Recently developed illite-age-analysis (IAA) approach has been applied to determine the multiple events for the Singal and Wangsukcheon faults in the Chugaryeong fault belt, Korea. Fault reactivated events during Late Cretaceous to Paleogene events($69.2{\pm}0.3$ Ma and $27.2{\pm}0.5$ Ma) for the Singal fault and of $75.4{\pm}0.8$ Ma for the Wangsukcheon fault were determined by combined approach of the optimized illite-polytype quantification and the K-Ar age-dating of clay fractions separated from the fault clays. These absolute geochronological determinations of the multiple tectonic events recorded in the Chugaryeong fault belt are crucial to establish the tectonic evolution of the Korean Peninsula since Late Cretaceous.
This study analyzed lineaments and fault-related landforms in Chungcheongnam-do, central Korean Peninsula, based on historical and instrumental records, given its susceptibility to future earthquakes. We extracted 151 lineaments associated with fault-related landforms. In regions with the Dangjin and Yesan faults, lineaments with strikes matching these faults were densely distributed. Conversely, in the Hongseong Fault area, the number of lineaments was smaller, and those with strikes similar to the fault were less discernible. This is likely due to the extensive distribution of alluvium and surface deformation from long-term weathering, erosion, and cultivation, which obscures geomorphic evidence of faults. At five key fault points, we identified fault-related landforms, such as fault saddles, knickpoints in Quaternary alluvium, and linear valleys, along the lineament, which may indicate an actual fault. However, the displacements of the Quaternary layer within the lineaments appear to be influenced more by external factors, such as artificial disturbances (e.g., cultivation) or stream erosion, than by direct fault movement. The differences between the fault-related landforms in this study area and those in the southeastern Korean Peninsula suggest a specific relationship between fault types and their associated landforms.
The dynamic evolution of the Chugaryeong fault valley is studied by paleomagnetic works on 163 samples at 16 sites from Late Cretaceous and Quaternary volcanic rocks in the valley. Conglomerate test and stepwised thermal/alternating field demagnetization indicate that all the characteristic directions are of primary origin. Paleomagnetic pole ponsition(216.8$^{\circ}$E/7l .6$^{\circ}$N; dp=7.1$^{\circ}$, dm=10.0$^{\circ}$) for the upper par of the Jijangbong Volcanic Complex Is indistinguishable from the coeval retference pole position from the Gyeongsang Basin, which further substanciates the reliability of the Paleomagnetic data. This indicates the study area has not undergone any tectonic rotation since Late Cretaceous by uy significant reactivation of the Chugaryeong fault valley. The Quaternary pole position (134.2$^{\circ}$E/86.5$^{\circ}$N; $A_{95}$=7.1 $^{\circ}$) from the Jeongog Basalt reflects the present geocentric axial dipole field for the area, supporting the above conclusion. Unlike the upper part, paleomasnelic directions of the lower part of the Jijangbong Volcanic Complex show random distrinution between sites. We interpret that the early stage of the volcanic activity was created by sinistral strike slip motion of the Chugaryeong fault during early Late Cretaceous. The creation and evolution of the Chugaryeong fault valley emphasize the significance of the kinematic FR (folding ruler) model in east Asia.
To clarify the geological structure of Yangsan fault around Sangchon-ri in the southern part of Kyungsang Basin the resistivity (dipole-dipole profiling) and VLF surveys carried out on the four profiles, crossing the inferred trace of the fault. The resistivity contrast across the fault is clearly shown on the profiles: higher resistivity and lower resistivity on the east and west, respectively. It is most likely from the uplift of the granitic bedrock on the east park due to the strike-fault raulting with vertical movement. The zero-crossing points of VLF anomalies, associated with near-surface fracture zone, are found to well correlate with the resistivity boundaries from the dipole-dipole profiling. Consequently, southern segment of Yangsan fault (at Sangchon-ri area) is interpreted to be vertically developed strike-slip fault with a difference more than 10m depth of basement rock at both sides.
We analyzed the Coulomb stress transfer near a small-scale reverse fault. For the modeling we used the geometry of a Quaternary fault in Gyeongju area, Eupcheon fault. For an assumed reverse faulting slip of 10cm, the resulting values of the Coulomb stress change are relatively higher (>2 bar) near the edges (both downward and lateral) of the fault, and diminish slightly upward and downward. The equivalents are negative in the zone immediately below and above the fault, exhibiting a "T" shape of low stress zone in the vertical profile of the fault. This study demonstrates the possible ranges and directions the aftershock energy would propagates after a reverse faulting.

A variety of informations obtained from satellite image, digital elevation relief map (DEM), borehole logging, televiewer, geophysical prospecting, etc were synthetically analyzed to investigate subsurface geological and structural characteristics and to evaluate geohazard pertinent to fault-damage in the Busan metropolitan city. It is revealed that the geology is composed of the Cretaceous andesitic$\sim$dacitic volcanics, gabbro, and granitoid and that at least three major faults including the Dongrae fault are developed in the study area. Based on characteristics of topography, fault-fractured zone, and isobath maps of the Quaternary sediments and weathered residuals of the basement, the Dongrae fault is decreased in its width and fracturing intensity of damaged zone from south toward north, and the fault is segmented around the area between the Seomyeon and Yangieong junctions. Meanwhile, we drew a geohazard sectional map using the five major parameters that significantly suggest damage intensity of basement by fault, i.e. distance from fault core, TCR, RQD, uniaxial rock strength, and seismic velocity of S wave. The map is evaluated as a suitable method to express the geological and structural characteristics and fault-damaged intensity of basement in the study area. It is, thus, concluded that the proposed method can contribute to complement and amplify the capability of the present evaluation system of rock mass.
The geologic structure of the Yongil Bay was studied in detail based on high resolution seismic profiles. The seafloor trends NE to SW with a deeper part off the Kuryong Peninsula. The seafloor is rather smooth due to the Quaternary fluvial deposits in the lower part and muddy sediments in the upper part. The seafloor off Umockri is very irregular due to erosion where Tertiary sedimentary rocks crop out. The underlying basement rocks were strongly deformed with faults and folds. High-angled reverse faults mostly trend N-S and NNW-SSE and are indicative of westward thrusting. Normal faults in NW-SE and WNW-ESE directions occur locally. Large folding structures trend NE-SW nearshore area of Umockri. The geologic structure suggests that the bay was subject to compressional stress regimes trending E-W and/or NW-SE prior to the early Late Miocene.
High-resolution images are drawn from existing seismic data which were originally obtained by Korea Ocean Research & Development Institute (KORDI) during 1994-1997 for deep seismic studies on the East Sea of Korea. These images are analyzed for mapping Quaternary faults and near-bottom gas pockets. First 12 channels are selected from shot gathers for reprocessing. The processing sequence adopted for high-resolution seismic images comprises data copy, trace editing, true amplitude recovery, common-midpoint sorting, initial muting, prestack deconvolution, bandpass filtering, stacking, highpass filtering, poststack deconvolution, f-x migration, and automatic gain control (AGC). Among these processing steps, predictive deconvolution, highpass filtering, and short window AGC are the most significant in enhancement of resolution. More than 200 Quaternanry faults are interpreted on the migrated sections in the shallow depths beneath the seafloor. Although numerous faults are found mostly at the western continental slope and boundaries of the Ulleung Basin, significant amount of the faults are also indicated within the basin. Many of these faults are believed to be formed with reactivation of basement, from geotectonic activities including volcanism, and often originated in Tertiary, indicating that the tectonic regime of the East Sea might be unstable. Existence of shallow gas pockets casts real hazardous warnings to deep-sea drillings and/or to underwater constructions such as inter-island cables and gas pipelines. On the other hand, discovery of these gas pockets heightens the interests in developing natural resources in the East Sea. Reprocessed seismic sections, however, show no typical seismic characteristics for gas hydrates such as bottom-simulating reflectors in the western continental slope and ocean floor.
This study shows possibility of active fault, throughout analyzing distributional features of tectonic and fluvial geomorphology and mineral composition of fault fracture clay, at Jinbu fault-line system in Pyeongchang-gun, Gangwon Province. Fault-line valley was formed remarkably in the upper reaches of Odae River and upper reaches of Yeongok River according along Jinbu fault-line. Landforms show rectilineal distribution at right shore slopes of Odae River in Ganpyeong-ri, southern zone of Jinbu fault-line system, related to the tectonic processes, such as triangular facet, kernbut, kerncol and alluvial fan. Fault fracture clay zones were developed at 5 outcrops($jbf1{\sim}5$), located in kerncol. Particularly, jbf1 fault outcrop, developed at granite saprolite, has obvious fault plane and fault clay composed of illite and laumontite. The Jinbu Fault-line along jbf4-2-3-5 may be formed by regional compressive stress, and jbf1 fault may be suggested a tributary fault of the Jinbu fault-line formed before the late Pleistocene. The vertical displacement of the east and west blocks of the Jinbu Fault-line is estimated in $0.024{\sim}0.027m/ka$.
We investigated the distribution and geomorphic development of alluvial fans at Cheongdo- and Hweyang-eup(town) in the Cheongdo Basin, Gyeongsangbuk-do(Province) of Korea. The alluvial fans of study area are formed confluently to the E-W direction at the northern slope of the Mt. Namsan(840 m). They are classified into Higher surface, Middle surface, and Lower surface according to a relative height to a river bed. And the older alluvial fan is, the deeper gravel in the stream deposits is weathered. The magnitude of each surface composing of confluent fans is related to that of the drainage basin. So called fan-basin system of magnitude on the study area is on the positive(+) relation in the study area. The large fans over 1km in radius are found on the basin of andesite rock which is resistant to the weathering and erosion. Moreover there is no tectonic movement in the basin. It means the most important element influenced on the fan formation is not tectonic movement, but the Quaternary climatic change, which is the periglacial climate alternating glacial and interglacial stages during the Quaternary. Therefore alluvial fans would distribute in Korea overall influenced by the Quaternary climatic change.
