  • This study was aimed to compare teacher's and mother's literacy beliefs, perception of picture books, and frequency of reading activities, and examine how these variables affect the interaction for reading picture books with preschoolers. The results of the survey from 120 teachers and 168 mothers who have 5-year-olds in Gyeonggi-do and Incheon-si are as follows. Teachers' literacy beliefs were closer to whole language beliefs than were mothers'. Teachers and mothers both fully realized the importance of reading aloud picture books to children with no difference between each other. The level of teachers was higher than mothers' in terms of pleasure of reading picture books. Mothers thought that it is important to reflect on preschoolers' development level, individual conditions, and daily lives when choosing picture books. On the other hand, teachers believed that the popularity of the book is more important. Overall, teachers perceived more benefits of reading picture books than mothers. Mothers reported more extensive interaction when reading books with preschoolers than teachers, while teachers spent more time on reading activities with preschoolers than mothers. Teachers' and mothers' frequency of reading activities and perception about the benefits of reading picture books had effects on their interaction for reading picture books with preschoolers.

  • This study investigated differences in toddlers' language development depending on their teachers' types of interaction during reading of picture books. A pilot study identified teachers' types of interaction as instructional, non-immediate, and passive. Fifteen teachers recruited from 10 child-care centers located in Seoul and their 90 2-year-old toddlers participated in this study. Teachers read two picture books to a small group of toddlers each week for eight weeks. Data on the toddlers' receptive and expressive language, vocabulary, reading behavior, and book handling were collected and compared by their teachers' interaction type before and after teachers' 8-week reading of picture books. Results showed that teachers using the non-immediate interaction type had the most positive effects on toddlers' language development.

  • This study was performed in order to examine the effects of one to one interactive picture book reading on infants' reading response and teachers' language teaching efficacy. A total of 50 2-year-olds from 8 child care centers in Incheon were divided into an experimental group and a control group. The interactive picture book reading activities were carried out once a week during 12 weeks. The infants in the experimental group read one-to-one with teachers, and their counterparts read the same book in a group. The change in teachers' language teaching efficacy was examined, and their subjective perception was evaluated through in-depth interview. As a result of this research, the infants in the experimental group showed significantly increased verbal response, compared to the control group, both in the total score and most sub-factors such as naming, responding, asking, demanding, spontaneous utterance, and decontextualized utterance. They also represented a significant rise, compared to the control group, in the total score of non-verbal response and factors like finger indicating, imitating, and accepting. Finally, the teachers who led the experimental group showed increased language teaching efficacy, and evaluated the effects of interactive picture book reading with infants very positively.

  • In this study, Korean older adults (70-75 yrs) were divided into two groups according to the degree of reading exposure, and real-time data were collected through a reading eye movement tracking experiment. Then, overall reading patterns and word frequency ef ects were compared with two groups of older adults and younger adults (20-28 yrs). Furthermore, through the results of the eye movement tracking experiment of older adults with rich reading exposure and older adults with poor reading exposure, we tried to find out whether reading performance af ects not only changes in age but also reading exposure. As a result of the experiment, the older adults with poor reading exposure group generally had a longer fixation time and a shorter saccade than the younger adults group, and the older adults with rich reading exposure group showed the same reading patterns as the younger adults group. The word frequency ef ect was confirmed in all groups, and the fixation time was short in the order of older adults with rich reading exposure group and older adults with poor reading exposure group. In addition, an interaction ef ect was shown in the two elderly groups according to reading exposure, but no interaction could be confirmed in the dif erence between the younger adults group and the older adults with rich reading exposure group. This suggests the possibility that reading performance is not af ected by age itself, but by the reading experience of the elderly.

  • Three levels(high, medium, low) of maternal language were used to examine the ways in which mothers interact with their children while reading together. Eighty pairs of mothers and their children were observed in their homes. Findings were that mothers made increased use of high level language with increase in children's age and IQ. Mothers' use of high level language was greater for 6-year-olds than for 5-year-olds and use of low level language was greater for 5-year-olds than for 6-year-olds. The more educated mothers used a higher level of language while less educated mothers used a lower level of language. Mothers' use of low level language predicted lower reading ability in children.

  • The purpose of this study investigate the differences in children's reading abilities of environmental print according to children's age and types of parental literacy interaction. The subjects comprised 111 illiterate children, 3 to 4 years of age, and their mothers. The Children's Reading Abilities of Environmental Print Scale (CRAEPS), Parent's Literacy Interaction Rating Scale (PLIRS) as developed by Son (2012) were used in this study. The collected data are analyzed by means of descriptive analysis, K-mean cluster analysis, Correlations, and two-way ANOVA. The results of this study are as follows : Illiterate Korean children, aged 3 to 4 years, can read environmental print which are familiar to them, and an 'open interaction style' plays an important role in developing the child's reading ability of environmental print. Therefore, in order to develop child literacy, it is necessary to research, not only teaching methods for using environmental print in the home, child care centers, and in kindergarten, but also parent education programs regarding the importance of the mother's literacy interaction style.
