  • A new approach for determining global threshold value for image binarization is proposed in this paper. In the proposed algorithm, bit-plane information which involve the shapes of original image is used for dividing image into two parts object and background, and then compared each average values. Optimal threshold value are selected in center of two averages. Proposed method is relatively simple but robust and achieved good results in continuous tone images and document image.

  • In this paper we propose a new method for choosing the initial values of Expectation-Maximization(EM) algorithm that has been used in various applications for clustering. Conventionally, the initial values were chosen randomly, which sometimes yields undesired local convergence. Later, K-means clustering method was employed to choose better initial values, which is currently widely used. However the method using K-means still has the same problem of converging to local points. In order to resolve this problem, a new method of initializing values for the EM process. The proposed method not only strengthens the characteristics of EM such that the number of iteration is reduced in great amount but also removes the possibility of falling into local convergence.

  • The successful outcome of dental implants is mainly the result of intial implant stability following placement. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of a self-tapping blades and implant design on initial stability of two tapered implant systems in poor bone quality. The two different implant systems included one with self-tapping blades and one without self-tapping blades. D4 bone model using Solid Rigid Polyurethane Form was used to simulate poor bone densities. The insertion torque during implant placement was recorded. Resonance frequency Analysis (RFA), measured as the implant stability quotient (ISQ), was assessed immediately after insertion. Finally, the implant-bone specimen was transferred to an Universal Testing Machine to measure the axial pull-out force. Insertion torque values and maximum pull-out torque value of the non self-tapping implants were significantly higher than those in the self-tapping group (P = 0.008). No statistically differences were noted between the two implant designs in RFA. Within the each implant system, no correlation among insertion torque, maximum pull-out torque and RFA value could be determined. Higher insertion torque of the non-self-tapping implants appeared to confirm higher clinical initial stability. In conclusion, implants without self-tapping blades have higher initial stability than implants with self-tapping blades in poor bone quality.

  • This study examined the longitudinal relationship between paternal depressive symptoms and maternal depressive symptoms simultaneously. This study also identified the interplay of paternal and maternal depressive symptoms for predicting elementary children's language development, their problem behaviors and their school adjustment. Using the data from the Panel Study on Korean Children for the 4th-8th years (2011~2015 year), this study used the Latent Growth Curve Model, which is helpful for examining longitudinal relationship differences among variables. The sample subjects were 1,754 parents and children. The results are as follows. The initial level of paternal depressive symptoms had a positive impact on the rate of change in maternal depressive symptoms. The initial level of maternal depressive symptoms had a negative impact on the rate of change in maternal depressive symptoms. Mothers' depressive symptoms showed not only the mothers' own depression problem. but also the self-effect and counterpart effect of depression on the fathers' depression problem. The rate of change in maternal depressive symptom mediated the relation between the initial level of parental depressive symptoms and children's receptive language, internalizing/externalizing problems, and school adjustment. Therefore, depression prevention and intervention programs for both fathers and mothers are needed for the healthy development and school adaptation of school-age children.

  • In order to determine the three-dimensional position in photogrammetry, a spatial resection is a pre-requisite step to determine exterior orientation parameters. The existing spatial resection method is a non-linear equation that requires initial values of exterior orientation parameters and has a problem that a gimbal lock phenomenon may occur. On the other hand, the spatial resection using quaternion is a closed form solution that does not require initial values of EOP (Exterior Orientation Parameters) and is a method that can eliminate the problem of gimbal lock. In this study, to analyze the stability of the quaternion-based spatial resection, the exterior orientation parameters were determined according to the different layout of control points and were compared with the determined values using existing non-linear equation. As a result, it can be seen that the quaternionbased spatial resection is affected by the layout of the control points. Therefore, if the initial value of exterior orientation parameters could not be obtained, it would be more effective to estimate the initial exterior orientation values using the quaternion-based spatial resection and apply it to the collinearity equation-based spatial resection method.

  • This study aims to investigate the interdependence of Korean middle and old-aged couples in the association between exercise and life satisfaction through grip strength trajectory. Data were drawn from the nationally representative Korea Longitudinal Study of Aging (KLoSA) collected from 2006 to 2016. The sample included couples over 45 years of age in the first wave and participated in all six waves of the survey (Ncouple=1,997). There were three steps for analyses: correlation, parallel latent growth curve model, tests of indirect effects of the mediation paths. Covariates included in the models were husbands and wives' characteristics (age, education, work status, chronic diseases, marital satisfaction, contact frequency with friends or neighbors) and couple's household income. Results showed husbands' and wives' life satisfaction and grip strength were interdependent upon each other. Also, exercise participation of both husbands and wives was associated with both husbands' and wives' life satisfaction via the initial level of grip strength of husbands. Moreover, exercise participation of only husbands was associated with wives' life satisfaction through the initial grip strength of husbands. These results suggest the aging processes of middle and old-aged couples need to be understood in the context of gender dynamics and couple interdependence.

  • This paper proposes a method to determine the initial equilibrium state of cable members for preliminary analysis of multi-span suspension bridge under dead load. The proposed method is simpler and more practical than the previous methods used in other studies. The proposed method can be applied to three-span or multi-span suspension bridges. To verify the proposed method, an three-span model as well as four-span models such as New Millenium Bridge in Korea and Yingwuzhou Bridge in China are analyzed. In the verification results, the initial coordinates and tensions of the members calculated by the proposed method are good agreement with those in the previous study for the three-span model and those in the design data of New Millenium Bridge. In addition, the proposed method gives the initial values to keep the initial configuration of Yingwuzhou Bridge.

  • The effect of MoO$_3$ addition on the permeability of Mn-Zn ferrites was studied. 600 ppm, 800 ppm and 1,000 ppm of MoO$_3$ were added to the main composition after calcination. Ferrite cores were sintered at 135$0^{\circ}C$ for 3hrs, followed by cooling according to the equilibrium oxygen concentration. The initial permeability was about 8,000 with heating rate 5$^{\circ}C$/min for 3hrs without MoO$_3$ addition. When 600 ppm and 800 ppm of MoO$_3$ were added, the initial permeabilities, 13,200 and 13,550 were obtained, respectively. However, the sample with 1,000 ppm MoO$_3$ showed lower permeabilities because of abnormal grain growth. At the heating rate 1$0^{\circ}C$/min, the ferrite cores with 1,000 ppm MoO$_3$ demonstrated the highest initial permeability greater than 15,000, without exaggerated grain growth.

  • An algorithm for the threshold decision from the maximum mismatching correlation value in a direct-sequence spread-spectrum system is presented. This algorithm is named the TDMMC(Threshold Decision from the Maximum Mismatching Correlation value). The purpose of the algorithm is to set the decision threshold in the system which will provide large probability of signal detection. Using this algorithm, the proper setting of the threshold for various SNRs is possible. An additional block called the Threshold Block is used to improve the system performance. The result from the computer simmulation has shown that appling the TDMMC to the noncoherent DS/SS-CSK system can achieve performance improvement.

  • The output values of cellular neural networks would have errors because they can be stabilized at local minimums depending on the initial states of each cell. So, in this paper, we design the $6\times6$cellular neural networks with annealing capability which guarantees that the outputs reaches the global minimum to have correct output values independent of the initial states of each cell. This chip is designed using a $0.8\mu\textrm{m}$ CMOS technology The designed chip contains about 15,000 transistors and the chip size is about $2.89\times2.89\textrm{mm}^2$. The simulation results of edge extraction and hole filling using the designed circuit show that the outputs values would have errors in un-annealed case, but not in annealed case. In the simulation, the annealing time of $3\musec$ is employed.
