  • An equivalent homogeneous 3-D linear composite analysis and accomponying finite element program is presented for elastomeric bearings. This study is limited to the 3-D layered system with linear, elastic, isoparametric small deformation. And we used method of multiscale to model the 3-dimensional configurations and overall response of the layered elastomeric bearings with global and local coordinates. The primary dependent variables for the theory have been selected that require only $C_o$ continuity of the finite element analysis. As a result, it is very simple and computationally economical. The presented theory can also be applied easily to the analysis of nonlinear behavior of layered systems. And those of past are not applicable to nonlinear analysis, because it uses superposition theory. Numerical examples are presented to verify the theory and to illustrate potential applications of the analysis.

  • A higher order zig-zag plate theory is developed to accurately predict fully coupled mechanical, thermal, and electric behaviors. Both the in-plane displacement and temperature fields through the thickness are constructed by superimposing linear zig-zag field to the smooth globally cubic varying field. Smooth parabolic distribution through the thickness is assumed in the transverse deflection in order to consider transverse normal deformation. Linear zig-zag form is adopted in the electric field. The layer-dependent degrees of freedom of displacement and temperature fields are expressed in tern-is of reference primary degrees of freedom by applying interface continuity conditions as well as bounding surface conditions of transverse shear stresses and transverse heat flux. The numerical examples of coupled and uncoupled analysis demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the present theory. The present theory is suitable for the predictions of fully coupled behaviors of thick smart composite plate under mechanical, thermal, and electric loadings combined.

  • The purpose of this study is to make a conceptual framework for comprehensively and dynamically understanding region which is based on an interaction among space, time, and society. Region is not naturally and objectively given, but socially constructed based on material space, and such a socially constructed region takes an active role for changing society because of the conflicts either within the region or among the regions. Particularly the social theory which tries to establish the new perspectives to the interaction between space and society is not much concerned about the relations between space and time and also those between society and nature. The theory of space and time scale is needed to deeply understand space, time, and society/nature.

  • Acoustic radiation efficiency is a crucial factor to estimate Underwater Radiated Noise (URN) of ships accurately. This paper describes a numerical method to analyse acoustic radiation efficiency of one side-wetted rectangular Mindlin plate with simply supported boundaries excited by a harmonic point force. Transverse displacements of plate and acoustic radiation pressures are evaluated by the mode superposition method. The acoustic radiation efficiencies analyzed by both Mindlin and thin plate theories show little differences at monopole and corner modes of low frequency regions but relatively large differences at edge and critical modes of high frequency regions. Especially, the critical frequency with the highest acoustic radiation efficiency evaluated by the Mindlin plate theory is higher than that of thin plate theory. In addition, the acoustic loading effect of fluid also increases bending wave-number of plate and its critical frequency. Finally, the acoustic radiation characteristics of plates with different aspect ratios and thicknesses through numerical analyses are investigated and discussed.

  • For precise stress analysis of pressure vessel nozzle junction area, it should be modelized as a cylindrical shell with a cylindrical outlet attached on it, but because of its geometrical complexity, exact analysis and solution is very difficult to obtain. So, when the nozzle diameter is small compared to that of vessel, it is general to simplify the model as a flat plate with a cylinder. As the current nozzle shape is manufactured as "Through Type" to reduce the stress concentration around the nozzle junction part of pressure vessel, a theoretical analysis on the cylinder with finite length should be performed to accomodate this fact. In this paper, the general solutions which were obtained by applying Fulgge's theory to the finite length cylinder, membrane and bending theory to the flat plate were superposed to analyze the model. Each theoretical optimal values were obtained through the analysis of stress concentration caused by the variation of cylinder length and thickness, and these results were estimated by performing model experimentation.mentation.

  • The effectiveness of UAM is generally accepted, but there has not been much rigorous study on UAM and its mechanical support mechanism is yet to be established. Also, most of UAM installations depend on empirical judgement rather than on engineering knowledge. In this study, an attempt to confirm the support effects and to understand the support mechanism of UAM has been made by analyzing the mechanical behavior of umbrella pipes installed in various ground conditions. The effects of overburden thickness, pipe size, overlap length and the placement of steel arch are studied using a three-dimensional finite element method. From the numerical parametric study, the support mechanism of UAM has been confirmed by analyzing the structural forces in the umbrella pipes due to the excavation.

  • This paper describes a method for evaluating the vertical hull girder vibratory response associated with slamming of a ship at sea. The ship hull is considered as a nonuniform beam divided into twenty equal sections. Impact forces and structural parameters are used as input quantities on the computer (PRIME 550-II) to obtain the hull girder response in terms of relative displacements, accelerations, bending moments, shear forces, and stresses. Sample calculations are made on a MARINER-Class hull form using first three modes and again using first ten modes and again using first ten modes. The computed response is compared with Antonides's result in order to evaluate the adequacy of the method employed. It is believed that the method is another noticeable one to obtain whipping stresses of a ship to a seaway.

  • Photoreaction path for the monocyanochromium (Ⅲ) ion was inferred from the experimentally observed product ratio and theoretical analysis. The angular overlap model was used to analyze the d-orbital of various intermediates along a selected reaction coordinate and to determine quartet state energy level. A loss of equatorial ammine leads to pentacoordinated square pyramid with CN- ligand in an equatorial position. The SP(CNeq) intermediate undergoes a rearrangement by the N-Cr-CN bending. This process leads to a trigonal bipyramidal intermediate in which the CN- ligand is located in equatorial position. The subsequent association with a solvent molecule should probably proceed by lateral attack an one edge of the equatorial triangle. The assumption adopted above was consistent with experimental results.

  • Recently, the need of wast incineratory has been recognized. However, the waste incinerator is considered the typical example of NYMB syndrome as a locally unwanted facilities. Therefore, the site selection of waste incineratory should be determined very carefully with consideration of various location factors. The purpose of this study is to provide a new decision-making process model for site selection that provides a rational and a systematic way. The fuzzy set theory and AHP theory, which have merits to overcome uncertainly and complexity of spatial data, are applied to select candidate sites for the waste incineratory. The method is able to produce a more flexible and objective solution for selecting suitability sites in comparison to rigid boolean logic. The result of this study shows that geographic information systems have clear implication for informing the spatial decision making process.

  • Linear estimation in isotropic turbulence is examined to approximate conditional averages in the form of fluctuating velocity fields conditioned on local velocity. The conditional flow fields and their associated vorticity field are computer using experimental data [Van Atta and Chen] and energy spectrum model [Driscoll and Kennedy]. It appears that ring vorticies could be the dominant structure. Due to the extremely large vorticity in the viscous region of a conditional ring vortex, the energy spectrum model can be used appropriately by changing the Reynolds number. The hairpin vortex could be detected by combining vorticies in isotropic field with an anisotropic orientation imbedded in uniform mean shear flow and this is consistent with other studies [Kim and Moin].
