The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the burnout of dental hygienists on their job commitment. The subjects were 156 dental hygienists. Structured questionnaire surveys were conducted. Maslash Burnout Inventory scale and the tool developed by Kang was used. The burnout and job commitment was each divided into three factors; emotional depletion, accomplishment decrease and dehumanizing and organizational commitment, career commitment, and work commitment. The dental hygienists' burnout score was 3.77 points and commitment score was 3.53 points. Burnout was higher among those with clinical careers shorter than five years and smaller numbers of colleague. Those with higher burnout showed higher career involvement and those with longer careers and higher salaries showed higher organizational commitment. Dental hygienists' career that higher burnout was associated with lower degrees of job commitment. Therefore, efficient manpower management should be ways to maintain of their carrer and increase the salary.

Objective: To understand the experience of medical accidents and disputes according to clinical career of dental hygienists. Methods: A self-administrated questionnaire survey was conducted from May 2012 to June 2012 targeting 313 dental hygienists in Gyeongsangnam-do, Republic of Korea. Data were analyzed by descriptive analysis, χ2-test, and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). Collected data were analyzed using SPSS 18.0. Results: 1) The group who had more than 6 years of clinical experience experienced complaints from patients (70.3%) and dental hygienists duty (30.7%); 2) Complaints were related to diagnosis, dental treatment instruments and materials, scaling, impression preparation, and prosthodontics. Pediatric patients had significantly more complaints compared to other patients. Overall, there were more frequent cases in the group with over 6 years of clinical career; 3) For the psychological state after experiencing patients' complaints, 'the process is difficult, but I forget after thinking it could be happen' had 160 respondents. Among them, 38.1% had clinical experience of more than 6 years, 37.5% had less than 3 years, and 24.4% had clinical career of 3~6 years; 4) About 73.6% of those had 3~6 years of clinical career answered that 'sometimes it is doubtful' on the issue of medical accidents and conflicts on prevention education of dental hygienists that 'there is a doubt about the issue of medical treatment or the occurrence of disputes'. About 60.0% of those who had less than 3 years of clinical experience answered that it was highly 'necessary but not urgent' on the necessity of preventive education, while 87.1% of those who had more than 6 years of clinical career answered that it was highly 'necessary but not urgent' on the necessity of preventive education. The difference between the two was not statistically significant. Conclusions: It is necessary and urgent to provide education related to prevention and countermeasures against malpractice disputes for dental hygienists.
The purpose of this study was to survey clinical dental hygienists for their perceived ethical dilemma and professionalism. The subjects in this study were 393 dental hygienists who randomly selected worked in dental clinics. After a survey was conducted, the collected data were analyzed with a SPSSWIN 18.0 program. The findings of the study were as follows: Dental hygienists perceived ethical dilemma scored 2.46 on a 5-point scale on average. In view of its sub-areas, the sub-areas which scored highest was 'dental hygienist with the profession'(2.62), followed by 'dental hygienist with object'(2.41) and 'dental hygienist with coworker'(2.34) in their order. Dental hygienists perceived professionalism scored 3.28 on a 5-point scale on average. In view of its sub-areas, the sub-areas which scored highest was 'sence of public service'(3.55), followed by 'autonomy'(3.42), 'reference professional group'(3.14) and 'sence of mission'(3.01) in their order. In regard to the relationship of the general characteristics to professionalism, those who were older, whose career was longer, whose education was highest and who were married were statistically significantly ahead of their counterparts in that aspect. In relation to factors affecting professionalism, longer career and higher education had a better impact on professionalism. Those factors made a 13% prediction of that.
This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between task performance, job satisfaction, and organizational contribution of dental hygienists, and to analyze the resulting impact on the organizational contribution of the dental hygienists. The study sample included 300 people working in a dental clinic during May 2016; data were collected through a self-questionnaire and an online questionnaire. Subsequently, 285 responses were analyzed. The results showed that a higher monthly income, business support services, and work satisfaction affect organizational contribution. The correlation of organizational contribution was the highest with business management in task performance and with work satisfaction in job satisfaction. In conclusion, a dental hygienist, who may have highest careers and is involved in the management of dental work, affects the organizational contribution of the dental clinic.
This study identified knowledge, attitudes and behavior for radiation safety managemen of career dental hygienists and new dental hygienists. Results obtained from this study are as follows. 1. Regarding the knowledge level of radiation safety management, average score was $8.25{\pm}2.47$ for career dental hygienists and $7.42{\pm}2.77$ for new dental hygienists from 15 scale test.(p<.001). In addition, knowledge level of radiation safety management by general characteristics showed statistically significant difference according to health status(p<0.01). 2. Regarding the attitude level of radiation safety management, average score was $4.35{\pm}0.55$ for career dental hygienists and $4.19{\pm}0.60$ for new dental hygienists from 5 scale test.(p<0.01). 3. Regarding the behavior level of radiation safety management, average score was $3.14{\pm}0.98$ for career dental hygienists and $3.33{\pm}0.99$ for new dental hygienists from 5 scale test.(p<0.05). In addition, the behavior level by general characteristics showed statistically significant difference according to attendance rate of radiation safety management training (p<0.01) and defences of clinic (p<.001). 4. Based on the survey of relationship among knowledge, attitude and behavior of radiation safety management, we found that the higher the knowledge level of radiation safety management was, the higher the level of attitude was(p<.001).
This study was aimed at exploring the meaning and essence of the conflict experiences of clinical dental hygienists. In-depth interviews with 13 dental hygienists working in a dental clinic were conducted. Giorgi's method was used for qualitative analysis of the data. Conflict experiences of clinical dental hygienists were categorized into four central meaning as task conflicts, interpersonal conflicts, organizational environment conflicts, and conflict management style. Participants felt more sensitive towards the attitudes of people than treatment itself. Further studies on the multifaceted approach to conflict experiences of dental hygienists should be made. Additional research is necessary to develop effective measures and program to prevent and reduce conflict and stress in the work environment of dental hygienists.
The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of critical thinking, clinical decision making and job satisfaction of 132 dental hygienists. The data was collected from 1st May to 31th October, 2012 in Ulsan, Pusan and Gyeongsangnam-do areas. The majority participants were female, 30.6 years old, graduate diploma course of dental hygienist, and working in dental clinics. In critical thinking, truth-seeking was highest score, 3.36 but maturity was lowest score, 3.00. In clinical decision making, canvassing of objectives & values was highest score 3.39, but search for alternatives or options was lowest score, 3.10. In job satisfaction, professional status was highest score 3.20, but incomes & promotion was lowest score 2.84. In correlation between general characteristics and critical thinking, there was significantly different in religion, education status, total working period and working areas. There was significantly different with religion and education status in clinical decision making, And There was significantly different with religion and education status, total working period, and working areas in job satisfaction. Critical thinking, clinical decision making and job satisfaction was positive relationship. To improve professional competence and job satisfaction of dental hygienist it need to use actively the critical thinking and clinical decision making. And it need to prepare the education and strategy to increase the job satisfaction of dental hygienist.
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship among burnout, compassion fatigue, compassion satisfaction and social support of clinical dental hygienists. The subjects in the study were 313 dental hygienist who were randomly selected in dental clinic and hospital, which were located in Daejeon, South and North Chungcheong province. Data were gathered using structured questionnaires from June 17 to July 31, 2013. The major findings of the study were as follows: 1. As for burnout by general characteristics, there were statistically significant difference according to age, marital status, clinical career, agency work type and job position. 2. The relationship of burnout and other variables was analyzed, and compassion fatigue had a significant positive effect on burnout, and compassion satisfaction and social support had negative effects on burnout. 3. As a result of analyzing which variables affected burnout, it's found that burnout were under the influence of agency work type, compassion fatigue, compassion satisfaction and social support. These variables made a 56.9% prediction of burnout. These findings provide strong empirical evidence for the importance of compassion fatigue, compassion satisfaction and social support in explaining burnout of clinical dental hygienists. Therefore, the effective human resource management programs should be developed to consideration with the dental hygienist work environment and the quality of service.
This study conducted a survey of 265 dental hygienists working in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province from January 10 to February 28, 2021 to understand the ethical values and professional occupational characteristics of clinical dental hygienists. The difference in ethical values and professional occupational perception between subjects was post-tested using SPSS WIN 20.0 program and Scheffe test using independent sample T-test and one-way ANOVA. According to the results of the study, ethical thinking in ethical values was statistically significant in dental hospitals with higher final education, more work experience, and ethical work experience (p<0.05). The higher the age, the higher the final education, the more ethical education experience at university, the higher the sense of mission, the fewer working days, the more satisfying the job, the higher the organizational compliance with professional organizations and public service (p<0.05). The results of this study confirm the necessity of regular ethics education such as continuing education for dental hygienists, and are expected to be used as basic data to maintain ethical values and professionalism in clinical practice.
The purpose of this study was to examine the work and turnover of dental hygienists in a bid to find out problems with them and feasible reform measures. The subjects in this study were 383 dental hygienists, on whom a self-administered survey was conducted in May and June, 2010. Concerning the work of the dental hygienists by the type of dental institution, the largest group placed importance on treatment cooperation as the major duty. Both of the dental clinic(54.3%) and the dental hospital employees(30.0%) faced the most difficulties in providing treatment counseling. As to the work awareness of the dental hygienists by career, the greatest group gave weight to treatment cooperation as the major duty, and the gaps in that aspect were statistically significant (p<.05). In dental clinics, working conditions (27.2%) and in dental hospitals, salary increase (37.1%) should be given top priority for improvement. The most common reasons for which dental hygienists changed theirs jobs were significantly different between dental clinics and dental hospitals: discord with supervisors (39.3%) in dental clinics and dissatisfaction with the salary (28.6%) in dental hospitals. The difference between the two results were statistically significant (p<.05). These findings indicate that independent working and improvement in working conditions of dental hygienists are urgently needed.
