  • It is necessary to check mutual correlations between related variables because housing prices are influenced by a lot of variables of the economy both internally and externally. In this paper, employing the Granger causality test, we have validated interrelated relationship between the variables. In addition, there is cointegration associations in the results of the cointegration test between the variables. Therefore, an analysis using a vector error correction model including an error correction term has been attempted. As a result of the empirical comparative analysis of the forecasting performance with ARIMA and VAR models, it is confirmed that the forecasting performance by vector error correction model is superior to those of the former two models.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the causal relationship between trading volume of freight and industrial growth in Korea ports, and to induce policy implications. In order to test whether time series data is stationary and the model is fitness or not, we put in operation unit root test, cointegration test. And we apply Granger causality based on an error correction model, Hsiao(1981) method and variance decomposition. The results indicate that the extent of causality between trading volume of freight and industrial growth is strong in order of Incheon port, Busan port, Gwang Yang port, Ulsan port. We can infer policy suggestions as follows; The port policy of government must be focused on re-adjusting investment among Korea ports and raising competitive power of Korea ports

  • This paper aims to analyze the causal relationship between exports and regional economic growth based on the provincial data over the period from 1952 to 2004. To reflect the regional and chronical characteristics, this paper divides China into three regions; Eastern, Central and Western regions, and also the whole period into two sub-periods; before and after 1979 when the Open-door policy(ODP) was initiated and applies Granger causality analysis. The Granger causality tests showed that exports Granger cause economic growth in the Eastern region, but not in the Central and Western regions, as a whole. When the period is divided, in the Eastern region, causal relation between the two variables was not found before the Open-door policy. For the second period, however it turns out that exports cause the region's economic growth. This result is consent with the fact that the region has been a main beneficiary of the policy. For the Central region, the tests showed no causality in the pre-ODP period, but significant bidirectional causality in the post-ODP period. Meanwhile, in the Western region, exports turned out causing economic growth significantly before the ODP, while economic growth appeared to causing trade after the ODP.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the causality of electricity consumption and econmic growth and draw policy implications. To do this, we used Testing Prodedures of Unit Root and Cointegration and then VECM and Granger causality test using data taken from China over the period 1971 to 2008. As results, there are long and short term causalities between electricity consumption and economic growth of China. These results provide a few implications to policy analysts in China. First it is still available that the electricity comes before the economic development. The increase of electricity consumption promotes economic growth. Of course there are other factors to the economic growth, but the stable supply of electricity is necessary. Second, this paper confirms the assertion that the increase of GDP expands electric consumption is valid.

  • The aims of this study to identify the relationship between regional economic growth and intraregional regional disparities. The 16 metropolitan area, the Capital region and the southeastern region of Korea were put in the spatial scope and the time range from 2005 to 2016. Regional gross domestic product data were used to show regional growth and intraregional disparity. Panel data for each spatial unit were established, panel unit root test and panel cointegration test were conducted to check the stability of the data. The DOLS method was used to identify relationship between regional economic growth and intraregional disparity, and the VECM model and Granger causality test was conducted to verify causality. The result of analysis of 16 metropolitan area units showed that the intraregional disparity increases as regional economic growth progresses. When the regional gross domestic product increased by 1%, the intraregional disparity increased by 1.258%, and there are short-term and long-term causality. Both the Capital region and the southeastern region had a mutual relationship between regional economic growth and intraregional disparity, but the disparity in the Capital region showed an increase and the southeastern region showed a decrease. The results of this study show that the regional disparity is increasing nationwide, but the Capital region and the southeastern region showed different stages of growth.

  • The purpose of this research is to conduct the empirical analysis of the short- and long-term causal relationship between public R&D investment, corporate R&D investment, and university R&D investment on economic growth in Korea. To this end, based on the time series data from 1976 to 2020, a causality test was conducted through the unit root test, cointegration test, and vector error correction model (VECM). As a result, it was found that there is a long-run equilibrium relationship between economic growth in Korea, public R&D investment, corporate R&D investment, and university R&D investment, in which a causal relationship exists in the long run. Also, while public R&D investment has a short-term effect on economic growth, corporate and university R&D investment does not have a short-term effect on economic growth. In addition, the results shows that there is a bidirectional causal relationship between economic growth and public R&D investment, corporate R&D investment and public R&D investment, and university R&D investment and public R&D investment in the short term. Through this research, it was empirically found that a highly mutual relationship exists between public R&D investment, corporate R&D investment, university R&D investment and economic growth. In order to increase the ripple effect of R&D investment on economic growth in the future, R&D investment between universities and corporations should be mutually promoted, and R&D investment by corporations should have a positive effect on public R&D investment so that public R&D investment can contribute to future economic growth.

  • The purpose of this paper is to examine determinants of export to the East Asia region, using panel unit root, panel cointegration framework, panel VECM (vector error correction model), panel FMOLS (fully modified OLS). Different panel unit root tests confirm that the data series are integrated processes with unit roots. When applying cointegration tests to long-run effect for aggregate panel data, a primary concern is to construct the estimators in a way that does not constrain the transitional dynamics to be similar among different countries of the panel. The regression equations are estimated by various panel cointegration estimators. The panel data causality results reveal that exchange rates has unidirectional effects on export and GDP, and there exists bidirectional causality between export and GDP. Also, the results from the panel FMOLS tests overwhelmingly reject the null hypothesis of zero coefficient. The panel cointegrating vectors show that the export has positive relationship with the GDP and ODI (overseas direct investment).

  • The study aims to analyze how the variables for Korea, such as the exports, imports, FDI(Inward) and FDI(Outward), influence the economic growth and how they affect each other. For the purpose of empirical analysis, this paper used the quarterly time series data from 1980 to 2010, dividing the period before and after 1997(IMF). The variables used in this study were log-transformation from the original variables. This study empirically tests the relationship among variables by using VECM with considering the time-series properties of each variable. The results found from the study are as followings. Causality analysis using VECM proved that no causality between GDP and exports existed, whereas causality between GDP and FDI(Inward) existed, in which GDP affected FDI(Inward) since IMF. However, it was found that other periods and FDI(Inward) did not affect GDF and had no causality among them.

  • This study investigates the Granger-causality between economic growth and demand for electricity in Korea, using two quarterly time-series data (real GDP and electricity consumption) for 1970:Q1 through 2009:Q4. We apply Hsiao's sequential procedure to identify a vector autoregressive model to a decision of the optimal lags in the vector error-correction model because the two time-series data contain unit roots respectively and they are cointegrated. According to the empirical results in this study, we find that Hsiao's approach to the Granger-causality indicates a bidirectional causal relation between economic growth and demand for electricity in Korea. Following the Granger and Engle's approach, we also find the statistical evidence on (1) short-run bidirectional causality between real GDP and electricity consumption, (2) bidirectional strong causality between them, and (3) long-run unidirectional causality running from demand for electricity to economic growth. Our results show an inconsistency with the existing studies on Korea's case; however, the results appear to provide more meaningful policy implications for the Korean economy and its strategy of sustainable growth.
