Bearing capacity of a drilled shaft can be separated into side resistance and base resistance. But in domestic design procedure side resistance is usually underestimated compared with base resistance. Results of bi-directional test showed that measured side resistances in each different layers are larger than those evaluated from several suggested methods. In this study, measured side resistances in each different layer of drilled shafts installed in domestic sites are analyzed and compared with evaluated side resistances from the method using revised SPT N value. For weathered rock and soft rock layer, from which rock core can hardly be obtained, we suggested new evaluated methods using revised SPT N value instead of the method using uniaxial compressive strength of rock. Resuts showed that the ranges of side resistance of cohesive and non-cohesive layer are $f_s{\leq}5tf/m^2$ and $f_s{\leq}15tf/m^2$ respectively. Range of side resistance in weathered rock is $15tf/m^2$ < $f_s{\leq}50tf/m^2$ and that in soft rock $f_s{\geq}35tf/m^2$.

Recently, numerous structures have been constructed near the Nakdong river estuary, with pile foundations embedded in sand and gravel layers. In this study, the side resistance for six drilled shafts embedded in that region was evaluated based on the results of bi-directional and static axial compressive pile load tests. Subsequently, these results were compared with the side resistance calculated using domestic and foreign design codes such as FHWA (1999), KDS (2021), and AIJ (2004). Based on the test results, the evaluated side resistances ranged from 120 to 444kPa. However, the estimated values obtained from the design codes ranged from 69.3 to 170kPa, which were less than 50% of the evaluated values. It was observed that the empirical methods and correlations used in design codes provide a conservative estimation of the side resistance for drilled shafts embedded in sand and gravel layers. It implies that a suitable domestic approach should be developed to accurately estimate the side resistance of pile in sandy gravel and gravel layers near the Nakdong river estuary.
Though the pile skin friction can take substantial amount of load carrying capacity, it has often been ignored in the design. Even when the pile skin friction is taken into consideration, it is questionable about the reliability of estimating it. It has been even worse in Korea. since in most cases the available information is only the SPT N values and not much information has been known about the correlation between N value and the pile skin friction in residual soils. With SPLT (Simple Pile Loading Test) it is possible to measure the pile skin friction separately from the tip resistance. In this research, results of the measured pile skin friction in residual soils are analysed. And a new design correlation based on SPT N value is proposed.
The frictional capacity of auger-cast piles is often very small because of the disturbance of the soil surrounding the pile during the excavation process. Usage of expansive agents and a pressurized injection technique for auger-cast piles should improve the frictional resistance between pile and soil. This paper presents the test results of auger-cast model piles installed with expansive mortar in laboratory compacted weathered soil. The model piles were installed in a calibration chamber with a variation in the amount of expansive agent, the injection process and the chamber pressure. It was observed that the pile shaft resistance increases with the increased amount of expansive agent, and also increases when mortar is pressure injected. The shaft resistance increased up to 24% for the pile installed only with expansive mortar and increased up to 56% for the pile installed with the pressurized injection of expansive mortar, compared with that of piles with plain mortar.
H-pile can be more easily driven than pipe pile by pile driver and shows high skin friction and plugging effect. This experimental study was devoted to investigate skin friction of H group piles in granite soil under laboratory test. Pile arrangements $(1{\times}2,\;1{\times}3,\;2{\times}2,\;2{\times}3,\;3{\times}3)$, pile space (2D,4D,6D), and soil density $(D_r=40%,\;80%)$ were tested. The main results obtained from the model tests can be summarized as follows. Distribution ratio of skin friction for total load decreased by $48{\sim}39%$ (dense soil), $32{sim}27%$ (loose soil) as piles space ratio increases in case of $3{\times}3$ group piles. And the distribution ratio of skin friction by pile settlements under loose soil decreased by about $58{\sim}33.2%$ in $2{\times}2$ group piles and about $65{\sim}38%$ in $3{\times}3$ group piles respectively.
One of the methods for calculating unit skin friction of soft-rock-socket parts for cast-in-place piles involves the roughness measurement of the parts. The measurements are conducted during the excavation stage. A roughness measuring device is installed in the excavation hole and the unit skin friction is calculated from the measured surface roughness of the rock socket. Herein, the results of roughness measurement of rock-socket parts in cast-in-place piles and that of load transfer tests are analyzed and compared. The unit skin friction from the roughness measurements can be converted into unit skin friction corresponding to the displacement of a pile generated in a load transfer test. A reduction factor is given as Rf = -0.14n + 1.48.
In this paper, the empirical relations of skin friction and end bearing resistance with the results of site investigation in soft rock are proposed through the analysis of bi-directional pile load tests of rock socketed drilled shafts performed at large offshore bridge foundations and high-rise building projects (13 test piles in 4 projects). The site investigation and drilling for bi-directional pile load tests were performed at the centers of test piles, and f-w curves for skin friction and q-w curves for end bearing were plotted based on load-transfer measurements. From the above curves, the empirical relations of skin friction and end bearing resistance with the results of site investigation depending on the mobilized displacement are determined by multiple regression analysis and compared with previous studies. Since the f-w and q-w curves of rock-socketed piles in Korea show hardening behavior according to mobilized displacement, the developed empirical relations by the mobilized displacement are more reasonable than those of previous studies which could not consider the mobilized displacement and suggested the ultimate capacity with unconfined compressive strength only. Particularly, the developed equations correlated with unconfined compressive strength show the best correlations among the equations correlated with other parameters.
In the case of the drilled shaft, one of the methods for calculating unit skin friction stress of rock socket parts is to measure the roughness of the excavated face. This method is to estimate the unit skin frictional resistance using a device which measures the roughness shape of the excavated face in the excavation step. In this study, the roughness shapes of the face of the rock socket part in the drilled shaft were measured directly in the perforated hole and the results are used to identify the characteristics of the unit skin friction of the bedrock. In addition, the static load test and the load transfer test were performed on the same pile to verify the result of the roughness test.

The vertical bearing capacity of a bucket foundation installed in sand can be calculated as sum of the skin friction and end bearing capacity. However, the current design equations are not considering the non-associated flow characteristics of sand and the reduction in the skin friction and increase in the end bearing capacity when the vertical load is applied. In this study, we perform two-dimensional axisymmetric finite element analyses following non-associated flow rule and calculate the vertical bearing capacity of circular bucket foundation of various sizes installed in sand of different friction angles. After calculating the skin friction and end bearing force at the ultimate state, design equations are derived for each. The skin friction of bucket foundation is shown significantly small compared to the end bearing capacity. Considering the difference with the available design equation for piles, it is recommended that the equation for piles is used for the bucket foundation. A new shape-depth factor ($s_q{\cdot}d_q$) for bucket foundation is recommended which also accounts for the increment of the end bearing capacity due to skin friction. Additionally, the shape and depth factor of embedded foundation proposed from the associated flow rule can overestimate the bearing capacity in sand, so it is more adequate to use the shape-depth factor proposed in this study.
Rock socketed drilled shafts are used as foundations for bridges and other transportation structures because of their load carrying capabilities. However, only limited information is available in the literature on the effects of roughness on the unit side resistance of rock socketed drilled shafts. The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of drilling tools on the socket roughness in soft clay shale in Texas. Field study showed that the drilling tools, auger and core barrel, produced different roughness in the boreholes.
