  • The pedestrian green time is usually long at wide width intersections. This sometimes causes the increase of delay on the whole intersection because of long cycle length and thus small g/C ratio on some direction. In this paper, to improve these problems, staggered pedestrian crossing was evaluated on the vehicular and pedestrian aspects. The results were gained by using both TRANSYT-7F and VISSIM model. The vehicle control delay of the staggered pedestrian crossing was estimated to be decreasing than that of the general pedestrian crossing by 14.9% to 85.6%. The pedestrian average delay of two pedestrian crossing systems was examined by analytical method and VISSIM. According to the analytical method there was no significant difference between each pedestrian crossing system. The pedestrian delay of staggered pedestrian crossing was from 13.4% to 22.3% than the general pedestrian crossing by VISSIM. In conclusion, the staggered pedestrian crossing was more effective than general pedestrian crossing for both the vehicle and the pedestrian. However this conclusion was resulted from micro simulation where traffic volume condition, v/c, was from 0.8 to 1.1.

  • This study deals with the effectiveness of roundabout. The goal is to comparatively analyze the operational effectiveness related to the conversion of rotary to roundabout in Korea. In pursuing the above, this study gives particular attentions to investigating the existing 20 rotaries and developing the networks of before-and-after improvement using VISSIM, and comparatively analyzing the effectiveness. The domestic rotaries were analyzed to need many improvements of geometric structure for the effective operation of roundabout. The main results are as follow. First, when the present condition of traffic volume were applied, the operational effect of rotary were evaluated to be better than roundabout, but the difference analyzed to be small. Second, the average delay per vehicle in the rotaries of urban area were analyzed to rapidly increase according to the growth of traffic volume. Finally, the average speed of roundabout were evaluated to be less (about 10km/h) than that of rotary, because the traffic volume of rural area were less than that of urban area.

  • This research proposes new tram signal coordination model, called MAXBAND MILP-Tram for a passive tram signal priority strategy. The proposed model was formulated based on the MAXBAND model that was a traditional arterial signal optimization model. The model could calculate the bandwidth solutions for both general-purpose-lane traffic and median-tram-lane traffic. Lower progression speed are applied for the tram traffic considering lower running speed and dwell time at the stations. A phase sequence procedure determines the green times and left-turn phase sequences for tram traffic in median tram lane. To estimate the performance of the MILP-Tram model, the control delay of trams were estimated using the micro simulation model, VISSIM. The analysis results showed 57 percent decrease of the tram compared to the conventional signal timing model. The delay for car, however, increased 18 percent. The sensitivity analysis indicated that the passive tram signal priority strategy using the offset and phase sequence optimization was effective in reducing the person delay under the congested traffic condition.

  • This study has proposed the signal operating system to use both semi-actuated signal control and pedestrian push-button as a way to make up for the problems of 3 leg intersections which are operated inefficiently in the signal operation, one of the methods of traffic operations. In case of the semi-actuated signal control, it can reduce delay inside the intersection by serving to uncongested traffic on the main road where there is not much traffic volume on the secondary road and push-button signal can reduce unnecessary waiting time it could happen to vehicles by operating it though there is no pedestrian. Quantitative analysis was tried regarding the average delay reduction per vehicle using VISSIM, microscopic simulation program regarding how much effect it has compared with the existing signal control system and semi-actuated signal control system when the above two advantages are collected. The field test was performed for one three-leg intersection of Incheon. According to respectively signal control method pedestrian traffic changed and executed a sensitivity analysis. The result which compares the average delay time per a vehicle of scenarios, the signal control method of using the pedestrian push-button system in comparison with the fixed signal control method showed to decrease effect of a minimum 3.7 second (10%), a maximum 5.8 second (16%). When the pedestrian traffic volume was 20% or less of the measurement traffic volume, The signal control method of using the pedestrian push-button system appeared to be more efficient the semi-actuated signal control with object intersection.

  • In order to improve traffic flow and vehicular safety, installation of roundabouts is encouraging recently. Roundabouts are generally installed at which traffic flow and pedestrian flow is relatively low intersections. Roundabouts reduce vehicle speed, minimize vehicle weaving, and reduce critical conflict points. For these reasons, roundabouts are generally operated unprotected pedestrian crosswalk, thus a shortcoming for pedestrian safety always exists at roundabouts. The purpose of this study is developing a dynamic signal metering algorithm for traffic and pedestrian at four-way-approach with two-lane roundabouts in which three different operation algorithms(fixed-time pedestrian, vehicle signal metering, and vehicle and pedestrian signal metering) are suggested and its performance is tested by using VISSIM. The results of the fixed pedestrian signal operation show that there is a big average delay increase in general and that increases up to 51.4 seconds/vehicle(42.5%) when the total number of approaching vehicle is 3,800 vehicle/hour. However, the results of the simultaneous dynamic signal metering operation for the vehicle and pedestrian crossing with push button show that there is a substantial average delay reduction up to 40.6 seconds/vehicle(42.7%) when the total number of approaching vehicle is 3,000 vehicle/hour.

  • This study deals with the operational effectiveness of roundabout. The roundabout is currently under consideration in our country depending on the result of existing researches, that the roundabout decreases delay and is environmentally friendly compared to the signalized intersection. The purpose of the study is to analyze the operational effectiveness of the roundabout by the change of pedestrian traffic volume. In pursing the above, this study gave particular emphasis to designing a network of roundabout, developing some scenarios for analysis including both entering traffic volume and pedestrians volume, and comparatively analyzing the average controlled delay time per vehicle. In this study, VISSIM model was used as a tool for traffic simulation. The main results are as follows. First, as a result of analyzing a traffic delay based on the pedestrian traffic volume, pedestrian traffic volume was analyzed to have a great impact on the roundabout operation. Second, the more pedestrian traffic volume were evaluated to indicate the more traffic delay. When the entering volumes with 1,000persons/hour (pedestrian volume) were more than 800pcph in the single-lane and 1,600pcph in the double-lane roundabout, the operational efficiencies of signalized intersections were evaluated to be better than those of roundabouts.

  • The purpose of this study is to provide the criteria for implementing unprotected left turn at intersections with variation of traffic volume on a cross road approach. Using Transyt-7F model, the delays calculated from permissive and protected left turn signal system were compared by gradually increasing the left turn volume for a certain opposing through volume up to the volume limits to which permissive left turn is more effective, Average stopped delay of the intersection was used as the measure of effectiveness in this study. The major conclusions are (1) the lighter the traffic gets in a cross road, the more the allowable left turn volume increases. The allowable left turn volume when the ratio of cross traffic to the concerned approach traffic is 0.6 appears about 50% more than the volume when the ratio is 1.0. (2) Comparing to the criteria of the manual of traffic safety facility, the results when the traffic ratio is 0.6 seem to be most similar the criteria of manual and the results when the traffic ratio are 0.8 and 1.0 appears to be lower than the criteria of manual. (3) The possible amount of making a left turn that is inversely proportional to the opposing through traffic, decreases as the number of opposing through lanes increases. The products of volume need to be used as the criteria of permissive left turn with considerable cautions because of its low consistency.

  • The roundabout is a green transportation system which reduces the accident, the congestion cost and greenhouse effect. The purpose of the study is to analyze the multi-legged roundabout's efficiency. In pursuing the above, this study gives particular attention to building the optimal network of multi-legged roundabout and intersections, developing the scenarios for analysis reflected by the proportion of entering traffic volume of main and minor roads, and comparatively analyzing the average delay per car using VISSIM. The main results are as follows. First, when the entering traffic volume are less than 3,500pcph, the 5-legged single and double-lane roundabout are all analyzed to be more effective than intersection. Second, when the entering traffic volume are less than 3,600pcph, the 6-legged single-lane roundabout is analyzed to be more effective than intersection. The 6-legged double-lane roundabout is analyzed to be more effective than intersection. The 6-legged double-lane roundabout is analyzed to be more effective than intersection in all cases of entering volume.

  • At present, the length of deceleration lane at freeway diverging areas are designed based on the design speed of main lines and ramps. This is possible on assumption that diverging vehicles decelerate at deceleration section after moving to shoulder lane in advance. But with high diverging volume, several vehicles will try to change to exit lane at the same time. This will cause the distribution of main lane flows or some vehicles may encounter short deceleration length because they miss the proper time to change the lane. The purpose of this study is to establish a design guideline of the length of deceleration section considering the volume of diverging traffic. Also, the results of analysis by the FRESIM simulation model shows that some improvements in respect of delays, speeds and speed deviations of mainline and deceleration lane.
