A Study on the Application of Outsourcing of the Technical Services in the Academic Libraries -With Special Regard to Busan and Hyung-nam Area- (정리업무와 대학도서관의 아웃소싱에 관한 연구 -부산, 경남지역을 중심으로-)

  • The purpose this study is tend to consider the direction and policy making when the libraries make a decision of outsourcing with the analysis of the application experiences of outsourcing in the academic libraries (including junior college libraries). The research method of this study is questionnaire technique with the theoretical search. The results of the study are as follows: Libraries which experienced outsourcing are satisfied with the results. The subject of the outsourcing are most focused on the cataloging. The efficiency rate was high when the library staffs was participated in the implementation of outsourcing. And respondents answered that the lack of professionalism of vendors which made the outsourcing difficult and reference work is impossible to outsource in the near future.

  • The recent situation on developments in an expanding field of reference and information service is reviewed through the cooperative arrangements and comprehensive planning among libraries in America. The growth of reference cooperation is examined first along with the social forces that influenced the library interdependence for service. Of the various interlibrary programs identified in relation to the cooperative reference work, interlibrary loan is viewed as the key to the use of library resources based on equal access and making use of the tools for information and research, therefore a reference principle. Several kinds of library systems specifically intended to improve the reference situation are identified and described in detail without any attempt to evaluate their performance in terms of unit size, cost, or quality of the service.

  • It is the prime importance of the information and the reference-librarians to better understand the communication functions of the library since they are the ones to whom the library users come first with their informational needs. Reference librarians often have the problem of providing information to those who may have little experience with, or interest in the library. There is also a problem of finding out what the person really wants, not what he says he wants. Therefore, the interaction between the librarian and the user involves a highly complex activity of communication with each other even before the actual search begins. Reference librarians cannot perform to any degree of success without comprehension of the general patterns and processes of communication in information seeking. Nonverbal as well as verbal transmittal process on the part of both librarians and patrons should not be overlooked. Some of the difficulties and barriers of library communication are brought so that possible cures and improvement may be sought. The basic purpose of the reference interview through which this interpersonal communication takes place is for the reference specialist to enable to link the needs of the patron with potential resource of the library. The writer firmly believes that this importance of the process be taught as well as the materials in reference service regardless of the level of the course offered in library science department.

A Study on the Development of Internet-based Information Services for the Older Adults (노인들을 위한 인터넷기반 정보서비스 구축에 관한 연구)

  • Information service for the aged is a new challenge for public libraries in Korea. To develop an internet-based information service at public library perspectives, information sources, information need, and information seeking and using behavior are investigated. Interview survey is performed to 1060 adults aged 60 and over. Finding revealed that the respondents led to few channels to information except for mass media and informal oral communication. It ascertain ways in which 23% of the respondents currently use internet, and identify barriers of nonusers. The information need of the elderly are diverse, but health/medicine, news, hobbies, religion, leisure/travel are most identified need in descending order. Based on data analysis and previous research results, a cooperative service model consisting of information contents, online reference, interface design, and education is developed. Finally problems and suggestions for future improvement are discussed.

  • This study used content analysis to examine the research methods in Library and Information Science journals from 1997 to 2001. Analyses measured research subjects, research method, data collection methods, data analysis methods, hypotheses, theories and research funds. Brief consideration is given to possible future methodological trends : web-based research methods, qualitative research, cooperation between academic society and librarians and research fundraising.

Library Anxiety and library Anxiety Scale in the Digital Library Environment (디지털 도서관에서의 도서관불안과 측정도구 분석)

  • As affective barriers to library and information use, library anxiety(Mellon, 1986) has been studied in reference/information services and bibliographic instructions. The paper revisits Mellon's theory of library anxiety and Bostick's(1992) Library Anxiety Scale(LAS) in the digital library environment. In particular, this study attempts to address the inadequacy of the continued applications of LAS in the digital library environment, although the scale has been used unquestionably as the instrument measuring library anxiety. This contention was substantiated by three service trends in digital libraries(i.e., digital reference services, remote access, and transition from bibliographic instructions to information literacy) and by re-analyses of published library anxiety research papers in recent years. This study addresses the need for scale development that could measure anxieties of digital library users. It also suggests Information Literacy Anxiety Scale(ILAS) as a direction for the new scale.

A study on the teaching method of reference service course (참고봉사과목의 교수방법에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the teaching methods a n.0, pplied to the basic reference education. Especially, the independent study method in reference education-PSI, AT and PI method used in 1970s at the library schools in the United States was examined in detail. The conclusions and suggestions drawn from this study are as follows : 1) The studies concerned with the teaching method in library and information science education in Korea is very scarce. Studies in this area are needed. 2) In order to improve and innovate the teaching method, instructor' knowledge and understanding of the various teaching methods are essential. The library and information science instructors' efforts should be made in this respect. 3) Instructional materials developed through the research activities concerned with teaching method should be shared among the instructors of the reference education and the device for such sharing should be made.

First this study will verify the erects of bibliotherapy in developing the ego-identity of university students. Secondly, this study will verify the necessity of reading guidance as one of the active reference services of the university library.

  • Information inquiries asked of the 'Librarian's Community' will reveal the real problems and interests of the university libraries. This paper intends to find out in what areas the university libraries have most problems and interests and how serious they are by analyzing the contents of inquires. To identify the issues, the works in the university libraries including acquisition, cataloging, reference services, library automation and Interlibrary loan were analyzed. This research also tries to identify if the issues need to be handled by the legal or solved by individual libraries.

  • Instruction is an emerging critical factor of library services and the practice of instructional activities has expanded to related various areas. This study analyses librarian job advertisements to identify roles, responsibilities, and job qualifications of instruction librarian. Findings include reference services and collection development are important Parts for instruction librarians' work as well as instructional activities. Knowledge on web and instructional applications are also emphasized in the job description of instruction librarians.
