  • The effect of wave and current interactions on irregular wave transformation over a submerged elliptic shoal is investigated based on numerical simulations of the Vincent and Briggs experiment [Vincent, C.L., Briggs, M.J., 1989. Refraction-diffraction of irregular waves over a mound. Journal of Waterway, Port, Coastal and Ocean Engineering, 115(2), pp. 269-284]. The numerical simulations are conducted by a combination of REF/DIF S(a wave model) and SHORECIRC(a current model) and a time dependent phase-resolving wavecurrent model, FUNWAVE. In the simulations, the breaking-induced currents defocus waves behind the shoal and bring on a wave shadow zone that shows relatively low wave height distributions. The computed results of the combined model system agree better with the measurements than the computed results obtained by neglecting wave-current interaction do. In addition, the results of FUNWAVE show a good agreement with the measurements. The agreement indicates that it is necessary to take into account the effect of breaking-induced current on wave refraction when wave-breaking occurs over a submerged shoal.

  • This study has analyzed the backwater effect by the bridge pier on the basis of the result on hydraulic characteristics with pier shapes in study(I), using a two-dimensional model(RMA-2) and an one-dimensional model(HEC-RAS). The pier shapes are classified into total six types such as square, rhombus, octagon, oval, round, and no-piers. The result of the backwater effect analysis showed that the backwater length is about 150 and 50m from HEC-RAS and RMA-2, respectively for all pier types. Although it is difficult to directly compare between results from the two models, the oval shape pier has shown similar results to the no-pier situation before the bridge construction in hydraulic characteristics. This analysis can help to select pier types in the new bridge construction for the future.

  • Program and erase characteristics of the elliptic gate all around (e-GAA) SONOS cell have been studied as the variation of eccentricity of the channel. An analytic program and erase model for the elliptic GAA SONOS cell is proposed and evaluated. The model shows that the ISPP (incremental-step-pulse programming) property is changed non-linearly as the eccentricity of the e-GAA SONOS cell is increased. It is differently from the well known linear relationship for that of 2D SONOS and even 3D circular SONOS cell with program bias. We can find that the simulation results of ISPP characteristics are in accord with the experimental data.

  • The proposed directional pencil beam antenna consists of a waveguide feeder with bended elliptical conductor plate feed and a parabolic curved reflector. Two rectangular apertures located at the broad wall near the end of the feed waveguide inserted from behind the reflector are located at the focus of the reflector and emit electromagnetic energy with bended elliptical conductor plate. This plate is designed to reflect electromagnetic energy primarily and to face the main reflector. The two rectangular apertures located at the waveguide end have inwardly protruding tabs for impedance matching of the antenna system, the shape of the tabs is a truncated oval. The proposed parabolic reflector antenna has a diameter of 400 mm and a focal length of 134.23 mm. The antenna gain is 33.68 dBi at the center frequency of 16.5 GHz, the beam width is $3.3^{\circ}$ and the reflection loss is -15 dB. Using the HFSS-IE, simulation results are performed to validate the proposed antennas.

  • Space frame structures are included in the large spatial structures and can adopt various structure types. But, it is not easy to choose the optimal member size and shape because it depends on the structural engineer's experience and the repeated trial and error. Therefore, in this study, the final goal is to help the designer with the selection of the optimum shape. First, various space frame structures with ellipse dome and vault complex types are chosen and the shape generation method is considered to generate the nodes, coordinates and members. In optimal design process of space frame structure, each node coordinate changes according to height variation or the number of rings. Therefore, the auto generation technique of nodes and members is required in order to consider this phenomenon in optimal design process. Next, the shape generation module is created, base on the shape generation method. This module is connected with the analysis module and the optimization algorithm. Finally, the example model is presented for the evaluation of the efficiency of optimization algorithms.

  • The ultrastructures of the pigment cells in the Asiatic land salamander (Hynobius leechi) dorsal skin were obtained by means of electron microscope. The results were as follows; 1. The pigment cells of the epidermis consisted of the melanocytes in the germinal layer and of the melanophores distributing to the keratinocyte layer. The traits of these cells in the epidermis were as follows: A. The nuclei of the melanocytes were round or oval in shape and appeared as partly small or large infoldings of the nuclear envelope. B. Rough-surfaced endoplasmic reticulums and Golgi complexes were well developed in infranuclear cytoplasm. Many ribosomes were mainly distributed around the perinuclear portion. C. The melanosomes of the melanocytes were observed as a found or an oval shape and strong electron-dense or less electron-dense melanosomes were observed. D. The infoldings of the nuclear envelope in the melanophore were partly found deeper than those of the melanocyte. The cytoplasm of the melanophore filled with melanosomes caused organelles not to be observed in that. 2. The pigment cells in the dermis were composed of the xanthophores just beneath basement membrane and the melanophores in the connective tissue. The traits of these cells in the dermis were as follows: A. The xanthophores contained round or oval vesicles, and these vesicles were divided into 6 types (type I pterinosome, type II pterinosome, type III pterinosomes, type iv pterinosome, type V pterinosome, type VI pterinosome). B. Most of the nuclei of the melanophores in the dermis were elongate in shape, and a portion of the nuclear envelope was deep infolded. C. Becuase the cytoplasm was filled with the melanosomes of the same electron-density, organelles were not observed in the cytoplasm. D. Two processes of the melanophore in the dermis extended in parallel with a xanthophore and the cytoplasm in those processes were filled with the melanosomes.

  • Multi-stage deep drawing is a widely used industrial manufacturing process, and its applications are gradually expanding to both small products and large metallic products. The USB C-type socket used in smart phones, for example, is manufactured using oval multi-stage deep drawing. The socket is very small and slender and it requires precise manufacturing. The thickness distribution of the final product is guaranteed only if it is uniform throughout the overall process. Therefore, minimizing the height difference between long and short sidewalls after the first operation is important for this goal. An initial blank optimization was performed for an oval-type drawing process based on finite element simulations. The goal was to determine an initial blank geometry that can maintain uniform height and thickness after the first draw operation. The initial blank shape of the sheet metal was optimized, and the results show that it satisfied the conditions of minimal thickness reduction and even thickness distribution. The geometry from the optimized simulation was compared with experimental results, which showed good agreement.
