  • In this study, the effect of the workbook-based unplugged activity program on the improvement of computational thinking skills of elementary school students in 3rd and 4th grade was statistically analyzed. The study was conducted with 18 students in the 3rd and 4th grades of G Elementary School located in Chungcheongnam-do, and after conducting a computational thinking ability test in advance, an unplugged program based on the workbook was conducted in a total of 6 sessions with 9 members of the experimental group. After that, a post-mortem examination was conducted to analyze the degree of improvement in computational thinking ability. As a result of the analysis, it was confirmed that the workbook-based unplugged program improved the computational thinking skills of elementary school students in 3rd and 4th grade and had a positive effect.

  • The goal of this research is to analyze the trend of Korean fourth grade students' achievement in TIMSS 2011 and TIMSS 2015 science content domains and to suggest implications for science curriculum and teaching & learning improvement. With four elementary science teachers and three science educators, we analyzed Korean fourth grade students' percentage of correct responses in TIMSS 2015 science content and cognitive domains, and conducted item-curriculum matching analysis for test items. According to the results, Korean students performed relatively better in test topics covered in the science curriculum for 3-4 grades regardless of the science content domain (i.e., Life science, Physical science, or Earth science). Korean students showed low percentage of correct answers for items related to such topics as heat conduction, the action of electricity, the motion of the earth and the moon, etc., which were covered in the 5th-6th grades in the 2009 revised curriculum. For science cognitive domains, Korean students' achievement dropped significantly in reasoning between TIMSS 2011 and TIMSS 2015. Discussed in the conclusion are implications to reconstruct elementary school science curriculum, and ways to improve science teaching and learning.

  • This study surveyed on a comparative study of the students' oral health knowledge and behavior between the elementary schools with(528) or without dental clinic(442) in Ulsan. Sang Jin had 11.6% students from single parent or parentless families, revealing a much higher percentage than that of Mun Hyeon 3.6%. The findings showed on oral health care the score of activities of students in Sang Jin about 'always brushing one's teeth after having snacks' 'having seen a dentist and gotten regular dental checkups' and 'having a lot of concern for one's oral health' was much higher than that of Mun Hyeon. Sang Jin earned statistically higher marks for having better oral health knowledge that 'Chocolate, cookies and candy easily cause decayed teeth', 'Fruit, milk and vegetables cleanse the teeth', 'Brushing teeth can be replaced with chewing gum after meals', and 'Brushing teeth in left & right is the best way to cleanse'. As the knowledge of oral health care differed depending on the graders 4th, 5th, 6th in Sang Jin, the higher their grade was in.

  • In this research, the TRIZ program was developed for the growth of creativity of elementary school students. As for the TRIZ program that was developed in this research, it reconfigured the 40 of principles of the TRIZ within current curriculum, so that it would be possible for all elementary school students to receive their education in school for the growth of creativity. In order to adopt the 4-stages-class model that was developed, I made sample kit for utilizing TRIZ, and developed lesson plans along with materials 13-worksheet for lower-grade students, as well as lesson plans along with materials 12-worksheet, for higher-grade students. This program was applied to 2nd grade students of Y elementary school and 6th grade students of J elementary school, and according to the DESK theory, I subdivided the creativity into fluency, flexibility, originality, and exquisiteness, and it was shown that all of fluency, flexibility, originality, and exquisiteness were developed in elementary students who participated in TRIZ program compared with non-participated students. In conclusion, it was possible to understand that TRIZ program was effective for the growth of creativity of elementary school students.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of STS (Science, Technology and Society) instruction on 5th graders learning motivation and scientific attitudes, using ARCS (Attention, Relevance, Confidence, Satisfaction) strategies. A total of 53 fifth grade students were sampled from an elementary school, and were assigned to the experimental and the control groups. For four weeks, the experimental group was treated with STS instruction using ARCS strategies while the control group was treated with traditional instruction. The result of this study showed that STS instruction using ARCS strategies was more effective in the development of students' learning motivation and scientific attitudes.

  • We must know computer terms to use, learn, and understand efficiently. It is important for the elementary school students who learn computer for the first time to understand computer terms correctly. This study investigates a computer terms in the elementary school computer textbook which have been used currently at the elementary school, selects suitable computer terms for the elementary school student, analyzes and classifies them as a 1 2th grade, a 3 4th grade, 5 6th grade by the elementary school computer curriculum, and also classifies those as information ethics, computer basic, application software, computer communication by the category. The expectations of this study are as follows. First, the result of this offers teacher to a computer terms guidance for usability which is essential to elementary school's computer class. Second, this can be used as a reference in making a elementary computer textbook or studying and training textbook for teachers. Third, this offers teachers to an important criteria when they select a computer textbook for elementary student in elementary school.

  • This research is a study on student's understanding fundamental conception of mathematical curriculum, especially in geometry domain. The goal of researching is to analyze student's wrong conception about that domain and get the mathematical teaching method. We developed various questions of descriptive assessment. Then we set up the term, procedure of research for the understanding student's knowledge of geometry. And we figured out the student's understanding extent through analysing questions of descriptive assessment in geometry. In this research, we concluded that most of students are having difficulty with defining the fundamental conception of mathematics, especially in geometry. Almost all the students defined the fundamental conceptions of mathematics obscurely and sometimes even missed indispensable properties. Prior to this study, we couldn't identify this problem. Here are some suggestions. First, take time to reflect on your previous mathematics method. And then compile some well-selected questions of descriptive assessment that tell us more about student's understanding in geometry.

  • This research was about analyzing students' major error types in the field of elementary 1st grade mathematics numbers and operations, and formulating and applying effective teaching methods to find out their effects. Among the errors the students were making, it was found that in the field of numbers there was more than 50% chance of making calculation mistakes in 50 rounds of rational counting. Also, in the field of operations, it was discovered that most of students' mistakes had to do with subtraction. The results from the classification of the 4 types of error showed that most errors were made from having inaccurate concept of knowledge and definition. Thus, it can be concluded that when elementary 1st grade teachers teach students mathematics, it is most important that they put best effort into firmly establishing the students fundamental concept, definition, facts, and functions. For that matter, students were interviewed one by one, and by implementing learning method using some concrete materials as tools, students were able to fix their own errors. More importantly, students were able to gain interest and become more willing to participate by joining in this program, which led to more effective guidance.

  • This study examines fourth graders engaged in three concrete activities involving sampling from finite populations. The first included a survey of popular foods for school meals. The second had them take samples from a box containing white and black marbles to predict how many white and black marbles were in the box. The final activity required them to predict how many times the Korean letter '가' would appear in a Korean story book. The results show that the participants can experience and notice different ideas related to samples and sampling in different activities. In the first activity, they acknowledged that samples are useful for obtaining the information about populations. A population survey is difficult and is not overly useful. In the second activity, they recognized that samples cannot be identical to their population but that the information from a group of samples is similar to the information of the population. In the last activity, they devised some ideas about random sampling even though the ideas were immature.
