  • With the recent increase in BIM orders in civil engineering, project owners are supplied with BIM-based products. Due to the lack of related guidelines, however, and the vague regulations on the creation and level of drawings as well as on the products list, many owners receive BIM-based products along with the existing 2D products. This can lead to task overlapping by designers or contractors and can cause the owners to have more data to maintain. If the existing 2D-based electronic supply system is changed to a BIM ordering system to reduce such a burden, it is necessary to examine the 2D products that can be extracted from or substituted for the BIM model so as to minimize the overlapping products. Therefore, in this study, BIM modeling of road construction projects whose enforcement plan by the Ministry of Land and Transportation has been completed was conducted, and based on the study results, the possibility of extracting 2D drawings from a total of 3,767 drawing items was determined. The results showed that 2,549 drawing items (67%) could be extracted as 2D drawings from the BIM model, and in particular, drawing items related to general connection work, earthwork, and amenities work could be most effectively substituted. The results of this study can be used as the base data for reducing the number of 2D drawings or substituting them in developing a BIM-based product supply system in the future.

  • Allowing on-site workers to access information of the construction process can enable task control, data integration, material and resource control. However, in the current practice of the construction industry, the existing methods and scope is quite limited, leading to inefficient management during the construction process. In this research, by adopting cutting edge technologies such as Augmented Reality(AR), digital twins, deep learning and computer vision with wearable AR devices, the authors proposed an AR visualization framework made of virtual components to help on-site workers to obtain information of the construction process with ease of use. Also, this paper investigates wearable AR devices and object detection algorithms, which are critical factors in the proposed framework, to test their suitability.

  • The simulation function by the 4D system is a representative BIM function in the construction stage. For the 4D simulation, schedule information for each activity must be created and then linked with the 3D model. Since the 3D model created in the design stage does not consider schedule information, there are practical difficulties in the process of creating schedule information for application to the construction stage and linking the 3D model. In this study, after extracting the schedule information of the construction stage using the HDBSCAN algorithm from the 3D model in the design stage, authors propose a methodology for automatically generating schedule information by identifying precedence and sequencing relationships by applying the topological alignment algorithm. Since the generated schedule information is created based on the 3D model, it can be used as information that is automatically linked by the common parameters between the schedule and the 3D model in the 4D system, and the practical utility of the 4D system can be increased. The proposed methodology was applied to the four bridge projects to confirm the schedule information generation, and applied to the 4D system to confirm the simplification of the link process between schedule and 3D model.

  • Recently, with the widespread adoption of Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology in the construction industry, various object detection algorithms have been used to verify errors between 3D models and actual construction elements. Since the characteristics of objects vary depending on the type of construction facility, such as buildings, bridges, and tunnels, appropriate methods for object detection technology need to be employed. Additionally, for object detection, initial object images are required, and to obtain these, various methods, such as drones and smartphones, can be used for image acquisition. The study uses a 360° camera optimized for internal tunnel imaging to capture initial images of the tunnel structures of railway and road facilities. Various object detection methodologies including the YOLO, SSD, and R-CNN algorithms are applied to detect actual objects from the captured images. And the Faster R-CNN algorithm had a higher recognition rate and mAP value than the SSD and YOLO v5 algorithms, and the difference between the minimum and maximum values of the recognition rates was small, showing equal detection ability. Considering the increasing adoption of BIM in current railway and road construction projects, this research highlights the potential utilization of 360° cameras and object detection methodologies for tunnel facility sections, aiming to expand their application in maintenance.

  • In architecture projects, BIM library has widely been using for prefabrication of products and design process. However, since the shape of structures is different by each project in civil engineering projects and a shape representation system is complicated, it is not easy to develop a standardized BIM library. To solve these issues, this study develops BIM library based on standardized 2D shop drawings for civil structures. The standardized shop drawings, which are the targets of the BIM library model, should be first selected. Besides, in order to define modeling scope with the level of general and shop drawings for each structure, LOD(Level of Detail) and breakdown structure are determined, and development methods of families of 3D object type including 2D profile and rebar through commercial software are established. With these, properties of BIM library are configured, and a utilization model of the BIM libraries is constructed for 3D modeling and a simulation using the BIM library. Therefore, this study can identify properties that are necessary when IFC schema is configured for civil engineering projects. For future, it is expected that easiness of BIM design for the civil engineering projects and generation, management, and analysis system of BIM library for road projects will be secured.

  • Most current BIM systems are focused on the visual information of work status in the design and construction stages. In a passive BIM system, 3D CAD tool can visualize the interference elements of design drawings, however, it cannot suggest a solution to solve the interference status. And 4D CAD tool in the construction stage can simulate the appearance of each activity by construction schedule, however, it cannot suggest an optimized schedule plan considering specified schedule condition of the project. Recently, many organizations need BIM solutions that can improve the work status beyond the level of simple visual information from BIM system. Active BIM system can provide the solutions to the project manager. This study suggests active BIM functions for the solutions and attempts to develop a 4D CAD engine to validate the usability of the functions.

  • There exists no precedented case of quantity take-off, using parametric modeling, from BIM-based irregular structures. Civil 3D provides earthwork quantity take-off based on surface modeling. Generally, designers should enter data into the specification additionally after extracting quantity estimation from earthwork modeling design. The objective of this report is to suggest the method from quantity take-off to specification of BIM-based earthwork quantities. We intend to investigate earthwork take-off method by Civil3D and explain why parametric information extraction is required for quantity estimation and specification and how information of earthwork quantity based on solid and surface modeling is connected to open quantity take-off module. It is highly expected that this suggestion would be the practical methodology of earthwork quantity take-off and specification in the field of civil engineering.

  • The purpose of the present study is to suggest the development direction for the neutral library which can describe the parametric modeling and design algorithm to design the construction spatial information which is known as BIM. To do this, we surveyed the recent research related to neutral library and analyzed the library technology of BIM modeler such as Revit, Archicad. By using this result, we suggested the development direction based on BIM description script language for the neutral BIM library including the parametric design and the algorithm definition.
