Recently, mass concrete with high flowability are widely used to improve the quality and constructability in the longer span construction of prestressed concrete bridges, but it may induce nonstructural cracks due to the hydration heat and autogenous shrinkage etc. The stresses in concrete were evaluated by various experiments and numerical analysis. The tensile stress in mass concrete was increased in connection with the accumulation of hydration heat. Moreover, large amount of autogenous shrinkage from powder type admixture could add the tensile stress to mass concrete near anchorage zone. The tensile stresses in anchorage zone by heat and autogenous shrinkage exceeded the tensile strength of early stage of concrete, and small amounts of stress increasement were shown in other parts of PSC girder.
This study aims to investigate the causes and countermeasures for the occurrence of tension cracks in the slope of the rock mass of heavy equipment for road construction. Electric resistivity survey was performed to investigate the expandable tensile crack range. As a result of examining the distribution of soft zones in the rock mass, a low specific resistance zone was found at the bottom of the access road where tensile cracks occurred. It was confirmed that a low resistivity zone was distributed near the top of the excavation slope. Therefore, reinforcements was performed by determining the location of the possible tensile crack as the top of the excavation slope. Two rows of reinforced piles and anchors were proposed as a reinforcement method, and the slope stability analysis showed that the allowable safety factor was satisfied after reinforcements.

The present study concerns modelling the structural behaviour for concrete structure into the crack initiation at corrosion of steels. The degradation source included the axial load and steel corrosion. A development of the rust formed on the steel surface was considered with the interfacial gap between steel and concrete. As a result, the tensile damage could occur on the surface of concrete into the cracking with no steel corrosion, which could be further developed by the increasing rust formation, while the cracking at the steel-concrete interface was mainly attributed to the compressive deformation, being restricted within the interfacial zone.

The purpose of this study was to experimentally investigate the effects of curing methods on the compressive strength and tensile behavior of alkali-activated slag-based fiber-reinforced composite with a water-to-binder ratio of 15%. Three kinds of mixtures according to the curing conditions were prepared and compressive strength and tension tests were performed. Test results showed that the compressive strength and the first cracking strength of composites decreased when high temperature curing and air curing were adopted, while tensile strain capacity of composites increased. It was also observed that crack spacing and crack width of composites decreased by applying high temperature and air curing.
This paper presents progressive fracture analysis of concrete using boundary element method and its stabilizing technique. To determine ultimate strength and to predict nonlinear behavior of concrete during progressive crack growth, the modelling of fracture process zone is done based on Dugdale-Barenblatt model with linear tension-softening curve. We regulate displacement and traction boundary integral equation of solids including crack boundary and analyze progressive fracture of concrete beam and compact tension specimen. Also a numerical technique which considers the growth of stress-free crack of concrete during the analysis and removes snapback of postpeak behavior is proposed.

The effect of specimen geometry on the bending and tensile strengths of dissimilar joints ($\beta-Si_3N_4/S45C$) with copper interlayers was evaluated. The average bending strength of specimens with circular cross sections was higher than that of specimens with rectangular cross sections. The crack initiation stress ($\sigma_i$) was successfully determined by the acoustic emission (AE) method and was approximately 60~80% of the bending strength. The residual stresses near the interfaces on the ceramic side were measured by X-ray diffraction before conducting the bending test. The bending strength and the crack initiation stress decreased with an increase in the residual stresses. The effect of the bending strain component was evaluated by the tensile testing; the tensile strength decreased with an increase in the bending strain component and was approximately 80% of the bending strength.

The purpose of this study is to investigate experimentally the effects of type of superplasticizer on tensile behavior and cracking pattern of alkali-activated slag-based cementless composite. Three mixtures were prepared according to type of superplasticizer, and the compressive strength and tension tests were performed. Test results showed that differences of tensile strength, tensile strain capacity, and toughness of composites were up to 28.1%, 39.1%, and 66.2%, respectively, according to type of superplasticizer, although fiber balling or poor dispersion of fibers in fresh composites was not observed. It was also observed that the type of superplasticizer influenced number of cracks and maximum fiber bridging stress.

To prevent the occurrence of fractures in metal structures, it is very important to evaluate the 3D crack growth process in those structures and any related parts. In this study, tension tests and two simulations, namely, Simulation-I and Simulation-II, were performed using XFEM to evaluate crack growth in three dimensions. In the tension test, Mode I crack growth was observed for a notched metal specimen. In Simulation-I, a 3D reconstructed model of the specimen was created using CT images of the specimen. Using this model, an FE model was constructed, and crack growth was simulated using XFEM. In Simulation-II, an ideal notch FE model of the same geometric size as the actual specimen was created and then used for simulation. Obtained crack growth simulation results were then compared. Crack growth in the metal specimen was evaluated in three dimensions. It was shown that modeling the real shape of a structure with a crack may be essential for accurately evaluating 3D crack growth.
This paper describes a proposal for average crack width and immediate deflection calculation in structural concrete members. The model is mathematically derived from actual bond stressslip relationships and tension stiffening effect between reinforcement and the surrounding concrete, and the actual strains of steel and concrete are integrated respectively along the embedded length between the adjacent cracks so as to obtain the difference in the axial elongation. With these, a model for average crack width and immediate deflection in reinforced concrete flexural members are proposed utilizing difference in the axial elongation and average steel strain and moment-curvature relationship with taking account of bond characteristics. The model is applied to the test specimens available in literatures, and the crack width and deflections predicted by the proposal equation in this study are closed to the experimentally measured data compared the current code provisions.
Crack widths play an important role in the serviceability limit state. When crack widths are controlled sufficiently, the reinforcement corrosion can be reduced using only existing concrete cover thickness due to low permeability in the region of finely distributed hair-cracks. Thus, the knowledge about the tensile crack opening is essential in designing more durable concrete structures. Therefore, numerous researches related to the topic have been performed. Nevertheless accurate measurement of a crack width is not a simple task due to several reasons such as unknown potential crack formation location and crack opening damaging strain gages. In order to overcome these difficulties and measure precise crack widths, a displacement measurement system was developed using digital image correlation. Accuracy calibration tests gave an average measurement error of 0.069 pixels and a standard deviation of 0.050 pixels. Direct tensile test was performed using ultra high performance concrete specimens. Crack widths at both notched and unnotched locations were measured and compared with clip-in gages at various loading steps to obtain crack opening profile. Tensile deformation characteristics of concrete were well visualized using displacement vectors and full-field displacement contour maps. The proposed technique made it possible to measure crack widths at arbitrary locations, which is difficult with conventional gages such as clip-in gages or displacement transducers.
