  • In this paper, we propose the method that decides the shot types using face detection technique. The shot types, such as close-up shot, medium shot, and long shot, can be applied as useful information for understanding narrative structure of movies. The narrative structure of movie is builded by characters. Also their mental and emotional changes become inextricably bound up with them of narrative. The shot types are decided by distance between character and camera. If put together above them, shot types can be found by using detection technique of face size of characters and understand narrative of movie. To do this, we propose the methodology to detect shot type by face detecting and implement the system to do it. Additionally, we evaluate the performance of the system. The implementation system has been evaluated as 95% for close-up shot detection and 90% for medium shot detection, while 53.3% is just detected for long shots.

  • In this paper, I propose and evaluate the method that classifies emotional type of characters with their emotional words. Emotional types are classified as three types such as positive, negative and neutral. They are selected by classification of emotional words that characters speak. I propose the method to extract emotional words based on WordNet, and to represent as emotional vector. WordNet is thesaurus of network structure connected by hypernym, hyponym, synonym, antonym, and so on. Emotion word is extracted by calculating its emotional distance to each emotional category. The number of emotional category is 30. Therefore, emotional vector has 30 levels. When all emotional vectors of some character are accumulated, her/his emotion of a movie can be represented as a emotional vector. Also, thirty emotional categories can be classified as three elements of positive, negative, and neutral. As a result, emotion of some character can be represented by values of three elements. The proposed method was evaluated for 12 characters of four movies. Result of evaluation showed the accuracy of 75%.

Among them, Western four-elements were able to respond to Fire, Water, Air, and Earth in the order of NF(iNtuitive Feeling Type), SF(Sensory Feeling Type), NT(iNtuitive Thinking Type), and ST(Sensory Thinking Type). This is a result that can be derived by comparing individual personality theory and MBTI temperament theory among the symbols contained in ancient astrological theories. And the classification of boys, knights, queens, and kings in the four classes of person cards could be divided according to the MBTI attitude index. The boy showed an adaptive introvert using I and P, the knight showed an adaptive extrovert using E and P, the queen showed a decisive introvert using I and J, and the king showed an adaptive extrovert using E and J.

The results shows that the conservative newspapers are very similar to the progressive newspapers in terms of occupations and the types of reports, covering the people on people's pages. More specifically, both the conservative dailies and the progressive dailies report the people for whose jobs are related to both social and cultural works. However, the conservative newspapers have much more coverages than the progressive papers in terms of the publicity reporting on the people. The conservatives are also much more reports on the people who are eager to economic success than the progressive dailies; while the progressives papers have much coverages on those who are interesting in helping others than the conservatives papers. • The purpose of this study is to figure out how a child, as an active responder, responds to the characters of fantastic picture books by analyzing the child's questions and comments through the reading aloud approach. The subjects of this study are fifty-four children under five years old. Nine fantastic picture books are used as the study materials. The contents of the analysis are the frequency of children's questions and comments, the types of responses and the reasons of preferences to the characters. The results of the analysis are as follows: Firstly, the frequency of comments is three times higher than the frequency of questions. Secondly, the frequency of "evaluative questions" is the highest and "imaginative questions" is the next highest. The frequency of "transparent questions" and "personal questions" are comparatively low. Thirdly, most of the children answered that the reason of preference of the characters was "the character's appearance" and then "their subjective feeling to the character", "the character's role" and "the character's characteristics" in that order. Only one child answered that it was "the character's gender." This study will contribute to the planning and implementation of the strategies of reading picture books and to the strategic study to improve children's responses as well.
