Although the evaluation of the mechanical properties and behavior of jointed rock masses is very important for the design of tunnel and underground openings, it has always been considered the most difficult problem. One of the difficulties in describing the rock mass behavior is the selection of the appropriate constitutive model. This limitation may be overcome with the progress in discrete element software such as PFC, which does not need the user to prescribe a constitutive model for rock mass. In this paper, a 30\;m\;\times\;30\;m\;\times\;30\;m m jointed rock mass of road tunnel site was analyzed. h discrete fracture network was developed from the joint geometry obtained from core logging and surface survey. Using the discontinuities geometry from the DFN model, PFC simulations were carried out, starting with the intact rock and systematically adding the joints and the stress-strain response was recorded for each case. With the stress-strain response curves, the mechanical properties of jointed rock masses were determined. As expected, the presence of joints had a pronounced effect on mechanical properties of the rock mass. More importantly, getting the mechanical response of the PFC model doesn't require a user specified constitutive model.
In analysis of slope stability, deterministic analysis which yields a factor of safety has been used until recently. However, probability of failure is considered as a more efficient method because it deals with the uncertainty and variability of rock mass. In both methods, a factor of safety or a probability of failure is calculated for a slope although characteristics of rock mass, such as characteristics of joints, weathering degree of rock and so on, are not uniform throughout the slope. In this paper, we divided a model slope into several zones depending on conditions of rock mass and joints, and probabilities of failure in each zone are calculated and compared with that calculated in whole slope. The persistence of joint was also used as a parameter in calculation of probability of failure. A rock slope located in Hongcheon, Gangwondo was selected and the probability of failure using zoning and persistence as parameter was calculated to confirm the applicability of model analysis.

Basic to acidic dykes and systematic joints are observed pervasively in the Jukbyeon-Bugu area, Uljin, east Korea. In order to classify the dykes and joints and to determine the relative chronology, their geometries, kinematics, and cross-cutting relationships, and the petrography and geochemistry of dykes are synthetically analyzed. Based on the orientations and cross-cutting relationships of 144 dykes (137 basic and 7 acidic dykes) and 370 systematic joints, three basic dike swarms (M-10, M-80, and M-100), one acidic dyke group (AD), and four joint sets (J-10, J-40, J-80, and J-150) are classified. Some of the J-150 joints reactivated as dextral strike-slip fault are recognized in the field and named as F-340R. According to petrographic, geochemical, and occurrence features in the field, M-80 and M-100 dykes have originated from a co-magma and intruded under the same stress field, even though they have intruded through different passages, preexisting fractures and new fractures created by magmatic pressure, respectively. And the relative chronology of dyke swarms and joint sets in the study area is determined as follows : ${\rightarrow}$${\rightarrow}$${\rightarrow}$${\rightarrow}$${\rightarrow}$. And the M-80 (M-100) and M-10 dyke swarms intruded under NNE-SSW and NW-SE trending horizontal minimum stress fields, respectively. According to a synthesis of the results of the previous and this studies, the M-80, M-10, and F-340R are interpreted to have been formed about 64-52 Ma, Eocene~Oligocene, and Miocene, respectively.
In relation to slope stability analysis, geologic characteristics and engineering properties of the discontinuities in three slopes selected are compared and analyzed by both square-inventory method and scanline survey. The aim of the study is in evaluating which method is applied better in slope stability analysis by comparing results of the two methods with those of direct observation on outcrop of slope failures generated. In each slope, results of comparative analysis among geologic and engineering properties are analyzed similarly one another. However, results of orientation analysis in slope 2 are different each other, which indicates orientation of joints in slope 2 depends on persistency and frequency of each joint and also indicates appearance of new joint set with different orientation. Probability density distribution and spacing in slope 3 are high in comparison to those in slope 2 and 3. The reasons are that distribution of psammitic rocks and development of minor folds in slope 3 unlike slope 2 and 3 are closely associated with development of joints. The research data indicate that the square-inventory method predicts more precise failure aspects and is more effective way than scanline survey in analyzing slope stability of the study area.

Intake of groundwater by tunneling in a mountainous area mostly results from groundwater flow through fractured parts of total rock mass. For reasonable analysis of this phenomenon the representative joint groups 1, 2, and 3 have been selected by previous investigations, geological/geophysical field tests and boring works. Three dimensional fractures were generated by the FracMan and MAFIC which is a three dimensional finite element model has been used to analyse a groundwater flow through fractured media. Monte Carlo simulation was applied to reduce the uncertainty of this study. The numerical results showed that the average and deviation of amounts of groundwater intaked into tunnel per unit length were $5.40{\times}10^{-1}$ and $3.04{\times}10^{-1}m^3/min/km$. It is concluded that tunnel would be stable on impact of groundwater environment by tunneling because of the lower value than $2.00{\sim}3.00m^3/min/km$ as previous and present standard on the application of tunnel construction.
A workflow is presented to estimate the size of a representative elementary volume and 3-D hydraulic conductivity tensor based on fluid flow analysis for a discrete fracture network (DFN). A case study is considered for a Cretaceous granitic rock mass at Gijang in Busan, Korea. The intensity and size of joints were calibrated using the first invariant of the fracture tensor for the 2-D DFN of the study area. Effective hydraulic apertures were obtained by analyzing the results of field packer tests. The representative elementary volume of the 2-D DFN was determined to be 20 m square by investigating the variations in the directional hydraulic conductivity for blocks of different sizes. The directional hydraulic conductivities calculated from the 2-D DFN exhibited strong anisotropy related to the hydraulic behavior of the study area. The 3-D hydraulic conductivity tensor for the fractured rock mass of the study area was estimated from the directional block conductivities of the 2-D DFN blocks generated for various directions in 3-D. The orientations of the principal components of the 3-D hydraulic conductivity tensor were found to be identical to those of delineated joint sets in the study area.
We have studied orientational characteristics of microcracks in Mesozoic granites and granitic dyke rocks from Seokmo-do, Ganghwa-gun. Microcracks on horizontal surfaces of rock samples from 14 sites were investigated by image processing. Orientations of these microcracks compared with those of 18 sets of joints in Mesozoic granites from Seokmo-do. From the related chart, microcrack sets show strong preferred orientations which obviously are coincident with the direction of vertical common joints. It follows that the formation of macroscopic joints may be the results of further growth and step-wise jointing of pre-existing microcracks. Orientations of microcracks from this result also compared with those of vertical rift and grain planes for Jurassic and Cretaceous granite quarries in Korea. As shown in the distribution chart, the congruence of distribution pattern among microcracks and rift and grain planes suggests that similar microcrack systems probably occur regionally in Jurassic and Cretaceous granites from Korea. In particular, whole domain of the distribution chart was divided into 16 groups in terms of the phases of distribution of microcracks and planes. These microcrack sets in each domains construct complex composite microcrack systems which have formed progressively by different geologic processes and under varying conditions.
In bench blasting, rock fragmentation is one of the most important factors determining productivity. Rock fragmentation could be affected by various conditions and these were hewn that rock joint conditions and in-situ block sizes were the biggest effect on it. This research is focused on what or how to influence on rock fragmentation according to relation between blasting conditions and the in-situ rock conditions such as rock joint conditions and in-situ block size. Field measurements were carried out in 3 open pit limestone mines, where in-situ rock conditions and blasting conditions were fully investigated. The results show that the parameters interact with blasting conditions complicatedly and especially in-situ block size has bigger effects. Dip direction of major joint set also can affect on fragmentation. Mean fragment size become smallest when dip direction of major joint set is about $30^{\circ}$ with the bench direction. The reason is considered to be come from difference of propagation paths of elastic wave.
The influence of the mined-out caves on the stability of the high speed railway tunnel was investigated with a series of geological logging and in-situ tests on the one hand, and with the rock mass classification using the multiple regression analysis on the other hand. The rock mass in this area can be classified as 'fair', and the condition of the discontinuities plays the most important role in the classification of the rock mass. The results of the analysis obtained by the FLAC showed that the western part of the tunnel locating at 50m above the mine cavities could be affected by subsidence associated with a considerable deformation, the magnitude of which might depend on the properties of the rock mass.
This study investigated the growth pattern and species composition by landform and seaside distribution to evaluate the basic community structure and topographical distribution of the Peucedanum japonicum Thunb. community group in Korea. The appearing plants with the Peucedanum japonicum Thunb. were a total 170 taxa belonging to 130 genera and to 57 families, and the species number by families was the most in Compositae of 30 taxa. The frequency of appearing plants was the highest in the Aster spathulifolius Max.(54.1%), and the east and west seasides were the highest in the Aster spathulifolius Max. and south seaside was the highest in the Miscanthus sinensis Ander.. The ratio of common plants among seasides was the highest between the west and south seasides of 35.6% with 47 taxa. The distribution landforms of the Peucedanum japonicum Thunb. was a $17.4^{\circ}$ slope of the unevenness landform, vertical joint, horizontal joint, blockfield, planation surfaces and the rocky seaside of the sea cliff. The distribution among landforms was the greatest in the rocky seaside of the 61 regions. The sociability on growing pattern was the highest in the 3 sociability rank of 54.6% with the 83 region.
