  • For ethical and economic reasons, clinicla trials must be repeatedly monitored for evidence of treatment benefit or harm. Repeated testing at conventional critical values can substantially inflate the overal type I error rate. To maintain acceptable levels, group sequential procedures have been developed for clinical trials. This article gives a brief overview of the group sequential procedures.

  • This research is focused on the inducement of the constitutive equation considering the creep strain component and on the development of a finite element method program. The purpose of this research was to contribute to the design of construction structures or to the construction management in soft clay ground through predicting the long-term strain of construction structures reasonably bused on the above program. Modified Cam Clay model was adopted to describe the elastic-plastic behavior of clayey soil. And in the calculation of the creep sprain, the secondary coefficient of consolidation C. was applied for considering the volumetric creep element and the constants m, $\alpha$, A were rosed by the empirical creep equation proposed by Singh 8E Mitchell for considering the deviatoric creep element. To examine the reliability of the program which is developed in this study, the estimated values by this program were compared with the theoretical solution and the experimental results. And the applicability of the developed program was found to be reliable from the sensitive analysis of each parameters used in this study. According to the results obtained from the application of the program on the field measurement data, the estimated values by the program were found with be consistent with the actual values. And from the analysis of the displacement of embankments, the case of considering the creep behavior induced much fower errors than the case of neglecting it. But the results obtained from considering the volumetric creep behavior only were slightly underestimated the results from considering the deviator creep behavior showed the slightly overestimated values. Therefore, it remains the task of further studios to develop the laboratory test devices to obtain the reliable creep parameters, and to select the appropriate soil parameters, etc.

  • This paper dealt with the influence of experimental error generated inevitably during performing experiments on the granular soil behaviour analysis selecting Lade's Single Work-Hardening constitutive model. Several isotropic compression-expansion tests and a series of drained conventional triaxial tests with various confining pressures for Baekma river sands were performed and the values of parameters for the above model were determined using computer program developed for this study based on regression analysis. By finding the range of the upper and lower bound for deviator stress and volumetric strain versus axial strain dependant on the increase and decrease of the standard deviation from mean value of parameters, sensitivities of all the parameters were examined. Practical use of program to determine the parameters and capability to predict the behaviour of granular soil by Lade's Single Work -Hardening model verified.

  • In this study, the optimal method is applied to strengthening of RC hollow slab bridges using external prestressing. The Queen-post and King-post shapes are considered to find the effective tendon configurations. In order to achieve the objective rating factor, the optimal configurations and tendon forces are obtained by using the Sequential Unconstrained Minimization Technique (SUMT). The object function for optimal strengthening is constituted with the dimensionless function of material costs. The constraints are formulated by design specification and the rating factor. The validity of this study is presented by the analysis of the results of strengthening of the RC hollow slab bridges.

  • The number of railway tunnel design is increasing recently compare to a great number of highway tunnel design which had increased with a lot of highway construction in the 70's and 80's. Therefore, there is more or less difference of time between highway tunnel and railway tunnel. In this paper, numerical analysis on two kinds of tunnels, such as two-forked road highway ventilation tunnel and double track railway tunnel with 4.3m of center line, in cases of with support materials condition and without support materials condition were conducted. Finally, stability of two kinds of tunnels were compared and analyzed through comparing of principal stresses and deviator stresses in the near base rock of tunnels using results of numerical analysis.

  • In a typical trend-cycle decomposition of GDP, the trend component is usually assumed to follow a random walk process. This paper considers an ARIMA trend and assesses the validity of the ARIMA trend model. I construct univariate and bivariate unobserved-components(UC) models, allowing the ARIMA trend. Estimation results using U.S. data are favorable to the ARIMA trend models. I, also, compare the forecasting performance of the UC models. Dynamic pseudo-out-of-sample forecasting exercises are implemented with recursive estimations. I find that the bivariate model outperforms the univariate model, the smoothed estimates of trend and cycle components deliver smaller forecasting errors compared to the filtered estimates, and, most importantly, allowing for the ARIMA trend can lead to statistically significant gains in forecast accuracy, providing support for the ARIMA trend model. It is worthy of notice that trend shocks play the main source of the output fluctuation if the ARIMA trend is allowed in the UC model.

  • In this paper, we propose a new class of segmentation technique for feature extraction based on the statistical and regional classification at each vertical or horizontal line of digital image data. Data is processed and clustered at each line, different from the point or space process. They are designed to segment gray-scale sectional images using a horizontal and vertical line process due to their statistical and property differences, and to extract the feature. The techniques presented here show efficient results in case of the gray level overlap and not having threshold image. Such images are also not easy to be segmented by the global or local threshold methods. Line pixels inform us the sectionable data, and can be set according to cluster quality due to the differences of histogram and statistical data. The total segmentation on line clusters can be obtained by adaptive extension onto the horizontal axis. Each processed region has its own pixel value, resulting in feature extraction. The advantage and effectiveness of the line-cluster approach are both shown theoretically and demonstrated through the region-segmental carotid artery medical image processing.

  • In this paper, characteristics of shear strength and deformation of geosynthetics-reinforced slag materials are described. In order to investigate the effect of geosynthetics on shear strength and deformation behavior of slags, when they are reinforced with geosynthetics or geomat such as PET mat, large triaxial tests were performed under consolidated-drained condition. The materials used in the study are real ones as they are in the field, so that the scale effect of samples disappeared. From the large triaxial tests, it was observed that the stress-strain relationship of geosynthetics-reinforced slags shows relatively small dilatancy and weak tendency of strain hardening, compared with that of slags without reinforcement. The shear strength parameters such as apparent cohesion and internal friction angle increase with PET mat reinforcement, consequently result in about 1.2 (for low confining pressure) to 1.4 (for high confining pressure) times of shear strength of un-reinforced sample. Therefore, the adoption of geomat-reinforced slag layers leads to an increase in the factor of safety for embankment design on soft soil formations.

  • In this study relative density tests of bottom ash and standard sand were carried out. And cyclic triaxial tests for samples with the relative density of 40%, 55%, and 70% were carried out on the basis of the test results. Cyclic triaxial tests were also conducted for fines content with 55% relative density. Residual samples were divided into No.40, No.60, No.60, and No.100, and No.200. In order to avoid crashing that can happen when compaction of the sample is initiated, bottom ash was crushed using the a compact mold. In consideration of the crushing characteristics of each residual samples, the fragmentation rate increased up to 30%, which led to the adjustment of fine-grained amount to 10%, 20%, and 30%. Through the repative triaxial test in accordance with the relative density, resistant characteristics of the liquefaction of bottom ash was analyzed. Test results show that, crushing strength of bottom ash was smaller than that of standard sand, resulting in different liquefaction behavior characteristics. And we could find fines content with maximum resistant characteristics of the liquefaction.
