  • Social justice has been an interest of whole geographers for almost four decades. The conception of social justice includes fairness and equity in the distribution of a wide range of attributes. The purpose of this study is to understand social justice in geography of welfare. The theories of social justice are needed to describe relationship between social justice and geography of welfare. The evaluation of spatial variations in welfare is closely associated with social justice. Equality, equity, efficiency, and fairness are the reasonable criteria to apply to the evaluation of distributions of welfare, relating to distributive(or territorial) justice. However, there are complications in the spatial application of welfare evaluation criteria, including access across space, boundary crossing and ecological fallacy.

  • This paper is to inquire into nature of the educated's geography from 1905 to 1910 by researching relevant geographical resources in HAKBO published by the Academic Society. At that time, the Patriotic Enlightenment Movement was active, and the Academic Society attempted to enlighten people, to enrich the country, and to restore the sovereign right. The educated tried to understand the reality in view of social Darwinism and make their country the winner as well as the fit in the struggle for existence by this movement. Their effort can be seen in HAKBO and geography in it. The contents of geography in HAKBO was related to world-wide geographical information and intended to instil patriotism into the hearts of people. As their research methods, they adopted systematic geographical method by comparing between region and region, or studying relationships of the nature and human, and Hettner's regional geographical method which describes human after the nature. Hence, it is proved that the educated's geography in HAKBO introduced modem geography in western society for Patriotic Enlightenment and it used its geographical methods.

  • In this paper, the approach to 'Place' and 'Experience' typically adopted by anthropogeographers will be reconsidered in light of the Taoist perspective to these phenomena. In order to develop the discussion more specifically, this exploration will be based on Jeff Malpas's philosophical theories rather than geography, and the Lao-Zhuang (Laozi and Zhuangzi) perspective will also come into pace as place and experience are examined. In this paper, I have divided place and space on the basis of their dictionary meanings and have reconsidered each via Malpas and Lao-Zhuang views. I then discuss place in terms of 'Place' and 'Place experience.' Experience is what Malpas emphasizes as having Place in regards to place. Through this, I check the placing of place and examined the characteristics of place, while comparing the views mentioned in Lao-Zhuang with those of Malpas and considered their meanings. In this study, I look at why a place should be a place, what experience in a place means, and what view and position Lao-Zhuang Thought has on this matters. Place is a meaningful subject for both the East and the West. Based on this work, I hope that Asian place theory can emerge anew.

• This study is to review research issues on North Korea and unified territory in terms of topics and approach method in Korean human geography. The conclusion of this paper is as follows. Before 1980's, topics on political geography, such as geopolitics or unified land, were the main stream in research. In 1990's with the end of the cold war and the access to material which was published in North Korea, scope of research was widened especially in geography education. After 2000's with the expansion of cooperation between South and North Korea, the scope of topics were more expanded in all field of human geography, for example, critical geopolitic in political geography, Gaeseong Industrial Complex, Najin-Seonbong region in economic geography, place names, Geumgangsan, North Korean defectors in social and cultural geography. The approach method of toward North Korea is fall into two categories. One is regional geography and the other is the unified land. In the latter approach, topics on the regional structure after reunification or on the life adaptation of defectors in South Korea etc. were studied. After unification of land, new Korean Studiea will be established and human geographers should make ready for this. Before unification, research on the land in north Korea should be proceeded in terms of historical geography.

  • This paper is to consider trends and issues of regional research in major sub-fields of human geography in Korea, following the previous one which dealt with contexts and general trends of new regional geography in Korea since the 2000s. They include historical and cultural geography on place and landscape, economic geography on industrial districts or agglomerated regions (i.e. clusters) and urban (and social) geography on urban networks and differentiation. Even though researchers in sub-fields have used different terms and concepts to identify region, they are in common to relate specificities of region to general processes such as (de)modernization, (de)industrialization, and globalization, to understand region as social and discursive constitution as well as substantive reality, and to give more attention to socio-spatial networks and relationality than territoriality of regions. These common points seem to reflect the emerging trend of new regional geography, and to get rid of existing traditional concept of region. It is suggested that major tasks for conceptualization of region in future research are to overcome dichotomy of speciality and generality, of substantive reality and discursive constitution, and of territoriality and relationality, and that important issues for empirical research on region include regional synthesis from new perspectives, uneven regional development as relational process in and between regions, and producing practice for alternative regions.

  • Since the 1980s, the academic interests on the regional geography have been renewed. This trend is usually called 'Renaissance' of the regional geography. Given this context, to explore diverse theories and methodologies in the regional geography is of much significance. Particularly, to examine the regional geography in Germany widens the understanding of not only the history, strength, and weakness of the regional geography, but also the discipline's status in the field of geography. This paper discusses the regional geography in Germany before World War II, focusing on varieties of theories and methods as well as the historical trajectory of the German regional geography. This discussion may well be significant in that 'Laenderkunde' became an important paradigm in the discipline of geography in Germany during the pre-World War II period.

The results of examining the type of knowledge according to the five themes in guidelines for geographic education in america are as follows: the empirical-analytic knowledge-centered contents are suited for designing concepts inquiry-centered teaching. The historical-hermeneutic knowledge-centered contents are suited for designing problem solving-centered teaching. The critical knowledge-centered contents are suited for designing decision-making-centered teaching. In this shsdy, 1 emphasized teaching method based on the type of knowledge in Ceographv Education according to the responses of students and academic achievement. • Southeast Asian studies in Korea have been developing rapidly, thanks to strategic and collective efforts invested by the area specialists. Especially, political scientists' contribution as 'institution builders' were remarkable. Anthropologists' leadership as 'solidarity makers' between humanities and social science is now experimenting. In terms of quantity, contribution of geography to area studies is not satisfactory yet, though geography is regarded as a discipline inseparable with area studies. However, geographers as 'horizontal networkers' can contribute to area studies through conducting research in unexplored subject and connecting the human and the physical science.
