  • For liquid rocket engine test, one of most important design parameters to be measured is thrust. However, not like solid rocket motor, a liquid rocket engine is attached to the propellant feed system, control valve and many other safety systems. Without considering these effects, thrust data measured from firing test is not reliable and sometimes almost meaningless. In this research, new thrust measurement system, which includes all these side effects, was designed and fabricated.

  • A new method for measuring the performance of a micro-thruster is suggested in this paper. A few thrust stands have been developed for measuring micro-level thrusts. This paper describes a different measurement method that can minimize the calibration involved in the measurements, while providing the capability of directly measuring the produced minimum impulse bit directly. The underlying theory and the theoretical background for the measurement mechanism are described here. The theory and method is verified using a computer simulation, and the result is given in this paper. The theory has also been tested on an actual hardware. Although this hardware is a prototype, developed for proof-of-concept analysis, satisfactory results have been obtained.

  • Accurate thrust measurement is very important when developing an engine of propulsion system. Especially for a low thrust liquid rocket engine(LRE), accuracy of thrust is seriously affected by thrust measurement errors and thurst losses which are caused by propellant supply system. In this study, a new thrust measurement system is developed for accurate thrust measurement of a low thurst LRE by minimizing these effects. Its thrust measurement range is 150~1500N and the maximum error is below 10N. Also, a reliability appraisal technique is investigated to improve reliability and accuracy of the thrust measurement system.

  • Thrust is one of the crucial performance parameter of a combustion chamber in the combustion chamber development test. So it is very important to measure an accurate thrust. Thrust calibration test was performed to identify the system characteristics, resistance and linearity of a vertical thrust measurement system(TMS) for accurate thrust measurement. It has been found 6.9% ~ 8.6% errors between the measured thrust by TMS calibration equations and theoretical thrust. It has been confirmed that the TMS calibration is necessary to be performed with the propellant lines connected to the combustion chamber for accurate thrust measurement.

  • It is very difficult to measure an exact thrust in liquid rocket engine compared to solid rocket motor, however it is very important to estimate a performance of engine for developing rockets. To get a good result, we have to concern about errors of measurement and find a method of calibration. In this research, we developed new thrust measurement system for liquid rocket engine.

  • This study deals an estimation method of thrust measurement uncertainty in solid rocket motors. Guidelines of the force measurement uncertainty estimation have been provided by ISO, domestic and international organizations. However, all of them are described by focusing on the force calibration machines and force transducers with a conceptually-driven way. Thus the guidelines cannot be directly applicable to uncertainty estimation of calibration equation and its linear approximation, which are critical error sources in the thrust measurement. In this paper, the equations taking into account effects of both error sources are derived based on fundamental concepts of measurement uncertainty. These are applied to the real thrust measurement system where a relatively simple estimation method for the thrust measurement uncertainty is proposed.

  • Thrust measuring is one of the crucial factor to decide the performance of a liquid rocket engine when the engine development test, especially for the combustion chamber, is implemented. Calculating the thrust from a combustion pressure is used when direct measuring the thrust is impossible, but direct measuring the thrust is necessary and various methods for doing it more precisely should be considered. This paper introduces the preliminary design concept about the new thrust measurement system for the vertical firing test stand, which is introduced domestically for the first time, of a liquid rocket engine combustion chamber.

  • 한국항공우주연구원 추진기관팀은 1999년 10월에 3,000 lbf 급 고공환경 엔진시험 설비를 갖추고 소형 가스터빈 엔진의 고공환경 성능시험에 이를 활용하고 있다. 하지만 새롭게 2008년부터 고공환경 성능시험을 진행하고 있는 엔진은 1,000 lbf 미만의 초소형 엔진으로써 기존 추력측정 시스템을 이용하여서는 정확한 추력의 측정을 보장할 수 없다. 본 논문에서는 초소형 엔진의 고공환경 성능시험 수행을 위한 추력대의 구축 과정을 다루고 있다.

  • In this study, an MEMS thrust measurement system was designed and a study on the performance prediction of system was performed to evaluate the performance of micro thruster. Thrust measurement system consists of beam, membrane, and piezoresistive sensor. An FEM analysis was carried out to verify the stability of the system, confirm the stress variation at the beam, and position the piezoresistive sensor. The stability of the designed system was verified by comparing the yield strength of the material with the maximum stress. The piezoresistive sensor was designed to be 20% of the length of the beam to obtain a high gauge factor. The size of the membrane and the beam of the reference model were designed to be $15mm{\times}15mm$, and $500{\mu}m{\times}500{\mu}m$, respectively.

  • Thrust force induced by the dielectric barrier discharge inside of cylinder pipes is measured for various conditions. The input peak-to-peak voltage and frequency are varied from 2 to 9 kVpp and from 5 to 15 kHz, respectively. The height of cylinder is varied from 50 to 100 mm. The results of the measurements show that the magnitude of the generated thrusts increases as the voltage and the frequencies increase. It also shows that the generated thrusts are decreased according to the increase in the height of the cylinder. The cause of the thrust decrease is discussed in terms of energy losses due to the frictions on the wall surface.
