  • Computer education in France has begun in the 1960, and the education system covering elementary and middle school was completed in 2018. Since the industrialization of France, the research on the instructional method and system on computer science education had been conducted for over 60 years as a core skill to prepare for the future society. There are four major implications we have figured out in this study. First, each achievement goal to be achieved is set based on the hierarchy of school grades. Second, the full establishment of computer science education was completed in three years after the curriculum was announced in France. Third, the contents are presented to enhance problem solving ability through programming algorithms based on the balance between computer literacy and the concepts of computer science. Fourth, the contents of integrated computer science education is considered with in the lower grades of elementary school, and it is proposed to deepen understanding and programming of computer literacy and the concept of computer science as the grade and school level get higher.

  • Purpose : This study compared the differences in power and agility of athletes in each sports using visual response speed test (VRST) scores after conducting 10 weeks of body stability exercise (BSE) on elementary school athletes in handball, football, volleyball and conducted a post-hoc test on the measured values. The subjects of this study were baseball (n=27), taekwondo (n=22), and football (n=23) athletes with at least two years of athletic experience. A total of 72 elementary school athletes were measured by VRST after 10 weeks of BSE under the same conditions. Methods : For VRST measurement of the upper extremity, the right and left hands were alternately touched in the order the blazepod equipment lights were turned on. The number of touches for 15 seconds and response touch were measured. In the case of the measurement of lower extremity the left lower extremity was measured first when the Blaze pod equipment light came on. The average value was obtained by measuring 3 times using a measurement sensor with the position indicated in order to measure the upper arms and legs the same. Results : This study confirmed homogeneity among sports and that VRST improved after implementing BSE for sports. However, no statistically significant difference was identified when comparing VRST improvements between sports, and post-hoc test results showed no significant differences either. Conclusion : After applying the BSE program under the same conditions for 10 weeks to elementary school students who can improve their power and agility the most, the results of the examination using the Blaze pod showed that the power and agility of baseball, taekwondo, and soccer players were similarly improved. From the fact that there was no significant difference among sports, it could be inferred that the BES training program could improve VRST without being limited to some sports.

  • Drawing on Bronfenbrenner's ecological system, the study explored the effect of the ecological variables affecting library satisfaction for mothers of early school-age children. The study used the eighth wave(2015) of Panel Study on Korean Children and conducted correlation analysis, multiple regression analysis, hierarchical regression analysis, and stepwise regression analysis. Researchers selected ecological variables for each ecological system based on previous studies. Results showed that mothers had moderate satisfaction with libraries, and their satisfaction with libraries was affected by library accessibility, satisfaction with public services, type of residence, children's reading time, and supportiveness of parenting policy. The study showed that external factors such as family, community, and policies could affect library satisfaction along with internal factors in the sociocultural context. The study suggested a possible practical implication for library policy.

  • This study was performed to investigate the preference and perception on fruits especially, focusing on apples and pears served in elementary school lunch programs. The subjects of this study were 1,106 students (504 female and 595 male students)from seven elementary schools in Seoul. The survey was conducted by using self-administered questionnaire from July 10 to July 20, 2006. Based on the frequency analysis results, 45% of respondents ate fruits every day and 42% had fruits 2-3 times per week. Approximately, 53% of respondents indicated their usual time to eat fruits was after dinner and secondly 27% had fruits between lunch and dinner. Majority of respondents chose a watermelon as the most preferred fruits and the first chosen among nine fruits (apple, pear, madarin, strawberry, cherry tomato, watermelon, grape, melon, and peach). Cherry tomato was found as the least preferred fruits by 30% of students, however cherry tomato was most frequently offered fruits in elementary school lunch menu. About 50% students were satisfied with the served fruits in their school lunch program. In addition, most students said that they would have fruits more frequently in their lunch menu. However, one fifth of students addressed that they were not satisfied with the fruits in school lunch program because of kinds of fruits, freshness of fruits, taste of fruits, and quantity of fruits. Almost 71% of students preferred apples. Seventy three percents of students preferred eating apples without peel and 78% of students ate apples as slices of apples. In addition, 61% of students indicated their preference of apple salads. Many students responded they did not eat apples and pears frequently since they do not have a chance to eat them. The implications to increase the chance to eat fruits and promote elementary children's fruits consumption were discussed.

  • The prevalence of atopic dermatitis (AD) in children has increased dramatically in recent years. Although AD has genetic determinants, this rapid increase is most likely due to changes in environmental influences--for example, dietary changes. The purpose of this case-control study was to assess the relationship between the risk of developing AD and dietary factors, including eating habits, food intake, and the consumption of various functional foods in children at ages of 7 or 8 years. 143 AD patients and 335 healthy children participated in this study. A mini-dietary assessment was utilized to evaluate the food intake and dietary patterns of the children, and other information, including demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, eating habits, and the frequency of functional food use was collected using a questionnaire. The results demonstrated that, among the demographic and socioeconomic factors assessed in this study, female gender, mother's employment, and the family history of AD significantly increased the risk of AD. However, no differences in dietary habits and specific food intake between AD patients and healthy controls were identified. On the other hand, the frequencies of taking multivitamin supplements, Spirulina, or gamma-linoleic acid were significantly higher in AD patients than in the controls. These data indicate that alterations in eating habits and the intake of certain foods may not be a critical cause associated with the risk of AD in school-age children, and caution should be taken in recommending food elimination diets for the purpose of preventing AD. Further studies are required in order to determine whether the intake of specific nutrients could contribute to the increase or prevention of the development of AD in school-age children.

  • This study investigated the mapping errors induced in learning the concept of reaction rate with analogies, and compared these mapping errors by the analogy presentation types. Tenth graders (N=418) at a high school were assigned to the four groups by the target concepts and the analogy presentation types. The target concepts were 'concentration and reaction rate' and 'temperature and reaction rate'. In presenting analogy, the verbal and the verbal/pictorial analogs were used. After the students learned one of the analogs, a mapping test was administered. From the analysis, eight types of mapping errors were identified: overmapping, artificial mapping, failure to map, rash mapping, mismapping, mapping of a superficial feature, retention of a base feature, and impossible mapping. According to the analogy presentation types and the features of the target concepts, there were some differences in the frequencies of mapping errors. Educational implications of these findings are discussed.

  • Measurement in elementary school mathematics is one of the mathematical concepts that is directly used in real life. This study is based on the fact that mathematics textbooks for 3-4 and 5-6 graders were developed as the government designed and authorized textbooks and the general measurement instruction process is condensed and presented considering the limitation of the textbook's space for the capacity and weight. Its contents were analyzed. The results are as follows. The contents of authorized textbooks and government designed textbook are different in detail but similar overall in comparative activities, recognition, and situation of the need for the introduction of standard unit and estimation activities. Through this, it is proposed that efforts are needed to reform national textbook policies and develop textbooks that can highlight the meaning of each measurement activity and focus on students' activities.
