The Analysis of the Educational Objectives, Scientific Models and Cognitive Processes in Scientific Inquiry of the SNU Scientifically Gifted Student Program (서울대학교 과학 영재 프로그램의 학습 목표, 과학적 모형, 과학탐구의 인지 과정 분석)

  • We have analyzed the science-gifted educational program (year 2002) at the Seoul National University in terms of its educational objectives, scientific models, and cognitive processes in scientific inquiry in order to provide insights into developing and improving science-gifted educational program. We assumed the following items as important factors for teaching scientifically gifted students: higher-order thinking skills involving synthesis domain in the educational objectives, highly abstract nature and complexity in the scientific models, cognitive processes of planning experiments in the cognitive processes in scientific inquiry. According to the analyzed results, the program has the following characteristics: (1) the rates of both higher and lower-order thinking skill domain in the educational objectives are similarly high, but the rate of synthesis domain is relatively low; (2) in the case of the scientific models, the rate of the multiple concepts and/or processes model is relatively low, while the level of the abstractness is relatively on average (3) cognitive processes of authentic scientific inquiry is not thoroughly reflected in the scientific inquiry activities, and very few cognitive processes of planning experiments factor is reflected. Therefore, we conclude in the synthesis domain in the educational objectives, multiple concepts and/or processes model, and cognitive processes of planning experiments should be especially reflected more on the science-gifted educational program in order to serve the needs of scientifically gifted students.

A Study on the Weight of Assessment Domains in Science Education Focused on the Teacher's View Points (과학과 평가 영역간의 중요도에 관한 교사들의 인식에 관한 연구)

  • The 7th national curriculum is focused on breeding an independent and creative Korean who will lead the age of globalism and information in the 21st century. It is necessary to improve the existing assessment methods in order to develop higher thinking abilities such as creativity and problem-solving skill. Although teachers have been aware of this necessity, they have realized that it is difficult to improve the current assessment methods. In this study, we selected some assessment domains on science learning with literature reviews and case analysis. In addition, we calculated the degree of its importance by the use of Analytic Hierarchy Process(AHP). We suggest a direction for improving the present assessment domains on science learning on the basis of the research. Inquiry, cognitive, creative, and affective domain among assessment domains seemed to be listed in order of importance. Moreover, problem-identifying, hypothesizing, and inquiry-planning appeared to be the highest in the degree of importance among sub categories. Considering the results of this study, the current school assessment system which is focused on cognitive domain should be improved.

  • 오늘날과 같은 지식 정보화 사회는 지식과 정보를 기초로 한 사회활동이 주를 이루고 있다. 그래서 교육현장에서도 학습자는 컴퓨터를 이용하여 정보를 수집하고 처리하는 정보의 주체로 인식되어지고 있다. 특히 수학 교과 내용 중 도형 영역은 컴퓨터를 이용하여 다양한 시각적 경험과 탐구 기회를 제공하는 것이 매우 중요하다. 이를 실현하기 위한 방법으로써 여러 가지 방법이 있지만, 본 논문에서는 Sketchup이라는 상용 소프트웨어를 활용하여 도형 영역에 적용시켜 활용하는 방안에 대해 연구하였다. 학생들이 수학을 재미있고 쉽게 생각할 수 있는 방안을 내세우기란 쉽지 않지만, 이 연구의 결과로부터 수학과목의 도형영역에 대한 수학적 사고력과 성취도를 높이고 Sketchup과 같은 탐구형 소프트웨어의 효과적 활용 방안을 마련하고, 이를 통해 수학에 대한 긍정적인 인식을 마련할 수 있는 기틀이 되고자 한다.

Analysis of Inquisitive Tendency of 2009 Revised Middle School Informatics Textbooks (2009 개정 중학교 정보 교과서의 탐구적 경향 분석)

  • In this paper, we study the inquisitive tendency in informatics textbooks for middle school students. These textbooks were written in 2009, and have been adopted in 2013 as part of the curriculum. The research is based on six textbooks, which passed qualification tests, and is mainly focused on the section 'composition and movement of information equipment', which covers contents for the student's major field of study. Romey analysis was employed to analyze inquisitive tendency in four sections - text, data, activity and evaluation. The results illustrated that some textbooks were organized in a way that exhibited a low level of inquisitive tendency for students, and took an authoritative tone. The section 'activity' showed the highest level of inquisitive tendency and the 'text' showed the lowest level. Some sections in the textbooks were found to have zero Romey measures, which stress the need for improvement.

Analysis of Opinions Suggested by High School Students in the Critical Opinion Activity on Inquiry (탐구에 대한 비판적 의견 제시 활동에서 고등학생이 제시한 의견 분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze high school students' critical opinions on others' inquiries in small group open inquiry. Forty-one high school students participated in these activities at the inquiry planning stage and the intermediate stage of inquiry. In the two activities, 595 and 233 opinions were presented respectively, and analyzed into categories based on the inquiry process. The main research results are as follows: first, many opinions were presented in the areas of 'problem recognition and hypothesis setting' and 'design of inquiry' in the feedback on the inquiry plan, especially related to 'revision and addition of research problems,' 'research targets and conditions,' and 'control of variables.' Second, in the feedback on the results of the inquiry, there were many opinions related to 'report preparation' and 'design of inquiry' area. Based on the research results, implications related to the application of critical opinion activity were discussed.

Ninth Graders' Self-Assessment of Scientific Process Skills in Open Investigation (중학교 3학년 학생들의 개방적 탐구에서 과학적 탐구과정기능에 대한 자기평가 수행분석)

  • Understanding the students' ability and tendency of self assessment is one of the important factors in helping their learning and in giving the appropriate feedbacks. The purposes of this study is to analyse the coincidency of the students' self-assessment with the teacher assessment, and the tendency of over and under estimation. The students performed open investigations and assessed their process skills by checking their investigation reports with a given checklist. The total mean of the 'Self-Assessment Capability(SAC)' was 0.73 by 1. The SAC was related to the achievement, not to the gender. The correlation between SAC and achievement was significantly positive(r=0.7, p<.01), and for the girls, the tendency was remarkable. Among the five areas of process skills of open investigation, students got the highest SAC score in the managing and interpreting data area, and the lowest SAC in the drawing conclusion area. The mean of 'Self-Assessment Tendency(SAT)' for all items showed that students overestimated their process skills. While the high achievement students underestimated their process skills, the middle and low showed the tendency of overestimation.

The Analysis of Inquisitive Tendency of 'Problem-Solving Method and Process' Section in High School Informatics Textbooks (고등학교 '정보' 교과서에서 '문제 해결 방법과 절차' 영역의 탐구적 경향 분석)

  • In this paper, inquisitive tendency was analyzed within the 'problem solving method and process' section in high school informatics textbooks, which were adopted starting from 2011. Romey analysis was applied to each four section - text, data, activity, evaluation - in six textbooks. The results showed that the textbooks displayed a low level of inquisitive tendency since they were written without much of participation from students. Out of the sections that were analyzed, the section 'activity' showed the highest degree of inquisitive tendency. Also, based on the obtained results, we proposed ways to improve high school informatics textbooks.

  • 정보교육과정은 정보과학적 사고(Computational Thinking)의 향상을 목표로 하고 있다. 정보과학적 사고는 실생활의 다양한 문제를 컴퓨팅 파워를 이용하여 처리할 수 있는 형태로 추상화(Abstraction)하는 영역과 문제를 해결하기 위한 단계를 정의하는 자동화(Automation)하는 영역으로 구분할 수 있다. 정보 교육에서 추상화는 문제를 해결하기 위해서 데이터의 속성을 정의하고 구조화하거나 데이터들의 추상적인 관계와 의미를 분석하는 것으로 정보탐구 중심의 정보교육이라 할 수 있고, 자동화는 문제를 해결하는 절차 혹은 단계를 정의하고 이를 컴퓨팅 파워를 이용하여 자동적으로 처리할 수 있도록 하는 것으로 정보처리 중심의 정보교육이라고 할 수 있다. 본 연구는 정보교육의 두 가지 핵심영역에 따라 학습자가 인식하는 정보교육이 어떻게 다른지를 분석하고자 하는 목적으로 학습자의 정보교육에 대한 흥미, 가치, 자신감과 더불어 정보탐구와 정보처리 중심의 정보교육에 대한 인식의 차이를 분석하였다.

An Inquiry Activity in the Subject Matter of Earth Science: Apparent Rotation of Lunar Configuration (지구과학 교과 영역 탐구 활동 소재로서의 월면 회전)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between lunar and earth rotation, by quantitatively describing the rotation of lunar configuration which is observed during the lunar diurnal motion. Our research suggests that observation of the lunar diurnal motion could be used as a study topic in the earth science courses. The rotation of the lunar configuration is an apparent phenomenon that can be seen when an observer. standing on the ground. looks at the moon as if the lunar dark configuration rotates on the basis of horizontal line. In spite its competence as a study topic because it is observable by naked eyes, there are only few major textbooks that introduce this phenomenon with regard to the earth rotation. Therefore, this study induced the mathematical principle of the lunar rotation in detail and proposed that this could be developed as a scientific inquiry through practical observation. In addition, an analytical proof and qualitative method of explanation of the lunar reverse rotation were also presented.
