  • This study aimed to provide basic data for establishing the clinical basis for dental hygienist-led dental hygiene process of care by identifying multiple risk factors for self-support program participants in Gangneung city; we also compared oral health status and behavioral changes through customized oral health care. Four dental hygienists who were evaluated for degree of conformity provided dental hygiene process of care to eight self-support program participants who were selected as having an oral health risk among people in the self-support center. The clinical indicators measured during dental hygiene assessment and evaluation and behavioral changes due to dental hygiene intervention were compared and analyzed. With respect to clinical indicators, at the time of probe, the retention rate of patients with gingival bleeding decreased from 61.4% to 14.7% after intervention (p=0.004). Furthermore, the retention rate of patients with a periodontal pocket >4 mm decreased from 15.6% to 5.8% (p=0.001). The average modified O'Leary index of the patients improved from 23 to 40 (p=0.002). Previously, all eight subjects used the vertical or horizontal method of brushing; after dental hygiene care interventions regarding method and frequency of toothbrushing, use of oral care products, and individual interventions, they started using the rolling or Bass method of toothbrushing. Four of eight subjects reported using interdental toothbrushes after intervention. As a result of applying the change model to the transtheoretical behavior change of the subject, the result of strengthening the health behavior was confirmed. For promotion of oral health by the prevention-centered incremental oral health care system, dental hygienist-led dental hygiene management and maintenance is essential. It is thought that continuous research, such as for feasibility evaluation, cost benefit analysis, and preparation of legal systems, is needed to establish and activate dental hygiene management.

  • This study was conducted to investigate practice rate of dental hygiene assessment and to understand the performance ratio according to hospital type. A questionnaire survey was conducted on 195 dental hygienists, and the dental hygiene assessment items examined were 6 types of dental history, medical history, vital signs measurement, extraoral examination, intraoral soft tissue examination, andtissue examination. As a result of the study, the item with the highest percentage of performers was 92.8% of dental history, and the lowest item was extraoral examination 57.9%. And, dental clinics were higher than dental hospitals and university hospitals in all dental hygiene assessment categories, and in particular, performance rates of extraoral examination and intraoral soft tissue examination were higher in dental clinics. Considering the overall high rate of dental hygiene assessment through this study, it is necessary to discuss the legal work of dental hygienists and to reflect the insurance fee.

  • Background: This study evaluated the learning outcomes of dental hygiene students' ethical consciousness and ethical decision-making competence through dental ethics courses conducted in some universities. Methods: The subjects were 35 and 29 fourth-year dental hygiene students at G University in the first semester of 2021 and 2022, respectively, and 53 and 43 third-year dental hygiene students at D University, respectively, for a total of 160 students. After implementing the dental hygiene ethics course, classroom performance was evaluated in terms of moral sensitivity, confidence in making ethical decisions, classroom practicality, learning outcomes, and class satisfaction. Statistical analysis was conducted using independent t-test and paired t-test, and the statistical significance level was 0.05. Results: Both universities reported an increase in moral sensitivity and confidence in ethical decision-making after the course (p<0.001). Classroom practicality and class satisfaction for the dental hygiene ethics course did not differ between disciplines and were rated positively with a score of 4 or higher (p>0.05). Learning outcomes were higher among 4-year students than 3-year students (p<0.001). Conclusions: It was evaluated that the ethics in dental hygiene curriculum can strengthen students' competence in ethical decision-making, including moral sensitivity and confidence in solving ethical problems in dental hygiene.

Weekday usage dummy 1 was the factor with the greatest impact, with an explanatory power of 25.6%. Additional studies on various factors that affect smartphone overdependence as well as education programs for preventing smartphone overdependence in dental hygiene students are needed.

  • In this study, the positive thinking, academic self-efficacy, and school adjustment of freshman dental hygiene students were identified. The correlation between each variable was identified and the influencing factors were investigated. Data collection was conducted from October 1 to October 21, 2019 on 213 freshman dental hygiene students in Gyeonggi-do, Chungcheong-do, Jeolla-do, and Gyeongsang-do regions. According to the study, the significant influence of freshman dental hygiene students' school adjustment was in the order of academic self-efficacy, positive thinking, and career program experience, and the most influential factors were academic self-efficacy, and the regression model explained was 47.7%. Since this study has been investigated and conducted on some freshman dental hygiene students, there is a limit to generalizing the results, subsequent studies will require continuous study of various variables for positive thinking and academic self-efficiency to school adjustment. However, based on this study, it is meaningful that it can be used as data to supplement the prior study related to school adjustment, and by presenting factors related to the school adjustment of freshman dental hygiene students, it is thought that it became basic data that confirmed the necessity of developing the school adjustment program.
