  • We identified the diversity, geographical distribution, ecological characteristics of birds, trees, and flowers species designated as local government symbols as a means for understanding public awareness on biodiversity. A total of 114 species including 48 birds, 40 flowers, 36 tree species belonging to 40 orders 59 families 90 genus were designated as natural symbols. Pica pica (L.) in birds, Rhododendron schlippenbachii Maxim. among flowers, have also been designated as symbols. The tree Ginkgo biloba L. was designated with the highest frequency. Local governments located coastal area were selected bird species of the Laridae family and the tree species Camellia japonica L., of Pinaceae as their natural symbols. In contrast, local governments located inland have designated resident bird species such as P. pica and Columba rupestris (Pallas) and flower species from the Ericaceae as natural symbols widely distributed and easily observed throughout South Korea. However, many local governments have designated the same species as a natural symbol based on their size color and public appeal and popularity. The information about the popular species and their ecological traits are useful for establishing the criteria as flagship or iconic species selection and their roles in habitat conservation.

  • Vehicle platooning through wireless communication and automated driving technology has become realized. Platooning is a technique in which several vehicles travel at regular intervals while maintaining a minimum safety distance. Truck platooning is of keen interest because it contributes to preventing truck crashes and reducing vehicle emissions, in addition to the increase in truck flow capacity. However, it should be noted that interactions between vehicle platoons and adjacent manually-driven vehicles (MV) significantly give an impact on the performance of traffic flow. In particular, when vehicles entering from on-ramp attempt to merge into the mainstream of freeway, proper interactions by adjusting platoon size and inter-platoon spacing are required to maximize traffic performance. This study developed a methodology for establishing operational strategies for truck platoonings on freeway on-ramp areas. Average speed and conflict rate were used as measure of effectiveness (MOE) to evaluate operational efficiency and safety. Microscopic traffic simulation experiments using VISSIM were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of various platooning scenarios. A decision making process for selecting better platoon operations to satisfy operations and safety requirements was proposed. It was revealed that a platoon operating scenario with 50m inter-platoon spacing and the platoon consisting of 6 vehicles outperformed other scenarios. The proposed methodology would effectively support the realization of novel traffic management concepts in the era of automated driving environments.

  • Accelerated soil erosion due to extreme climate change, such as increased rainfall intensity, and human-induced environmental changes, is a widely recognized problem. Existing soil erosion models are generally based on the gross erosion concept to compute annual upland soil loss in tons per acre per year. However, such models are not suitable for event-based simulations of erosion and deposition in time and space. Recent advances in computer geographic information system (GIS) technologies have allowed hydrologists to develop physically based models, and the trend in erosion prediction is towards process-based models, instead of conceptually lumped models. This study aims to propose an effective and robust distributed rainfall-sediment yield-runoff model consisting of basic element modules: a rainfall-runoff module based on the kinematic wave method for subsurface and surface flow, and a runoff-sediment yield-runoff model based on the unit stream power method. The model was tested on the Cheoncheon catchment, upstream of the Yongdam dam using hydrological data for three extreme flood events due to typhoons. The model provided acceptable simulation results with respect to both discharge and sediment discharge even though the simulated sedigraphs were underestimated, compared to observations. The spatial distribution of erosion and deposition demonstrated that eroded sediment loads were deposited in the cells along the channel network, which have a short overland flow length and a gentle local slope while the erosion rate increased as rainfall became larger. Additionally, spatially heterogeneous rainfall intensity, dependant on Thiessen polygons, led to spatially-distinct erosion and deposition patterns.

  • Hydrogeological systems in a metrnpolitan area can be understood by analyzing the groundwater disturbing factors such as constructions and land applications, the groundwater usage for domestic and industrial purposes, and the groundwater pumpage to lower the groundwater level for the structural safety of subway and underground facilities. This study is part of the study performed to understand the groundwater system in the Seoul area and it is focusing on the hydraulic properties. Groundwater well inventory, barometric efficiency measurements, pumping and slug tests, and long-term groundwater monitoring have been perfonrmed during the last 2 years. The relations between Han River and the groundwater around the river also have been observed. These observations and test data, together with the information on soil distribution, geology, and logging data are used to construct a database and GIS(Geographic Information System) presentation system using ARC/INFO. Barometric efficiencies appeared to have no special trends associated with well depths, which maeans that the degree of confinement of the crystaline rock aquifer of the Seoul area is distributed locally depending on the developrnent of fractures. Hydraulic conductivities exponentialiy decrease with well depth. The stage of Han River fluctuates according to the tidal movement of nearby seawater but the tidal effects attenuate due to the underwater dams. Groundwater levels in the Seoul area seem to have declined for the last two years, but it is not certain that the declination represents the long-term trend.

  • Case-based reasoning is an efficient method to find solutions for new problems by using past cases after appropriate changes. It is widely used in everyday life because it resembles the way human acts. In this paper, we propose a military system that generates the most appropriate tactics for CGF (Computer Generated Forces) by utilizing past practices. It indeed applies case-based reasoning at the process of armed conflict. When the CGF squad on a mission, they will be given an action plan to reach the final goal. In the process of executing, tactics for specific action should be organized such as attacks, ambushes, and tactical moves. By using the proposed method, tactics were generated by case-based reasoning. The proposed system successfully receives input through each command and control agent, measures the degree of similarity with the case in case DB, selects the most similar case, modifies, uses, and then stores it for next time.

  • This study was performed to analyze the process and develop the pattern of school dropout in the context of the Korean educational systems. Participants were 30 adolescents experiencing dropout one more times and their age ranged from 16 to 23. A major category derived and analysed from a grounded theory method of Strauss and Corbin(1990). The qualitative analysis indicated that dropout is contradictory experiences in Korea. Because it is emancipation from various distress of school systems as well as loss of various benefit as students, Main causes of dropout were identity problems, school frustrations(failure in school achievements), environmental disadvantaged and delinquencies. Sometimes these various causes are emerged at the same time. Most important condition of context which was decided was whether dropout was voluntary and considered. After dropout from school, it was important if there were resources such as emotional and informative supports. Especially informative support was critical to adjust after dropout. Dropout experience was divided largely into 4 patterns such as type of 'searching the identity', 'being disorganized', 'escaping' and 'frustration'. In chronological analysis resulted in 4 stages including 'stage I. loss of motivation', 'stage II. escaping from school', 'stage III. trial and error', 'stage IV changing the meaning of dropout in the life.

  • High-resolution Solid-state NMR provides element specific and quantitative information and also resolves, otherwise overlapping atomic configurations in multi-component non-crystalline silicates. Here we report the preliminary results on the effect of composition on the structure of CMAS (CaO-MgO-$Al_2O_3-SiO_2$) silicate glasses, as a model system for basaltic magmas, using the high-resolution 1D and 2D solid-state NMR. The $^{27}Al$ MAS NMR spectra for the CMAS silicate glasses show that four-coordinated Al is predominant, demonstrating that $Al^{3+}$ is network forming cation. The peak position moves toward lower frequency about 4.7 ppm with increasing $X_{MgO}$ due to an increase in $Q^4$(4Si) fraction with increasing Si content, indicating that Al are surrounded only by bridging oxygen. $^{17}O$ MAS NMR spectra for $CaAl_2SiO_6$ and $CaMgSi_2O_6$ glasses qualitatively suggest that NBO fraction in the former is smaller than that in $CaMgSi_2O_6$ glasses. As $^{17}O$ 3QMAS NMR spectrum of model quaternary aluminosilicate glass resolved distinct bridging and non-bridging oxygen environments, atomic structure for natural magmas can also be potentially probed using high-resolution 3QMAS NMR.

  • In this study, we propose an association inference model based on data bias optimization for road hazard detection. This is a mining model based on association analysis to collect user's personal characteristics and surrounding environment data and provide traffic accident prevention services. This creates transaction data composed of various context variables. Based on the generated information, a meaningful correlation of variables in each transaction is derived through correlation pattern analysis. Considering the bias of classified categorical data, pruning is performed with optimized support and reliability values. Based on the extracted high-level association rules, a risk detection model for personal characteristics and driving road conditions is provided to users. This enables traffic services that overcome the data bias problem and prevent potential road accidents by considering the association between data. In the performance evaluation, the proposed method is excellently evaluated as 0.778 in accuracy and 0.743 in the Kappa coefficient.

  • The outdoor coal storage sheds of thermal power plants are being converted to indoor coal storage sheds worldwide because of the environmental pollution problems in the surrounding areas. On the other hand, indoor coal storage sheds are causing problems, such as indoor coal scattering and harmful gas generation. In this study, the ventilation method of indoor coal storage sheds was analyzed in terms of the internal flow characteristics and ventilation according to the outside wind velocity and direction. CFD analysis was performed based on the actual flow measurement information inside the indoor coal storage sheds. A comparison of the wind speed of 6 m/s and 2 m/s when the outside wind direction was easterly showed that the stream velocity to the monitor louver was faster and the recirculation area was clearer at 6 m/s than at 2 m/s. In addition, the trend of a westerly wind was similar to that of the easterly wind. The ventilation rate according to the wind speed was 13.1 times and 4.4 times for a wind speed of 6 m/s and 2 m/s, respectively. If the wind speed is 2 m/s, the situation does not meet the required number of ventilations per hour in a general plant, and needs to be improved.

  • A home network provides users with a variety of information services. The kind and quality of the services can be substantially enhanced by utilizing a variety of data from sensors. However, home networks currently limit their potential by focusing on providing multimedia services rather than services utilizing sensor data. Outdoor electronics are frequently made in a form that emphasizes only certain limited functions in contrast to home appliances. Thus, sensors with one or two functions rather than many can be used in outdoor systems and their use will be more economical than using sensor nodes indoors with more complex home appliances. In this study, we chose to work with motion sensors as they have many potential uses, and we selected a parking lot control system with to use the motion sensors. This parking lot control system was implemented and applied as part of a home network. For this purpose, we defined and implemented a protocol to manage the network in a ubiquitous sensor network environment for the wireless home network in this study. Although a network management system in a Ubiquitous Sensor Network (USN) related to this study is being advanced for other projects, the protocol interface and message system have not yet been clearly defined for use in a general purpose network or in an extension into heterogeneous kinds of networks, communication support, etc. Therefore, USN network management should be conducted for management of faults, composition, power, and applications. To verify the performance of the protocol interface designed in this study, we designed and implemented the necessary units (sensor nodes, sensor gateway, and server) for each network section and, with them, proved the validity of this study.
