  • Theory of minimal surfaces has always been in the center of differential geometry. The most difficult part in minimal surfaces is how to find meaningful examples. In this paper we survey the history of search for minimal surfaces. We also introduce examples of recently emerging maximal surfaces in the Lorentz-Minkowski space and compare the processes in the search for the minimal and the maximal surfaces.

  • Korea and China have maintained close relationships since the ancient times along with Japan, which also shares the common Chinese culture. The three major players in Northeast Asia have been recognizing their increasing importance in politics, economy, society, and culture. Considering those relationships among the three countries, it's necessary to compare and investigate their mathematics terminology. The purpose of this study is to investigate the similarities and differences between the terminology of school mathematics in Korean, Chinese and Japanese. The mathematics terms included in the junior high school of Korea were selected, and the corresponding terms in Chinese and Japanese were identified. Among 133 Korean terms, 72 were shared by three countries, 9 Korean terms were common with China, and the remaining 52 Korean terms were the same as Japanese terms. Korea had more common terms with Japan than China, which can be explained by the influences of the Japanese education during its rule of Korea in the past. The survey with 14 terms which show the discrepancy among 3 countries were conducted for in-service teachers and pre-service teachers. According to the result of the survey, preferred mathematics terms are different from one group to the other, yet the Korean mathematics terms were more preferred in general. However some terms in Chinese and Japanese were favored in certain degree. This result may provide meaningful implications to revise the school mathematics terms in the future.

  • Even though fractions make up one of the most important concepts in the domain of numbers in elementary math, it is difficult to teach or learn them due to their different quantity concepts and notation methods from natural numbers and their various concepts. The didactic transposition of fractions is thus important, and there is a need to examine the didactic concepts of fractions used in the South Korean textbooks for its research. This study compared elementary math textbooks among South Korea, Taiwan, and China and investigated differences in the instructional time and order of fraction concepts in the textbooks according to their didactic concepts and also differences in the instructional methods according to quantitative concepts.

  • Chinese mathematical curriculum is divided 4 areas(number and algebra, space and figure, statistics and probability, practice and synthetic application). The purpose of this paper is to analyze the contents of the practice and synthetic application in yanbian elementary textbook. For this, 12-textbook which was published in yeonbeon a publishing company is analyze by topic, mathematical process, area of content and mathematical activity. mathematical process The following results have been drawn from this study. First, contextual backgrounds of practice are restricted in classroom. The contents of synthetic application are limited in connection of mathematical areas. Mathematical problem solving is a main in mathematical process, whereas reasoning activity is a few. Mathematical experience activity is a main in mathematical process, whereas synthetic activity is a few. We can use the suggestions of this paper for development of textbook and the contents of mathematical process.

  • In December 2019, new coronavirus (COVID-19) which was started from Wuhan caused a dramatic changes in college mathematics education around the world from the spring semester 2020. All classes in college was switched to online classes at once. As a result, many efforts were made to keep the quality of mathematics education in college. We have discussed the situation that we did experience and discussed a possible changes that future mathematics education and research can face in the post-corona era (after coronavirus, AC era). Finally, we discussed an evaluation method for student activities that can be used in online class evaluation.

  • In this study, we analyzed and discussed the instruction method of multiplication tables in mathematics textbooks from four countries in Asia; South Korea, China, Japan, and Singapore. The conclusions of remarks are states as follows: First. The teaching period and elements should be subdivided more structurally so that the learner could understand the concept and principle of multiplication tables better. Second. The bundle model, the linear model, and the array model of multiplication need to be presented so that the learners could experience various situations related to multiplication. Third, The concrete explanation and the higher frequency of presenting the commutative rules of multiplication is suggested so that the learner could understand the concept of the rules well. Fourth. The context related to multiplication by 1 and 0 should be presented so that the learner could comprehend the character of multiplication by 1 and 0. Fifth. The activities which helping memorizing a multiplication table should be suggested when the memorization is needed.

  • Shanghai has been reported as the highest performing countries(economies) in PISA 2009 and PISA 2012. In this reason, we reviewed literatures related to educational system of Shanghai focusing on the mathematics education. Additionally, we analysed the results of PISA 2009 of mathematics domain between Korea and Shanghai to compare some differences between two countries. As a result, we discovered the followings: 1) Comparing with Shanghai students, Korea students attained low performance in every sub-categories of mathematics abilities indicated in the PISA framework. 2) In PISA 2009 Framework, Korea students produced low achievement than Shanghai students in sub-categories of "reflection". 3) In PISA 2012 Framework. Korea students attained low performance than Shanghai students in sub-categories of "formulating". Consequently, it gave us insight into the idea that school mathematics in Korea should use authentic context to help students improve their competencies "reflection" and "formulating".

  • The Rule of False Position is known as an arithmetical solution of algebraical equations. On the other hand, the Excess-Deficit Rule is an algorithm for calculating about excessive or deficient quantitative relations, which is found in the ancient eastern mathematical books, including the nine chapters on the mathematical arts. It is usually said that the origin of the Rule of False Position is the Excess-Deficit Rule in ancient Chinese mathematics. In relation to these facts, we pose two questions: - As many authors explain, the excess-deficit rule is a solution of simultaneous linear equations? - Which relation is there between the two rules explicitly? To answer these Questions, we consider the Rule of Single/Double False Position and research the Excess-Deficit Rule in some ancient mathematical books of Chosun Dynasty that was heavily affected by Chinese mathematics. And we pursue their historical traces in Egypt, Arab and Europe. As a result, we can make sure of the status of the Excess-Deficit Rule differing from the Rectangular Arrays(the solution of simultaneous linear equations) and identify the relation of the two rules: the application of the Excess-Deficit Rule including supposition in ancient Chinese mathematics corresponds to the Rule of Double False Position in western mathematics. In addition, we try to appreciate didactical value of the Rule of False Position which is apt to be considered as a historical by-product.
