  • The spontaneous frequency of genetic damage and the possible relationship of this damage to dietary and nutritional variables were investigated in peripheral blood lymphocytes from 45 elderly people using sister chromatid exchange (SCE). The relationship of dietary and nutritional factors on SCE was assessed by different degrees of smoking status such as smokers (n=14), ex-smokers (n=16) and non-smokers (n=15). Significant relationship of the SCE frequency to nutrient intake of the combined subjects (n=45) was found. When cigarette smoking status was taken into account, there were negative linear relationships between SCE and fat, phosphorus or vitamin A intakes of the non-smokers as well as SCE and the dietary quality scores. There was a positive linear relationship between SCE and food frequency of meat and fish among the smokers. Use of artificial sweetners in ex-smokers of the elderly people produced a significant increase of SCE in comparison with the mean SCE for those not using sweetners. Other dietary parameters, including intake of coffee, green tea and ginseng tea, alcohol consumption, use of processed foods, and administration of vitamin pills did not show any correlation with SCE. These results suggested that dietary fat, phosphorus or vitamin A status are the major determinants of spontaneous DNA damage in lymphocytes of the elderly people.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the smoking-related characteristics of health and non-health related majors and the relationship between the smoking dependence and oral health practice of college students. The subjects in this study were the college students who were selected by convenience sampling from four different universities in the city of Jeonju, North Jeolla Province. The answer sheets from 811 respondents were analyzed. The findings of the study were as follows: The rate of the smoker students whose major was related to health stood at 20.6 percent, and that of the smoker students whose major was not related to health stood at 29.4%. There were significant differences according to the track of their major (p<0.05). As for links between smoking dependence and a plan to quit smoking, 32.7% of the health-related majors who considered themselves to depend on smoking replied they would give up smoking if there would be a rise in cigarette price (p<0.005), and 37% of the nonhealth related majors who considered themselves to depend on smoking gave the same answer. Thus, the largest group of the students intended to quit smoking if there would be a rise in cigarette price, and there were statistically significant differences according to smoking dependence (p<0.05). Concerning connections between smoking dependence and actual oral health practice, the non-health related majors who didn't consider themselves to depend on smoking got 3.53 in the item whether they brushed their teeth twice or more a day (p<0.05). In conclusion, the development and implementation of systematic programs that are to teach students to stay away from or quit smoking and take care of their oral health regardless of their major are required to step up the oral health promotion of college students.

  • Institutional Repository offers integrated capture, management. preservation and access intellectual asset of individual institution and is also considered as a strategy to disseminate and exchange intellectual output as part of global 'Knowledge Bank'. A case of Institutional Repository, 'dCollection,' was introduced in Korea Education & Research Information Service(KERIS) as an institutional repository solution. This paper drew related issues in order to apply institutional repository to domestic universities. The results will bring a paradigm shift in scholarly communications, as a guideline of institutional repositories in the university libraries.

  • The purpose of this study is to provide basic data for resolving individual and regional health inequalities by identifying factors that affect healthy living practices, and to protect the access to health equity and the access to health equity and the people's right to health. Raw data from the 2019 Community Health Survey were used, and descriptive statistical analysis and multivariate logistic regression analysis were performed using SAS 9.4 and IBM SPSS ver. 21. The healthy living practice rate was 33.8% overall, and there was a difference of 11~20% by region. In terms of individual factors, healthy living practices were significantly different in gender, age, occupation, sleep time, subjective health status, and subjective stress level. In the interpersonal factor, there was a difference in social activity for healthy living practice, and in the community factor, positive attitude toward the local physical environment, annual unsatisfied medical care, and use of health institutions were significant. In order to increase the practice of healthy living by region based on the research results, comprehensive policies and cooperative measures that can be approached at the individual, social and national level should be implemented along with specific strategies.

  • The purpose of this study was to understand the degree of early recognition of myocardial infarction in adult smokers and to analyze factors related to cognition. In a descriptive survey using raw data from the 2021 Community Health Survey, 210,899 out of 229,942 people who completed the survey, excluding 18,343 subjects with insufficient responses, were selected as study subjects. Age, marital status, education level, smoking cessation plan, health examination_cancer examination, diabetes diagnosis, subjective health level, and social physical environment were significantly related to early symptoms of myocardial infarction. Based on the results of the study, active promotion and education for high-risk groups with a high risk of developing myocardial infarction are needed.

  • This descriptive study was conducted to examine self rated health and factors influencing self rated health among e-cigarette smoking young and elderly community residents. The data were from the community health survey 2019 and the subjectis were 2,607 participants aged 19-50 years. Data analysis was conducted by descriptive statistics, χ2 test, univariate multinominal logistic regression using SPSS 26.0 program and SPSS complex samples statistics. As a result of the study, 90.2% of the young and old e-cigarette smokers had a good subjective health condition and 9.8% had a poor subjective health condition. The factors affecting the subjective health status of e-cigarette smokers are gender(p=.006), age(p=.036), income level(p=.044) in Model I, and physical activity (p=.033) and stress (p<.001) in Model II. As a strategy to improve the subjective health status and quit smoking of e-cigarette smokers in the young and old, nursing intervention strategies are needed to increase physical activity and reduce stress.

  • This study was to find out the influence of smoking behavior in Korean adults on chronic diseases using data from the seventh Korea national health and nutrition examination survey(KNHANES VII-2) 2017. The subjects were 6,193. The data were analyzed by frequency analysis, x2 test and logistic regression analysis using SPSS 25 complex samples Win program. The main findings were that smoking age and smoking behavior were considered as early as the age of smoking, and in case of smoking in the past, the prevalence of chronic disease increased 1.30 times and 2.75 times, respectively. When the subjects' health behaviors and demographic characteristics were simultaneously corrected, the higher the age was, the more they were 0.25 times higher and 0.34 times higher than the graduate level of education. As a result, it is necessary to improve lifestyles such as obesity and lack of exercise, to reduce the prevalence of chronic disease in Korean adults, and to pay attention to younger age groups. There is a need to develop interdisciplinary convergent approaches with great interest.
