  • A method was developed for the separation of titanium, niobium and zirconium together in a group from the coexisting ions of various metals such as iron, cobalt, nickel, yttrium and rare earths by means of the cation exchange column using ${\alpha}$-hydroxyisobutyric acid as the eluent. In the course of the present investigation, it was found that the tailing phenomena of zirconium were attributable to the hydroxide precipitation which was made prior to the elution. For example, if zirconium was precipitated by sodium hydroxide, the tailing of zirconium became very serious in contrast to the results reported by others. This paper describes how these tailing phenomena of zirconium were prevented and how a practical procedure for the separation of these ions was, achieved using ion-exchange method. Using the present method the nuclides of $^{90m}Y$ and $^{90}Y$ were separated with radiochemical purity from the irradiated zirconium.

  • It is investigated that that the physical properties of Glutathione layer formed on gold surfaces may make an effect on the distribution of either gold particle adsorbed to the $ZrO_2$ surface or vice versa with the adjustment of the electrostatic interactions. For the investigation, the atomic force microscope (AFM) was used to measure the surface forces between the surfaces as a function of the salt concentration and pH value. The forces were quantitatively analyzed with the Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) theory to estimate the surface potential and charge density of the surfaces for each condition of salt concentration and pH value. The estimated-value dependence on the salt concentration was described with the law of mass action, and the pH dependence was explained with the ionizable groups on the surface. The salt concentration dependence of the surface properties, found from the measurement at pH 4 and 8, was consistent with the prediction from the law. It was found that the Glutathione layer had higher values for the surface charge densities and potentials than the zirconium dioxide surfaces at pH 4 and 8, which may be attributed to the ionized-functional-groups of the Glutathione layer.

  • The physical properties of mercaptoundecanoic-acid layer formed on gold surfaces, which may affect the distribution of either gold particles adsorbed to the zirconium dioxide surface or vice versa, were investigated. To conduct this investigation, the surface forces were measured between the surfaces with respect to the salt concentration and pH value using atomic force microscope (AFM). The forces were quantitatively converted by the Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) theory to the surface potential and charge density of surfaces. The converted-value dependence on the salt concentration and pH was described with the law of mass action, and the dependence was consistent with the theoretical prediction. It was found that the mercaptoundecanoic-acid layer had higher values for the surface charge densities and potentials than the $ZrO_2$ surfaces, which may be attributed to the ionized-functional-groups of the mercaptoundecanoic-acid layer.

  • Solvent extraction experiments have been conducted to separate Zr(IV) and Hf(IV) from chloride solutions by using LIX63 and Cyanex301. Zr and Hf were extracted by cation exchange reaction in the pH range from 1 to 4 by the extratants. Since the extraction percentage of the two metals was similar to each other, it was difficult to separate the two metals by using LIX63 or Cyanex301. Use of a mixture of LIX63/TBP or Cyanex301/TBP resulted in antagonism in our experimental ranges. Our data showed that there is some possibility of separating the two metals by the mixture of Cyanex301 and TBP because the extraction percentage of Hf decreased more rapidly than that of Zr as HCl concentration was decreased. The mixture of LIX63 and Cyanex301 had little effect on the separation of the two metals.

  • Adsorptive stripping voltammetric determination method of trace zirconium using oxine as a ligand was studied. Optimal conditions found to be $2.5{\times}10^{-3}M$ borax buffer solution(pH 8.5) containing oxine concentration of $4{\times}10^{-8}M$. Accumulation potential was -0.2V, accumulation time was 400sec and scan rate was 4mV/sec. Calibration plots for zirconium are linear over the range of $1{\sim}100{\mu}g/L$ in optimal condition.

  • This paper investigated far-infrared emission characteristics of ZrC imbedded heat storage knitted fabrics for emotional garment. For this purpose, ZrC imbedded heat storage PET was spun with high viscosity PET imbedded ZrC powder on the core part and low viscosity PET on the sheath part by conjugated spinning method. Ingredient analysis and far-infrared emission characteristics assessment of spun filament were carried out by EDS and FT-IR spectrometer. Two kinds of knitted fabrics were made using texturized ZrC imbedded PET for measuring thermal characteristics of ZrC imbedded heat storage PET. Zr peak was certified by EDS measurement and it was confirmed that content of Zr was 19.29%. Far-infrared analysis revealed that emission power at the range of wavelength, $5{\sim}20{\mu}m$ was $3.65{\times}10^2W/m^2$, and emissivity was 0.906. Heat storage analysis by KES-F7 system revealed that $Q_{max}$ of ZrC imbedded PET knitted fabric was lower than that of regular PET one and warmth keepability rate was higher than that of regular one, which means that ZrC imbedded PET knitted fabric has heat storage property. Thermal conductivity of ZrC imbedded PET knitted fabric was higher than that of regular PET one which was caused by high thermal conductivity of Zr itself. Hand property of ZrC imbedded knitted fabric was not inferior compared to regular PET knitted fabric, which preferably was found to be dependent on knit structure and surface property.
