  • Non-destructive freshness measurement using spectroscopy has been carried out several times, but research on freshness and freshness has not been conducted. Therefore the purpose of this study is to develop a system for visually measuring and quantifying the air sack inside the egg by non - destructive method. The experimental environment which designed a small chamber was composed of 850nm band of two IR lasers, IR camera and two servo motors to acquire air sack Images. When the air sack volume ratio is 2.9% or less and the density is 0.9800 or more, the Haugh Unit value is 60 or more It was judged to be a fresh egg of a grade B or higher. These results mean, using the weight measurement, nondestructive decision system, and freshness evaluating algorithm. It can be expected to distinguish grade B or more marketable eggs without using destructive methods.

  • This study presents a new method of estimating the size distribution of river bed gravel through image processing. The analysis was done in two steps; first the individual grain images were analyzed and then the grain particle segmentation of river-bed images were processed. In the first part of the analysis, the relationships (long axes, intermediate axes and projective areas) between grain features from images and those measured were compared. For this analysis, 240 gravel particles were collected at three river stations. All particles were measured with vernier calipers and weighed with scales. The measured data showed that river gravel had shape factors of 0.514~0.585. It was found that the weight of gravel had a stronger correlation with the projective areas than the long or intermediate axes. Using these results, we were able to establish an area-weight formula. In the second step, we calculated the projective areas of the river-bed gravels by detecting their edge lines using the ImageJ program. The projective areas of the gravels were converted to the grain-size distribution using the formula previously established. The proposed method was applied to 3 small- and medium- sized rivers in Korea. Comparisons of the analyzed size distributions with those measured showed that the proposed method could estimate the median diameter within a fair error range. However, the estimated distributions showed a slight deviation from the observed value, which is something that needs improvement in the future.

  • Domestic LPG meters are being tested for LPG quantification in accordance with the "Measures Act". The LPG meter is re-tested every three years in accordance with the "Enforcement Decree of the Measures Act". The maximum permissible error within the test is within ${\pm}1.0%$, and the tolerance is within ${\pm}1.5%$. For the quantitative measurement of LPG, a hydrometer for LPG, a balance, and a pressure vessel are used. The volume of LPG varies in depending on the temperature and pressure. The current quantitative measurement method of LPG requires the measurement of temperature, pressure and density in order to determine the volume of LPG, respectively, and some equipments are needed accordingly. Coriolis mass flowmeter, on the other hand, measure the mass flow, density and temperature at the same time, and can be converted and calculated to the required values using a computer program, also it is widely applied in the industrial field. In this study, the volume of LPG was measured using a Coriolis mass flowmeter as a basic study of LPG quantitative measurement. In addition, it is shown that it is possible to apply for the LPG quantitative measurement using the Coriolis mass flowmeter by comparing it with the conventional LPG quantitative measurement method.

  • With the recent advent of IoT technology, automatic pet feeders are being distributed so that owners can feed their companion animals while they are out. However, due to behaviors of pets, the method of measuring weight, which is important in automatic feeding, can be easily damaged and broken when using the scale. The 3D camera method has disadvantages due to its cost, and the 2D camera method has relatively poor accuracy when compared to 3D camera method. Hence, the purpose of this study is to propose a deep learning approach that can accurately estimate weight while simply using a 2D camera. For this, various convolutional neural networks were used, and among them, the ResNet101-based model showed the best performance: an average absolute error of 3.06 grams and an average absolute ratio error of 3.40%, which could be used commercially in terms of technical and financial viability. The result of this study can be useful for the practitioners to predict the weight of a standardized object such as feed only through an easy 2D image.

  • Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous materials with nano-sized pores. The degree of gas adsorption and pore size can be controlled according to types of metal ions and organic ligands. Many studies have been conducted on MOFs in the fields of gas storage and separation, and gas sensors. For rapid and quantitative gas adsorption/desorption analyses, it is necessary to form various MOF structures in uniform films on a sensor surface. In this review, some of representative direct methods for uniformly synthesizing MOFs such as MIL-53 (Al), ZIF-8, and Cu-BDC from anodized aluminum oxide, zinc oxide nanorods, and copper thin films, respectively on the surface of a microresonator are highlighted. In addition, the operation principle of quartz crystal microbalance and microcantilever, which are representative microresonators, and the interpretation of signals that change when gas is adsorbed to MOFs are covered. This is intended to enhance the understanding of gas adsorption/desorption analysis of MOFs using microresonators.

  • The Korean Industrial Standards (KS F) have a various regulations for measuring the weight of dried soil and rock. However, if the dried weight is measured in air after drying at 110±5℃ or 105±5℃, a weight singularity occurs, in which the weight decreases and then increases as the measurement time continues. In this study, basaltic rock from Ulleung Island was oven dried at 40 to 110℃. The weight was measured on an electronic scale with a sensitivity of 0.0001g (0.1mg) to find weight singularities. A method to easily determine the dry weight using the weight singularities was presented. As a result of analyses of the singularity of rock specimen according to temperature, the singularities were appeared in the temperature range of 40 to 110℃, and the weight of the singularity was smaller as the heating temperature increased. In particular, the weight singularity duration appeared, and the duration of the singularity was shorter as the heating temperature increased. The results of the convection measurement experiment showed that the cause of the singularity is the convection phenomenon caused by the contact of the heated rock with the air. The weight decrease of oven dried rock occurs when the effect of convection is dominant over the effect of air moisture absorption. Conversely, the weight increase of rock occurs when the effect of air moisture absorption is dominant over the effect of convection.

  • The medium-large cladoceran species Simocephalus spp. predominantly occur in habitats with developed aquatic vegetation. Accordingly, due to Simocephalus' high contribution to zooplankton community biomass in the lake's littoral zone and wetland habitats, estimating their biomass is important to understand the matter cycling based on biological interactions within the aquatic food web. In this study, we reviewed the length-weight regression equations used previously to estimate Simocephalus biomass, directly measured S. serrulatus' body specification (length, width and area) and their biomass(dry weight) using instruments such as a microscopic digital camera and a microscale, and performed regression analysis between each other. When S. serrulatus biomass was estimated using the equation (Kawabata and Urabe, 1998) presented in 『Biomonitoring Survey and Assessment Manual』, Korea, errors between estimates and measures were relatively large compared to the S. serrulatus species-specific biomass estimate equation developed by Lemke and Benke (2003). In addition, both equations showed not only increasing trends in error (estimate-measure) with increasing S. serrulatus' body length, but also in error variance among similar-sized individuals. The results of regression analysis with dry weight by body specifications indicated that the most appropriate equation for estimating the biomass of S. serrulatus was derived from the width-dry weight exponential regression equation (R2=0.9555). The review and development study of such species-specific biomass estimation equations for zooplankton can be used as a tool to understand their role and function in aquatic ecosystem food webs.

  • Science career education is for every student as well as for students who want to become scientists. In this study, we developed and applied science career education materials using TV programs which showed successful application of science in industry and business. The effects of the programs were surveyed mainly by questionnaire on 'Science Career Orientation', which have four categories.Video materials using TV programs were effective in changing science career orientation (p<0.05) of junior high school students, but only when the teacher added some cognitive explanation on the scientific concept involved. Providing only video materials were not enough to make meaningful change on science career orientation. The results implied science career education should be linked with science teaching and learning. It also showed the possibility and the way of using informal education like TV program in science career education.

  • The pertinent Korean Industrial Standard (KS F) requires that rocks dried at 105 ± 5℃ be taken out of the oven into air and weighed on a scale. However, when rocks are exposed to air after the drying process, they absorb moisture, meaning that their weight will increase. In this study, eight cubic samples of Hwangdeung granite of different sizes were used to measure and compare the dry weight. The dry singularity weight measured in air was smaller than that measured in the drying oven. The difference in dry weight showed a positive correlation with sample size. Conversely, the difference in dry weight per unit weight of rock showed a negative correlation with sample size. The weight of a rock sample exposed to air is determined by the magnitude of the influence of convection currents occurring around the heated rock and the influence of moisture absorption in air. A singularity occurs when the magnitudes of these two effects are equal. The larger the rock sample, the longer the time taken for the singularity to occur, the greater the weight loss of the sample, and the longer the time taken for the sample to return to the initially measured weight on account of the greater moisture absorption for larger samples than smaller samples. In the future, research into the singularity and dry weights measured inside the drying oven will help to identify and address the limitations of the current KS F testing regulations.
