This study was carried out to investigate the antioxidant activity of bamboo (Sasa borealis) leaf extract by measuring electron donating ability, superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity, reducing power, and lipid peroxidation inhibitory activity. Two crude extracts by water or 70% EtOH and five fractions of n-hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, n-butanol, and aqueous from the crude extract of 70% EtOH were prepared for this study. The crude extracts of water and 70% EtOH yielded 8.5% and 11.4%, respectively and the yields of n-hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, n-butanol, and aqueous fractions were 5.1% to 0.6%. Total polyphenol contents of the water and the 70% EtOH crude extracts were not significantly different; however, their total flavonoid contents were significantly greater in the 70% EtOH than in the water crude extract. Total polyphenol contents were the highest in chloroform fraction followed by ethyl acetate and n-butanol fractions and total flavonoid contents were the highest in ethyl acetate fraction followed by chloroform and n-hexane fractions. The two crude extracts as well as the five fractions showed election donating ability, SOD-like ability, reducing power, and lipid peroxidation inhibitory activity. Most of the antioxidant activities of each crude extract or fractions increased proportionally with the concentration. These results indicate that bamboo (Sasa borealis) leaf extracts show antioxidant activities due to its substantial content of polyphenol including flavonoid. Thus, it could be concluded that crude extracts by water or 70% EtOH and the fractions from the 70% EtOH extract, especially chloroform, ethyl acetate and n-butanol, would be useful as natural antioxidant substances.
The present study was performed to evaluate the antioxidant effect of crude extracts of Nelumbo nucifera Gaertner. Antioxidant effect was analysed by DPPH-radical scavenging activity, lipid peroxidation and superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity. DPPH-radical scavenging activity and SOD-like activity of linoleic acid, glutamic acid, ethyl acetate crude extract and ethyl alcohol crude extract of Nelumbo nucifera Gaertner were dose-dependently increased. However, lipid peroxidation of glutamic acid, linoleic acid, ethyl acetate crude extract and ethyl alcohol crude extract of Nelumbo nucifera Gaertner were time-dependently decreased. The data suggests that crude extracts of Nelumbo nucifera Gaertner may be a putative antioxidant substance and apply the development of medicine through convergence study.
Antioxidative activity of the extract from Caesalpinia sappan L. by various solvent was compared with several commercial antioxidants, using the Rancimat method. AI (antioxidative index; induction period of oil containing extract/induction period of control oil) of all extracts were higher than commercial antioxidants, such as BHA, ${\delta}-tocopherol$ and ascorbic acid. The ethanol extract was fractionated by liquid liquid extraction. Ethyl acetate fraction showed higher AI than the whole crude extract. When comparing POV and TBA value of palm oil and lard containing different level of each fraction, the oxidative stability of ethyl acetate fraction at 200 ppm level on palm oil and lard were similar to that of BHT at 200 ppm level, and better than BHA, ${\delta}-tocopherol$ and control.

In this study, we evaluated antioxidant and antiproliferating effects of Setaria italica extract (SIE), Panicum miliaceum extract (PME) and Sorghum bicolor extract (SBE). Antioxidant effects of these extracts were determined by assessing DPPH radical scavenging activity, $ABTS^+$ radical scavenging activity, reducing power and superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity. From high concentrations ($1,000{\mu}g/mL$) of each extract at DPPH radical scavenging activities of SIE, PME and SBE were 10.5%, 5.5% and 86.8% respectively, $ABTS^+$ radical activities were 4.92%, 5.9% and 62.3% respectively, reducing powers (OD 700) were 0.15, 0.18 and 1.7 respectively, and SOD-like activities were 17.0%, 15.9% and 38.6% respectively. In addition, SBE significantly decreased the cell viability of androgen-sensitive lymph node metastasis type of prostate cancer (LNCaP) cells in a dose-dependent manner. Morphological study of SBE-treated LNCaP cells revealed distorted and shrunken cell masses. SBE-induced cell death was confirmed by observation of nuclear condensation and increased formation of apoptotic bodies. The antiproliferative effect of SBE seems to be associated with the antioxidant activity of its polyphenol content. The results of this study indicate that SBE can exert antioxidant and antiproliferative effects and may be as a useful food material.

Whole plants of Corydalis heterocarpa were extracted twice with $CH_2Cl_2$ and MeOH in turn. The combined crude extracts were concentrated in vacuo and then partitioned between $CH_2Cl_2$ and $H_2O$. The organic layer was fractionated with n-hexane and 85% aq. MeOH, and the aqueous fraction was also further fractionated with n-BuOH and $H_2O$, successively. Growth inhibition effects of crude extracts and their solvent fractions were evaluated in AGS, HT1080, U-937, MCF-7 and HT-29 human cancer cells using MTT assay. The inhibitory effects of solvent fractions were increased in a dose-dependent manner. Among these tested samples, 85% aq. MeOH fraction showed the most potent inhibitory effect on the growth of human cancer cells. These results suggest that active compounds having much stronger anticancer effect can be isolated from Corydalis heterocarpa.

The present study investigated the effect of physiologically active polysaccharide (SP1) isolated from Salicornia herbacea on streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Male Spraque-Dawley rats were divided into four groups which were normal control group (NC), diabetic control group (DC), diabetic CSP group (DCSP), and diabetic SP1 group (DSP1). Animals were administrated with 2% experimental drinks for 6 weeks. The levels of glucose, triglyceride, total cholesterol, and high density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol in the serum were measured before and after intake of test compounds. The levels of glucose and triglyceride in the DSP1 were significantly lower than those in the DC by 25% and 20%, respectively. The levels of total cholesterol and high density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol in the DSP1 were similar to those in the DC. These results suggest that SP1 substantially exhibit anti-hyperglycemic and anti-hypertriglyceridemic activity in diabetic rats. Therefore SP1 is believed to show remarkable anti-diabetic effect on streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats.
The antioxidative activity of Portulaca oleracea was tested using in vitro experimental models. Antioxidative activities were determined by measuring DPPH radical scavenging activity and lipid peroxide using 2-thiobarbituric and (TBA). The crude extract was sequentially partitioned with n-hexane, 15% aq. MeOH, EtOAc, n-BuOH, $H_2O$. A remarkable antioxidative effect was observed in the EtOAc and n-BuOH fractions. The DPPH radical scavenging effect ($IC_{50}$=17.90 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml) of the n-BuOH soluble fraction was comparable with that of the natural antioxidant, $\alpha$-tocopherol ($IC_{50}$=6.99 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml) and the inhibition effect of lipid peroxidation in mouse liver homogenate was similar to that of the natural antioxidant, L-ascorbic acid at a concentration of 1.0 mg/ml to 5 mg/ml.
To develop a new functional materials, angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory activity, antioxidant effect and total phenolic content of Hovenia dulcis Thunb. cortex were evaluated. Methanol and water extract of H. dulcis inhibited ACE by 81% and 76%, respectively, at the concentration of $4,000\;{\mu}g\;m{\ell}^{-1}$ which were similar level with that (85%) of commercial peptide-type ACE inhibitor. Superoxide radical scavenging activity of two extracts $(99.5%{\sim}99.9%)$ were stronger than that (69%) of ascorbic acid at the final concentration of $200\;{\mu}g\;m{\ell}^{-1}$. Among the solvent fractions, ether and ethylacetate fraction showed also potent scavenging activities (91% and 85%) for superoxide radical. Inhibitory activities of two extracts on oxidation of human low density lipoprotein (LDL) which were similar with that of ${\alpha}-tocopherol$, were higher than 80% at the concentration of $50\;{\mu}g\;m{\ell}^{-1}$. Total phenol contents of methanol and water extracts were 7.2% and 3.6%, respectively, and that of ethylacetate showed the highest value as 60.8% among the solvent fractions. Therefore, it has been suggested that H. dulcis cortex could be a effective anti-hypertention and antioxidant resource to develope a new functional material.

We investigated the antioxidant of heating pork, the physicochemical properties and antioxidative activities of Rubus coreanus Miq. extracts. The contents of moisture, crude fat, crude protein, crude fiber, and crude ash were measured. Soluble solid, acidity, pH and mineral contents were also investigated. The ethanol extract of Rubus coreanus Miq. was evaporated, and then sequentially extracted by hexane, ethyl acetate, butanol and water. The contents of total polyphenol ranged from 24.5 mg tannic acid equivalents (TAE) per g to 82.5 mg in all fractions. Antioxidative effects were investigated through DPPH free radical scavenging, $ABTS{\cdot}^+$ scavenging and TBARS methods. It was found that ethanol extract ($2,000\;{\mg}/mL$) and butanol extract ($1,500\;{\mg}/mL$) had 89.93% and 89.68% of DPPH free radical scavenging activities. As for ABTS, all extracts ($1,000{\sim}2,000\;{\mg}/mL$) except hexane showed over 90% scavenging activities. The lowest TBARS values were obtained from extract of ethyl acetate and ethanol, and their antioxidative activities were higher than that of ascorbic acid. The results of this study indicate that the ethyl acetate and ethanol extract of Rubus coreanus Miq. may be substituted for ascorbic acid in heating pork.
It is well known that the Petasites japonicum have been used for a long time in traditional medicine for the treatment of allergic diseases such as lacquer poisoning and asthma. Anti-allergic actions of Petasites japonicum extracts were asessed by testing their effects on the degranulation of mast cells. For this, hexosaminidase released (degranulation marker) from RBL-2H3 cells(mast cell line) was used. At the concentration of 300 $\mu\textrm{g}$/mL of the methanol, ethylacetate and hot water extract, the degranulation of RBL-2H3 cells were inhibited 83.33, 69.75 and 35.4%, respectively. These results suggest that the Petasites japonicum could be provide a effective resource for the control of allergic diseases.
