  • Curved beams are increasingly used in buildings, vehicles, ships, and aircraft, which has resulted in considerable effort being directed toward developing an accurate method for analyzing the dynamic behavior of such structures. The stability behavior of elastic circular arches has been the subject of a large number of investigations. One of the efficient procedures for the solution of ordinary differential equations or partial differential equations is the differential quadrature method DQM. This method has been applied to a large number of cases to overcome the difficulties of the complex computer algorithms, as well as excessive use of storage due to conditions of non-linear geometries, loadings, or material properties. This study uses DQM to analyze the in-plane vibration of the circular arches considering the effects of midsurface extension and rotatory inertia. Fundamental frequency parameters are calculated for the member with various parameter ratios, boundary conditions, and opening angles. The solutions from DQM are compared with exact solutions or other numerical solutions for cases in which they are available and given to analyze the effects of midsurface extension and rotatory inertia on the frequency parameters of the circular arches.

  • We propose a method for deriving the relationship between channel width and discharge from remote sensing products. Stream widths at points distributed along a river network can be measured from high-resolution remote imagery. Further, corresponding drainage area for these points can be calculated using digital elevation models, making it possible to construct width-drainage area relation. On the other hand, the relationship between the flow discharge and the drainage area is obtained from historical data measured at ground stations. By coupling these two relationships, we can finally derive the width-discharge relationship which comprises an important component of downstream hydraulic geometry. The proposed method was tested for the Nakdong River and the Seomjin River, successfully capturing power-law exponents in the width-discharge relationships reported in earlier studies. The proposed approach can serve as an alternative for obtaining the hydraulic geometry relationship under the limits of ground data.

  • The horseshoe prior is notably one of the most popular priors in sparse regression models, where only a small fraction of coefficients are nonzero. The parameter space of the horseshoe prior is much smaller than that of the spike and slab prior, so it enables us to efficiently explore the parameter space even in high-dimensions. However, on the other hand, the horseshoe prior has a high computational cost for each iteration in the Gibbs sampler. To overcome this issue, various MCMC algorithms for the horseshoe prior have been proposed to reduce the computational burden. Especially, Johndrow et al. (2020) recently proposes an approximate algorithm that can significantly improve the mixing and speed of the MCMC algorithm. In this paper, we compare (1) the traditional MCMC algorithm, (2) the approximate MCMC algorithm proposed by Johndrow et al. (2020) and (3) its variant in terms of computing times, estimation and variable selection performance. For the variable selection, we adopt the sequential clustering-based method suggested by Li and Pati (2017). Practical performances of the MCMC methods are demonstrated via numerical studies.

  • We examine berth allocation problems in tidal bulk ports with an objective of minimizing the demurrage and dispatch associated berthing cost. In the proposed optimization model inventory (or stock) level constraints are considered so as to satisfy the service level requirements in bulk terminals. It is shown that the mathematical programming formulation of this research provides improved schedule resolution and solution accuracy. We also show that the conventional big-M method of standard resource allocation models can be exempted in tidal bulk ports, and thus the computational efficiency can be significantly improved.

  • Adaptive mesh refinement(AMR) is one of the popular computational simulation techniques used in various scientific and engineering fields. Although AMR data is organized in a hierarchical multi-resolution data structure, traditional volume visualization algorithms such as ray-casting and splatting cannot handle the form without converting it to a sophisticated data structure. In this paper, we present a hierarchical multi-resolution splatting technique using k-d trees and octrees for AMR data that is suitable for implementation on the latest consumer PC graphics hardware. We describe a graphical user interface to set transfer function and viewing / rendering parameters interactively. Experimental results obtained on a general purpose PC equipped with an nVIDIA GeForce3 card are presented to demonstrate that the proposed techniques can interactively render AMR data(over 20 frames per second). Our scheme can easily be applied to parallel rendering of time-varying AMR data.

  • In this study, a model was developed for estimating deliverability considering the pressure dependent permeability and predicting production profile with Material Balance Equation(MBE) for Coalbed Methane(CBM) fields. The estimated deliverability was compared with the conventional deliverability based on CBM well testing data with coefficient of determination($R^2$). As a result, the former was 0.76 and the latter was 0.69. It was confirmed that the deliverability which consider the pressure dependent permeability is more adoptable when representing the productivity of CBM fields. Through this process, in order to calculate pressure dependent permeability when well testing data exist, a method to infer reservoir pressure within the radius of investigation was proposed. The production profile of 31 gas wells was predicted for 15 years, using the estimated deliverability and the MBE. After that, the results was compared with simulation results of the literature. The simulation results did not account the pressure dependent permeability and the developed model results considered that. As the applied field permeability rised 1.17 times, field production rate was increased approximately 15% than the literature results. According to other researches, the permeability of CBM fields can be rise 6 ~ 25 times. For these cases, the production profiles may have significant difference with conventional gas fields.

  • In the vibration analysis or submerged of floating bodies such as ship and offshore structures, the coupled system between structure and fluid satisfying the compatibility conditions on the wetted surface should be considered. It is well known that the hydroelastic analysis of structural vibration in contact with fluid can be solved by applying the finite element method to structure and the boundary element method to fluid domain. However such an approach is impractical, because fluid added mass matrix is fully coupled on whole wetted surface. To overcome this shortcoming, an efficient approach based on reanalysis scheme is proposed in this paper. The proposed method can be applied for cases with higher modes lacking 3-D reduction factor J as well as beam-like modes of marine structures. It is well known the traditional method using 2-D added mass and J-factor is good only for beam-like modes with reliable J values. The validity and the calculation efficiency of the proposed method are proved with numerical examples.

The stability behavior of elastic curved beams has been the subject of a large number of investigations. Solutions of the relevant differential equations have been obtained traditionally using standard finite difference or finite element methods. These techniques require a great deal of computer time as the number of discrete nodes becomes relatively large under the conditions of complex geometry and loading. The in-plane buckling of curved beams considering the extensibility of the arch axis was analyzed under uniformly distributed radial loads using the DQM. The critical loads were calculated for the member with various parameter ratios, boundary conditions, and opening angles. The results were compared with the precise results by other methods for cases, in which they were available. The DQM, using only a limited number of grid points, provided results that agreed very well (less than 0.3%) with the exact ones. New results according to diverse variations were obtained, showing the important roles in the buckling behavior of curved beams, and can be used in comparisons with other numerical solutions or with experimental test data.
