  • This study explores the possibility and development plan for science career education in the lower grades of elementary school. Accordingly, science career education programs were developed and applied. We investigated changes in perception and interest in science before and after the programs, and analyzed surveys, research journals, student worksheets, and interview records. Science career education programs for lower-grade elementary school students have a positive effect on the perception of scientists and science. Moreover, they influence students' interest in science. Lastly, students' perception of this program was positive and gave high marks to all parameters such as interest, participation, and understanding of the program.

  • This study aims to apply a maker education program in an online class for a unit in elementary science entitled "Life of a Plant." Furthermore, it aims to investigate the effect of the program on the interest of students in science and creative problem-solving. The theme of the proposed maker education program is "Making a fairy tale audio book with the theme: the life cycle of a plant." The program consists of activities intended to produce creative audiobooks using concepts learned from the TMI maker education model stage. The result points to the positive effect of maker education on the interest of elementary school students in science and creative problem-solving. Therefore, applying the maker education program to online classes for elementary science is effective in improving the interest of students. In addition, further research is required to effectively apply the maker education program to online classes in science.

  • This study developed a field trip program called "Planning a science exhibition" and explored elementary science-gifted students' perceptions of the program and learning experiences influencing them. To this end, 56 elementary science-gifted students in grades 4-6 from in an university-affiliated science-gifted education institute in metropolitan area were selected to participate in the field trip program. After the program, the students answered a survey regarding their perceptions of the program. Additionally, 19 students were selected for group interviews to further explore their survey responses. Results showed that many elementary science-gifted students perceived the program positively in various cognitive and affective aspects. Some students also pointed out certain limitations of the program. Five interconnected learning experiences were identified as influencing the students' perceptions: "experiences fostering creativity", "non-residential camp-type project-based learning experiences", "self-directed learning experiences", "experiences utilizing digital devices", and "collaborative experiences". Educational implications regarding these results were discussed.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Thinking Science program on the cognitive acceleration and cognitive processing skills of the elementary school students. Subjects included 305 5th grade students in three elementary schools. Subjects were divided into the experimental and the control groups. Thinking Science program was implemented to the experimental group over a period of two years. Statistically significant gains on the cognitive acceleration were shown by the experimental group compared with the control group. The intervention effects on the cognitive acceleration were shown for the girls of the elementary schools. It was also found that Thinking Science program exerted significant effect on the development of the cognitive processing skills of the students. The experimental group gained higher scores of attention and simultaneous processing skills compared with the control group. This implied that Thinking Science program was effective not only on the cognitive acceleration but also on the development of the cognitive processing skills as a far-transfer.

  • This study examined the elementary school teachers' present utilization of science museums in teaching-learning and their perceptions of the educational programs in science museums. The results indicate that teachers have not utilized science museums as intimately as possible with formal instruction, therefore, the students' experiences of science museums are usually limited. The main reasons for lower than optimum usage of science museums in their teaching and learning is not because of its insignificant educational effects, but because of the lack of external and administrative support mechanisms. The elementary school teachers prefer to commit to programs in science museums such as science camps or experiment activities, and those exhibitions which have some kind of clear and discernable relation to the school curriculum. The results also indicate that most teachers want to participate in the various activities of science museums, such as developing and managing the programs or pre- and post activities for museum field trips, participating in the teachers' community in science museums, and so on.
