The purpose of this study was to examine effects of self-control and social support (e.g., parents, peer, teachers) on bullying victimization and perpetration among early adolescents. 377 youths (11-14 years of age) from elementary and middle schools participated in the study. The data from these subjects were analyzed using the SPSS 18.0. The results of this study may be summarized as follows. There were differences by gender on bullying victimization and perpetration. Among boys, the factors influencing bullying victimization were social support from close friends and self-control. Among girls, the factors influencing bullying victimization were social support from parents and self-control. The factor influencing bullying perpetration was self-control for both boys and girls.
The purpose of this study is to examine the associations among attention deficit/hyperactivity, social withdrawal, peer relationships, and depression in early adolescence. Gender differences in the associations were also examined. This study investigated these relationships and the gender differences using structural equation modeling multi-group analysis. The third wave data from Korea Children and Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS) of fourth graders were analyzed. The results indicated that attention deficit/hyperactivity had significant effects on depression directly and indirectly through social withdrawal and peer relationships. These results suggest that new programs should be developed to prevent or alleviate depression associated with attention deficit/hyperactivity among adolescents. Specifically, social withdrawal and peer relationships need to be emphasized in planning prevention or intervention programs to promote mental health of adolescents with attention deficit/hyperactivity.

This study examined the onset of adolescent delinquency through discrete-time survival analysis. Our analysis used data obtained from the Korean Children & Youth Panel Survey, and included 2,277 middle school students. The main analysis results are as follows. First, the hazard probability for the occurrence of delinquency was the highest at 16.6% in the second year of middle school, slightly decreased in the third year of middle school, but continued to increase as the overall grade increased. Second, adolescent psychological and emotional factors have significantly affected the onset of delinquency. Third, negative parenting methods had a significant impact on delinquency, but neglect was not significant. Fourth, having delinquent friends was an important factor affecting the status of delinquency. Fifth, among the school factors, adjustment of learning activities, adjustment of school rules, and adjustment of friendship relations influenced the status of delinquency, while the adjustment of teacher relations was not significant. As early intervention is important to prevent juvenile delinquency, education and support for establishing healthy relationships are needed.

Objects:It is difficult to differentiate between attention deficit hyperactivity disorder(ADHD) and mania because of similar symptoms and atypical symptoms of mania in children and adolescents. The purpose of this study is to identify the characteristics and to clarify the relationship by comparing the clinical features and comorbidities of ADHD and manic patients. Methods:The subjects consisted of 35 patients with ADHD and 19 manic patients. To Compare the characteristic symptoms between the two disorders, we selected 29 patients with ADHD and 14 patients with manic disorders. 6 ADHD patients who had manic disorders as comorbid disorder, and 5 manic patients who had ADHD as comorbid disorders were manic disorders were excluded. Results:1) There were significant differences in ages of onset and state anxiety scale scores, birth weights, numbers of perinatal problem, gestational ages, school behavioral problems between ADHD patients and manic patients(p<0.01). 2) There were significant differences in loses things(p<0.05) of ADHD-symptoms and grandiosity(p<0.01), decrease in sleep(p<0.05), delusions(p<0.01), hallucinations(p<0.05) of mania-symptoms between ADHD patients and manic patients. 3) The comorbid disorders of ADHD patients are significantly high(p<.05) than that of manic patients in major depression. 4) The familial loading of manic patients are significantly high(p<.05) than that of ADHD patients in mood disorder. Conclusions:The above results suggest that ADHD and mania are different disorders, considering the significant differences of clinical features and characteristics, familial loadings of the two disorders.

This study analyzed the latent profile for identifying the difference in the dependence on smartphone use among middle school students in the 1st grade using the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS). From the result of this study, first the latent class was separated according to the type of dependence on smartphone use. Class 1 included the students (from fifth grade in elementary school) whose level of reliance on smartphone use was low. Class 2 was selected as the group whose level of reliance on smartphone was high. Secondly, in comparing class 2 to class 1, it was found that the students who have a high probability of being in class 1 were those whose fathers are high achievers, have high early self-esteem and less age attachment. Thirdly, the students in class 1 had a higher sense of neglect than those in class 2. Furthermore, the self-determination of the students in class 2 mediated the effect of neglect on the adolescents' dependence on smartphone use both directly and indirectly.
This study sought to identify developmental trajectories of bullying victimization from late elementary school through early high school, and to examine internalizing and externalizing problem outcomes associated with the trajectory group membership. Data from Seoul Panel Study of Children were collected annually over a 7-year period from 5th grade of elementary school through 2nd grade of high school (2005~2011). Latent class growth analysis yield three trajectory classes corresponding to stable low (81.2%), stable high (3.5%), and declining bullying victimization (15.6%). Findings from analysis of covariance indicated that students in both stable high and declining trajectory groups reported significantly higher means in internalizing behavior (withdrawal, depression/anxiety, and suicide ideation), compared to those in the stable low group. For externalizing behavior such as aggression and juvenile status offense, students in the stable high group showed higher means, compared to those in the stable low and declining trajectory groups. Developmental pattern of bullying victimization over multiple development stages and associated internalizing and externalizing outcomes are discussed as are the implications for the bullying prevention.
Objective: This study aimed to investigate the trajectories of mobile phone use with reference to its purposes, and to examine the effects of gender and interpersonal factors on the same in early adolescents. Methods: Latent growth modeling was used with a sample of 2,378 early adolescents from Grade 4 to 8. Data from the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey conducted by the National Youth Policy Institute were used. Results: In boys and girls, overtime, the level of mobile phone use for communicating with family decreased, while that for communicating with friends increased. Level of mobile phone use for entertainment increased across time in boys; however, in girls, it increased from Grade 4 to 6 and decreased thereafter, until Grade 8. Gender was associated with the changes of mobile phone use according to the purpose of the same. Positive parenting, negative parenting, relationships with peers, and relationships with teachers predicted changes in mobile phone use for communicating with friends. Conclusion: These findings suggest that the processes involved in the trajectories of mobile phone use in early adolescence operate differently based on the purposes of the same. Additionally, the present results show that interpersonal factors are highly associated with mobile phone use for communicating with friends.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effect of internet use type on the relationship between parental attachment and school life adjustment. Methods: For this study, data were drawn from 4th wave panel data of Korea Children and Youth Panel Survey. 1,537 1st graders of middle school were used for analysis. Results: The results of this study were summarized as follows. First, adolescents' parental attachment positively influenced school life adjustment. Second, study oriented internet use positively influenced school life adjustment. However, entertainment oriented internet use negatively influenced school life adjustment, and relation oriented internet use did not influence school life adjustment. Third, study and entertainment oriented internet use mediated parental attachment and school life adjustment. However, relation oriented internet use did not mediate parental attachment and school life adjustment. Conclusion: The discovery that study oriented internet is a factor that can improve school life adjustment carries a significant meaning. Based on the results, some implications are discussed to improve school life adjustment in early adolescence.
There have been constant studies on adolescents' fandom activities since the 2000s. Since their fandom activities are a subculture of adolescents, it is necessary to recognize it as such and to help them in a way that minimizes its adverse effects. In this regard, this study examined the effects of fandom activities on life satisfaction and examined whether or not self-esteem has a moderating effect. To this end, the study used the 6th year data of first graders of elementary school from Korea Youth Panel Survey conducted by Korea Youth Policy Institute and analyzed the data of a total of 1,088 of them. The results of this study are as follows: First, a negative correlation was found between their fandom activities and life satisfaction and between their fandom activities and self-esteem. A positive correlations was found between their fandom activities and life satisfaction, Second, it was found that adolescents' fandom activities negatively affected life satisfaction while self-esteem had a moderating effect on the relationship between fandom activities and life satisfaction. The significance of this study lies in the fact that it identified the variable that can moderate the negative role of adolescents' fandom activities, which provided a basis for future in-depth studies on the relationship between adolescents' fandom activities, individual internal variables, and life satisfaction.

Objective:This study is designed to get clinical guidelines for management of children with TBI by examining neuropsychiatric sequelae of TBI, determining whether the severity of TBI, type of treatment, and enviornmental factors are related to those sequelae, and defining the adequacy of public psychological tests as evaluating tools for them. Method:This is chart review of 47 children, aged 5 to 14 years, referred to a psychiatric outpatient clinic for neuropsychiatric evaluation at least 6 months after TBI. Data on the initial GCS score, associated injury, treatment type, and duration of hospital stay are obtained from medical records. EEG, MRI, intelligent test, and several psychological tests are administrated at the point of assessment. Results:1) Cognitive symptoms outnumber externalizing behavioral, emotional, and somatic symptoms, with no significant differences of frequencies of those 4 categorical symptoms between mild injury group and moderate to severe group. 2) Children treated with non-surgical method(p<0.01) complain more cognitive symptoms than the others. 3) Behavioral symptoms are related to younger age(p<0.05), and to anticonvulsant medication(p<0.05). 4) Children with associated injury complain emotional symptoms more frequently(p<0.05). 5) More somatic symptoms are presented by children with no medication(p<0.05), and with higher I.Q(p<0.05). 6) Low I.Q is correlated to low GCS score (p<0.05). Cognitive impairment is confirmed in 25 in 42 children complaining cognitive symptoms though I.Q test and BGT, whose hospital stay is longer than the others(p<0.05). 7) emotional disturbance is confirmed in 22 in 25 children showing emotional problems through psychological tests, who complain cognitive symptoms more frequently(p<0.05). Conclusion:This findings suggest that even mild TBI children need to be followed-up and treated as complaining neuropsychiatric symptoms over 6 months after injury, and shorter hospital stay is recommended for cognitive and emotional status of children, and for better evaluation of neuropsychiatric sequelae of TBI, more specific tests should be included in neuropsychological test tools.
