  • Fully developed turbulent flow in a square duct is numerically predicted with two nonlinear low-Reynolds-number ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ models. Typical predicted quantities such as axial and secondary velocities, turbulent kinetic energy and Reynolds stresses are compared in detail with each other. It is found that the nonlinear low-Reynolds-number ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model adopted in a commercial code is unable to predict accurately duct flows involving turbulence-driven secondary motion with the prediction level of secondary flows one order less than that of the experiment.

  • Turbulent flow and heat transfer characteristics around staggered tube bundles were studied using a non-orthogonal boundary fitted coordinate system and the low Reynolds .kappa. - .epsilon. turbulence model suggested by Lam and Bremhorst. The predicted flow characteristics for two tube pitches and tube arrangement showed good agreement with the experimental data except the strongly curved region. The predicted Nusselt number was compared with measurements obtained in the staggered rough bundles and it revealed the similar trend to measurements, but the location of the maximum and minimum heat transfer differed somewhat from the measurements.

  • In this study, an efficient ornithopter aerodynamic model, which is applicable to ornithopter wing design considering fluid-structure interaction or ornithopter flight dynamics and control simulation, was proposed and experimentally validated through the wind tunnel experiments. Due to the ornithopter aerodynamics governed by unsteady low Reynolds number flow, an experimental device was specially designed and developed. A part of the experimental device, 2-axis loadcell, was situated in the non-inertial frame; the dynamic calibration method was established to compensate the inertial load for pure aerodynamic load measurements. The characteristics of proposed aerodynamic model were compared with the experimental data in terms of mean and root-mean-square values of lift and drag coefficients with respect to the flow speed, flapping frequency, and fixed angle of attack.

  • Numerical calculations are carried out in order to evaluate the performance of low-Re Reynolds stress model based on SSG model for a swirling turbulent flow in a pipe. The results are compared with those of $\kappa-\epsilon$ model and GL model, and the experimental data. The finite volume method is used for the discretization, and the power-law scheme is employed as a numerical scheme. The SIMPLE algorithm is used for velocity-Pressure correction in the governing equations.

  • Aerodynamic characteristics over Micro Aerial Vehicle(MAV) in low Reynolds number regime are numerically studied using 3-D unsteady, incompressible Navier-Stokes flow solver with single partitioning method for multi-block grid. For more efficient computation of unsteady flows, this flow solver is parallel-implemented with MPl(Message Passing Interface) programming method. Firstly, MAV wing with not complex geometry is considered and then, we analyze aerodynamic characteristics over full MAV configuration varying the angle of attack. Present computational results show a better agreement with the experimental data by MACDL(Micro Aerodynamic Control and Design Lab.), Seoul National University. We can also find the conceptually designed MAV by MACDL has the static stability.

  • Low Reynolds number second moment turbulence model which be applicable to the fine gird near the wall region was developed. In this model, turbulence model coefficients in the pressure strain model of the Reynolds stress equation was expressed as functions of turbulence Reynolds number $R_{t}\equivk^{2}/(\nu\varepsilon)).$ In the derivation procedure of the present low Reynolds number algebraic stress model, Laufer's near wall experimental data on Reynolds stresses were curve fitted as functions of R$_{t}$ and the resulting simultaneous equations of the model coefficients were solved by using the boundary conditions at wall and high Reynolds number limiting conditions. Predicted Reynolds stresses and dissipation rate of turbulent kinetic energy etc. in the 2 dimensional parallel, plane channel flow and pipe flow were compared with the preditions obtained by employing the Launder-Shima model, standard algebraic stress model and several experimental data. Results show that all the Reynolds stresses and dissipation rate of turbulent kinetic energy predicted by the present low Reynolds number algebraic stress model agree better with the experimental data than those predicted by other algebraic stress models.

  • In this study, flow of a model intake port/valve system is analyzed by using low Reynolds number $k-{\varepsilon}$ model. Discharge coefficient was obtained from computational results for the various cases of valve lifts. Discharge coefficient becomes maximum when the valve lift is 20mm, and does not increase or decrease in proportional to valve lift. Most of pressure drop and production of turbulent kinetic energy occur at the edge points of the valve and the valve seat Thus, in order to improve discharge coefficient, rounding of edge points in valve and valve seat is recommended. As valve lift is increased, the velocity of the intake jet in the valve passage decreases, and the direction of the jet is more inclined toward the valve seat.

  • A multiple production .epsilon. equation model was developed in the low Reynolds number $\kappa$-$\varepsilon$ model with the aids of DNS data. We derived the model theoretically and avoided the use of empirical correlations as much as possible in order for the model to have generality in the prediction of complex turbulent flow. Unavoidable model constants were, however, optimized with the aids of DNS data. All the production and dissipation models in the $\varepsilon$ equation were modified with damping functions to satisfy the wall limiting behavior. A new $f_{\mu}$ function, turbulent diffusion and pressure diffusion model for the k and .epsilon. equations were also proposed to satisfy the wall limiting behavior. By, computational investigation on the plane channel flows, we found that the multiple production model for .epsilon. equation could improve the near wall turbulence behavior compared with the standard production model without the complicated empirical modification. Satisfication of the wall limiting conditions for each turbulence model term was found to be most important for the accurate prediction of near wall turbulence behaviors.

  • A modified low-Reynolds-number Reynolds stress model is developed for the calculation of drag-reducing turbulent flows induced by polymer injection. The results without polymer injection are compared with the results of direct numerical simulation to ensure the validity of the basic model. In case of drag reduction, profiles of mean velocity and Reynolds stress components, in two-dimensional channel flow, obtained with a proper value of viscosity ratio are presented and discussed. Computed mean velocity profile is in very good agreement with experimental data. And, the qualitative behavior of Reynolds stress components with the viscosity ratio is also reasonable.

  • A numerical and experimental flow visualization study of the louvered fin array, commonly used in a compact heat exchanger was performed. The flow structure which was obtained by using a finite difference method, was compared with an experimental result. The experimental flow visualization was performed by using a dye injection technique with 13:1 scale model. The effects of Reynolds number and fin geometries on flow structure and heat transfer were examined.
