  • In this paper the author proposes a case study of a freshmen introduction to engineering design course ing LEGO Mindstorm NXT and analyzes the survey results of the course. The diffilculties are that this course should provide various aspects of design experiences to the students while not requiring the major knowledge and skills and it should attract the students to the engineering major. According to our case study LEGO mindstorm can be a good solution to this problem. The design experience with LEGO Mindstorm NXT provides students with various aspects of design experiences including defining problem, finding constraints and functions, exploring design space, and performing preliminary design, as well as fun. This paper also provides a project list that can be used for freshmen design experience including soccer game robots, line tracer, and vacuum cleaner etc.

  • This research was an attempt to find out an entrance experience into major subject of student nurse. The purpose of this study was to understand an lived learning experience of student nurse. Method of the study was applied a phenomenological approach used by Colaizzi's analytic technique. Participants were 33 sophomore student nurse from TC University. The investigator conducted participated observations and in-depth unstructured interviews which were audio taped under the permission of student nurse, formulating meanings, themes and theme clusters. Results of the study were revealed 6 categories, 14 theme clusters, and 31 themes. Six categories include 'feeling anxious about clinical application', 'making superficial class', 'evaluation for ability of memory', 'deficit of academic evaluation criteria', 'insufficiency of textbook' and 'deficit for uniqueness of nursing science'. This findings confirm the fact that the student nurse's entrance experience was complicated and diversely influenced by their learning experiences. • This study was conducted to discover the meaning and the essential structure of the experiences of nursing students' introductory clinical practice. The participants were eight nursing students who had carried out the introductory clinical practice at a hospital. The data was collected from July 15 2019 to July 31, 2019 through focus group discussions and in-depth individual interviews using non-structured questionnaires. The data was analyzed by Colaizzi's phenomenological analysis methodology. The introductory clinical practice experienced by nursing students was categorized as followed: 'Feel worried and concern about expectations at the same time', 'Hospital experience as reality', 'Becoming accustomed to complexed emotion's, 'The first step of becoming a nurse', and 'Preparation for the future'. The five categories were expanded in the same context according to time. The essential structure of the clinical introductory practice experiences of the nursing students revealed by the study is that they begin to practice feeling worried and concerned about expectations, and concern about experience and adaption to various situations, emotions and preparation for the future. Based on the results obtained from this study, it is necessary to develop a realistic and effective education program before starting clinical practice.

  • This paper presents the results of adopting pair programming practices in an introductory university programming course. The effectiveness of pair programming is analyzed by comparing the performance and survey data gathered from the experimental class that adopted the practice to those from the control class that did not. An analysis of the performance data found that pair programming improved student performance; however, not all students in the pair programming class benefited from the practice as only some students showed clear improvements in learning outcomes. The survey showed that the specific method for matching students into pairs is a critical factor affecting their performance and satisfaction. Based on the lessons learned from this pair programming class, I propose some suggestions and guidelines for applying pair programming to programming classes including 'pair matching'.

  • Narratively I have described interactions between two teachers performing an introduction to the engineering class with various situations such as place, teacher, student and subject. I have specifically illuminated a three-dimensional narrative inquiry space embracing the culture of the university, the college of engineering and the ABEEK(Accreditation Board of Engineering Education of Korea)program. The result of the study is as follows: First, in order to stimulate the students' motivation, the teachers have to make not only their class PowerPoint slides match the size of the classroom, but the content of the slides must be condensed with core concepts. They also should utilized some video clips to empower students' interest in the subject within their classrooms. Second, the teachers should do various class activities in the classroom. Instead of spending most of the class time with his/her explanation, it would be advantageous for the teachers to allow the students to perform a task in class. Third, the teachers should ask their students about assignments which are helping students' understanding of the subject and planning of their future. Lastly, the teachers need to design the mid-term and the final tests inducing the students' motivation. Those tests also must test students' creativity and insight of the subject. Thus, the test should consist of an interpretive exercise and an essay type of item thus reducing the multiple choice types of items. There are several limitations to the study. First it is difficult to generalize what we found here because it is a case study. Second, we could not study in depth the effect of the interaction between the two teachers who were performing the introduction to the engineering course during the academic semester. Third, this study just probed into the difficulties of teaching the course. Hence, we have to understand more by focusing on each issue such as adapting to a new learning environment as a student from abroad, a practical experience boosting the students' interest in the introduction to the engineering course, also a practical experience on process based learning-versus result based learning, and an effective management of the student team presentation etc.

  • This study was conducted to analyze new nurse satisfaction and factors of the new nurse orientation program and improve their effectiveness. The CIPP evaluation model was applied in this study to assess each module of the program systematically. The respondents of the survey were 452 of five affiliated hospitals of an educational foundation. The respondents' perceptions were 'Senior', 'Operating', 'Introduction', 'Unity', 'Usefulness', and 'Needs' (from highest to lowest). Multiple regression analysis indicated that 'Operating', 'Unity', 'Usefulness', and 'Hospital Introduction' had a significant impact on satisfaction. The results presented herein indicate that planners and operators should improve effectiveness of new nurse orientation programs by enhancing sense of unity, instilling confidence as a nurse, and increasing personal utilization of subjects.

  • This study involved an investigation of prospective elementary teachers' preconceptions and experiences of diagrams and their ability to draw diagrams in solving math word problems. A questionnaire and two math word problems were administered to prospective elementary teachers who began to taking an introductory mathematics education course. The results from the analysis of their responses to the questionnaire items indicate that prospective elementary teachers appreciate the value of diagrams as tools for problem solving and communication. In addition, prospective elementary teachers have the will not only to teach their future students how to use diagrams but also to encourage them to draw diagrams in solving math word problems. However, the results also indicates that prospective elementary teachers neither use diagrams spontaneously in their math problem solving activities nor have confidence in drawing useful diagrams. Prospective elementary teachers also manifested low scores on the questionnaire items asking whether they were taught how to draw useful diagrams or encouraged by their teachers to use diagrams in their previous learning experiences. The results from the analysis of the diagrams that prospective elementary teachers drew in solving math word problems showed that most of them had difficulty drawing diagrams that represent their reasoning and solving process.
