vegetation environments and agriculture activities in the Wangpo-River alluvial plain at Neungsan-ri, Buyeo by analyzing geomorphological classification, sedimentary facies and age datings. The alluvial plain at Wangpo-River was formed by the influences of Geum-River with the sea-level rising during the Holocene. The basin of Wangpo-River consists of natural levees, back marsh-type alluvial plains, valley plains and hills. The natural levees by Geum-River largely distributes at the area where Wangpo-River flows to Geum-River and the alluvial plains at the middle and lower reach are the back marsh areas of Geum-River. Moreover, the area along Wangpo-River show higher contents of coarse materials and thinner peat sediments than the back marsh. The lower sandy deposits in the alluvium of Wangpo-River was formed with the influences of human in the Bronze Age during the sea level falling and the peaty deposits was formed due to the water level rising of Wangpo-River during the sea level rising in the early Iron Age.
Hundred pieces of peat woods(ca. 2500 years old) were excavated in 1995 at Hyunwhari, Pyungtaek in the west-central coast of the Korea Peninsula. Among them, 63 samples representing 21 trenches were selected for the species identification. Because most peat woods were rotten by fungi for long period, only 27 samples could be identified. Due to the deteriorated structure of peat woods, all samples were embedded in PEG(polyethylene glycol 2000) and then sectioned using a rotary microtome. Major species were Alnus spp.(55.6%), Fraxinus spp.(33.3%) and Quercus (Lepidobalanus)(11.1%). No conifers were found. The species composition indicates that the sample region was a swamp or lakeside, which appeared to be formed because of the sea-level rise after last-glacial period.

Due to diverse soil-forming environments and different purposes of the soil classification, numerous soil classification systems have been developed worldwide. The World Reference Base for Soil Resources (WRB) and the Soil Taxonomy of the United States are well-known in Korea. However, the German Soil Systematics based on somewhat different principles from the two former systems is little-known. The objective of this paper is therefore to give a short overview of the principles of the German Soil Systematics. The German Soil Systematics consists of a six-level hierarchical structure which comprises soil divisions, soil classes, soil types, soil subtypes, soil varieties, and soil subvarieties. Soils in Germany are firstly classified into one of four soil divisions according to the soil moist regime: terrestrial soils, semi-terrestrial soils, semi-subhydric/subhydric soils, and peats. Terrestrial soils are subdivided into 13 soil classes based on the stage of soil formation and the horizon differentiation. Semi-terrestrial soils are differentiated into four classes regarding the source of soil moist: groundwater, freshwater, saltwater, and seaside. Semi-subhydric/subhydric soils are subdivided into two classes: semi-subhydric and subhydric soils. Peats are classified into two classes of natural and anthropogenic origins. Classes can be compared to orders of the U.S. Taxonomy. Classes are subdivided into 29 soil types with regard to soil forming-processes for terrestrial soils, into 17 types with regard to the soil formation for semi-terrestrial soils, into five types with regard to the content of organic matter for semi-subhydric/subhydric soils, and also into five types with regard to peat-forming processes for peats. The soil mapping units in Germany are types, which can be additionally subdivided into ca. 220 subtypes, several thousands of varieties and subvarieties using detailed nuances of morphologic features of soil profile. Soil types can be compared to great groups of the U.S. Taxonomy.
Pollen analysis was made on peat deposits in the area of Pyung Taek County, Central Korea. Arboreal pollen(AP) of Alnus, Abies, Ligustrum, Viburnum and Carpinus composed 70-80% of the total pollen detected in this sample area. Judging from the large amount of arboreal pollens, one can assume that those species were dominant in this district when the pollen was deposited. Among the arboreal pollens, Alnus pollen occurred more often than any other trees. Pollens of Betula, Tilia and Ulmus occurred rarely in each layers of peat deposit. The pollen diagram showed that Pinus and Abies markedly increased from the bottom to the top of the peat, while Ligustrum, Quercus and Tilia decreased proportionately. Non-arboreal pollens (NAP) and spores composed about 30 percent at the lower layer, but decreased considerably in the upper layer.

The age of the Sorori old fluvial deposits is assumed as old as Last Interglacial(MIS 5) when appying the thalassostatic terrace formation in mid- to downstream Keum river basin, while the young fluvial deposits are interpreted to be formed since the post-LGM(last glacial maximum), including both the Bølling-Allerød (B/A) Interstadial(12,700~14,700 cal-yrBP), and the Younger Dryas Stadial(11,700~12,900 cal-yrBP). The wild rice seed like Oryza rufipogon found in the middle organic muds of the young fluvial deposits dated after about 15,000 cal-yrsBP, when the transition from the subalpine conifer forest to the deciduous broad-leaved forest was conspicuously evidenced in the upper part of OC-2 palynofloral zone of the in Cheonju Sorori site, In particular the OC-2 palynofloral zone ranging towards the upper part of middle organic muds(peaty muds) is interpreted to be formed in the B/A Interstadial. It is regarded that Cheongju Sorori rice seeds are associated with warm palynological evidences and backswamp insects during the Lastest Glacial, showing appearance of relatively warm climate similar to the present.
