  • This study analyzed and compared the characteristics in plan and practice of elementary school teachers' science-gifted classes and invention-gifted classes based on pedagogical content knowledge (PCK). To do this, we selected eight elementary school teachers with experience in conducting elementary science-gifted classes and/or invention-gifted classes were selected at the gifted education institutes in Seoul and conducted individual in-depth interviews. The analysis of the results reveal that the teachers tended to organize the science-gifted classes with a focus on the exploration of causes and application activities for scientific phenomena, but tended to organize the invention-gifted classes with a focus on producing creative output based on methodology. They were all emphasizing the enhancement of creativity in planning and practicing both science-gifted classes and invention-gifted classes. However, there were also some differences in the elements of creativity required by each class. They tended to select subjects for science-gifted classes based on regular science curriculum, while selecting subjects for invention-gifted classes focused on creative design rather than considering the practical art curriculum related to invention-gifted education. They tended to pursue and practice STEAM education in both science-gifted classes and invention-gifted classes. In a way that conforms to these class goals and points, they were using experiments and practices, providing feedback to students, and conducting evaluations. However, some shortcomings were also revealed in the processes. Educational implications of these findings are discussed.

  • The purpose of this study is to estimate the ability of inquiry performance for students gifted in science in elementary school. 56 sixth graders were included in this study. Initially, a question 'How does the dust effect on human health?' was posed to students. Then, an assessment framework for analysis of the inquiry report was developed. It is composed of 5 domains: data collection, prediction, the inquiry process, results, conclusion and presentation. The findings reveal that the students achieved high scores in the domain of 'data collection' and followed by prediction, inquiry process, results, conclusion and presentation. The results of our study are as follows : first, in spite of high scores obtained in basic inquiries such as data collection, students needed to improve their skills in prediction, the inquiry process, results, conclusion and presentation. Second, the reason why students were outstanding in data collection is that they have improved their ability to handle data in a know-ledge-based information society. Third, even though students were good at citing and applying some information, they didn't fully understand the meaning of data and exhibited weaknesses in arguing their own opinions.

  • There is more than one way to conduct scientific research. In addressing the concern for educating the gifted in science towards achieving objectives of fostering their research skill, its elements need be explored and discussed by first admitting that various methodologies and features coexist in the name of scientific research. This study explores the various features of research skill presented as scientific process skills focusing on the students' experimental designing. Of course, there are several other domains included facets of research skill, such as problem finding, scientific knowledge, and self-efficacy. A Diet Cola Test (DCT) (Fowler. 1990) for digging into science process skills as an elements of research skills was administered to 705 students from 3rd to 10th grade, who enrolled the gifted education centers in Korea. Date was interpreted and analyzed based on the focus of Science education perspectives and research methods related to creative thinking and problem-based learning. But I eschew establishing and generalizing fixed constitutes of research skill from this research.

  • Scientific explanation is composed of various representations such as texts, diagrams, and graphs, and each representation contributes to expanding scientific meaning by connecting similar but slightly different meanings as a 'mode'. Based on this perspective of social semiotics, we aimed to identify the characteristics of meaning formation demonstrated in students' science writing (verbal mode) and science drawing (visual mode) and to discuss the pedagogical use of multimodal representations. To that end, 18 science drawings and 18 scientific writings constructed by science-gifted elementary students on air pressure were collected. The characteristics of the drawn and written explanations were then analyzed from the affordance perspective in social semiotics. In science drawing, students showed a tendency to use the affordance of the visual mode to infer concrete changes from the particle view, such as the movement of air particles, the number of air particles, and the collision of particles. In science writing, students used the affordance of the verbal mode mainly to infer the causal relationship between the concept of air pressure and other related factors at an abstract level. Based on those results, we discuss the educational implications and provide concrete examples of how to use the unique affordances of each form to complement one another.
