A Study on the User Behaviors and Satisfaction of Legislative Employees and Other Library Users for the Government Information Service of National Assembly Library of Korea (국회도서관의 공공기관 및 정부정보 서비스에 대한 입법관련 종사자와 일반이용자의 이용행태와 만족도 분석)

  • This study analysed the user behaviors and satisfaction for the government information service of Nation Assembly Library of Korea, based on the questionnaires from users including the legislative employees and other library users. The results showed that legislative employees used the services more often and have more needs for the services than other users. Most legislative employees and other library users evaluated that the services should be improved and that it would be desirable to develop a portal system and services providing the integrated search and offering government information as one stop service.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the information behavior of so-called "MZ Generation" users who are going to be the main information users of the continuously and radically changing scientific information environment due to the advent of various types of information media and rapid increment of digital information resources. Especially, the characteristics of MZ generation is investigated through questionnaire asking questions about their use of contents platforms, and online resources for everyday life information and scholarly information, and their way of producing, responding, and sharing information contents. The results show that they use YouTube most as the contents platform, prefer Naver as their everyday life information source, and use Google as the main scholarly information source. Their main purpose of using the content platform is to search for everyday life information rather than scholarly or professional information, and they are actively producing information, mostly to keep records of their everyday lives.

  • This study focuses on the user centered interface design of an information retrieval system. Users do not tend to take advantage of powerful retrieval functions of an information retrieval system unless its interface is user friendly and easy to use. The actual interface design case of the ELSA information retrieval system is reviewed in terms of design concepts and its applicable concrete designs for constructing an user centered interface.

  • Recent advances in the 4th Industrial Revolution have accelerated the change of the shopping behavior from offline to online. Search queries show customers' information needs most intensively in online shopping. However, there are not many search query research in the field of search, and most of the prior research in the field of search query research has been studied on a limited topic and data-based basis based on researchers' qualitative judgment. To this end, this study defines the type of search query with data-based quantitative methodology by applying machine learning to search research query field to define the 15 topics of search query by conducting topic modeling based on search query and clicked document information. Furthermore, we present a new classification system of new search query types representing searching behavior characteristics by extracting key variables through principal component analysis and analyzing. The results of this study are expected to contribute to the establishment of effective search services and the development of search systems.

  • In this study, we investigated the information users' needs and information seeking behavior in the field of science and technology. We found that the science and technology researchers most frequently needed information while conducting the research & development related tasks and drafting research papers. The researchers attributed the main sources of research ideas to be the communication among colleagues and the literature review. The researchers's most preferred information sources were digital libraries, web search engines, and academic information portal. In conclusion, the science and technology researchers regarded the online use of electronic materials as the primary source of information. We hope that this investigation reported herein to be the foundation for developing user-centered information services for the science and technology discipline.

  • This exploratory study describes the social bookmarking perceptions and behaviors of students in university courses. Although an emerging discussion regarding the value of social bookmarking tools exists, how users adopt tools in practice is not well known. Students were asked to utilize the bookmarking tool del.icio.us to store information relating to course projects. They were also asked to comment how they employed del.icio.us for course projects. The study analyzed student perceptions and behaviors when using social bookmarking tools for university coursework. The study noted that the use of tags, notes, and networking within these social bookmarking tools remained less active and social bookmarking services in Web 2.0 as shared collaboration, shared communities, and vertical search were less present. Utilizing social bookmarking tools to facilitate personal information management includes the activities of information use, information re-use, and mobility.

A Study on the Information Use Behavior of Social Science Researchers (사회과학 연구자의 정보이용행태에 관한 연구)

  • This study focuses on investigating and analyzing overall information use behavior of the social science researchers. questionnaires were sent to 150 researchers in three major libraries or research institutes in the area of the social sciences, Five hypotheses were tested on the basis of the assumption that there would exist unique characteristics in the information seeking behavior of social science researchers The findings of the study shows that social science researchers prefer monographs and journals: they tend to use current material: the first information source for their research activities is the cited references in the book or journal article : they are likely to delegate literature searching to the librarian, but they tend to conduct direct searching in online setting: in general, they react positively for the rapid change in information environment caused by recent development of information technology, It is emphasized that to design an efficient information system and provide an effective information service in the social science related library or information center, it is essential to consider the major characteristics and attributes of social science researchers in terms of their information use behavior.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of OPAC displays and search interfaces for children. The OPACS of Cheongju Miracle Library, Nowon Children's Library in Seoul. Los Angeles Public Library in the U.S.A. and HelMet Library System in Finland are examined on the basis of 'OPAC Display Guidelines(Draft)' published by IFLA and Nielsen's 'User Interface Design Heuristics'. Discussed are such topics as the features of basic and detailed search screens. the brief display of search results. the arrangement and full display of bibliographic records, and the displays for zero-results and large retrieval sets. The OPAC displays of Cheongju Miracle Library and Nowon Children' Library are not particularly designed to serve children which are their primary users. The OPAC displays for children of LAPL and HelMet Library System are rather simplified and customized to represent specifically the needs and information seeking behavior of children.

  • This study analyzed the user behaviors of the electronic journal users and the influences of service quality of electronic journals on the customer satisfactions, customer loyalty, and frequency of visit to the library building. Approximately 60 percent of users prefer e-journal to printed formats. Service quality of electronic journal was measured by four dimensions: reliability of service, convenience of service, public relations, and user instructions.100 faculty members and 267 graduate school students were surveyed using questionnaires. It was concluded that each dimensions of service quality positively influenced on the customer satisfactions, and customer satisfaction positively influenced on loyalty, and negatively on frequency of visit to the library building.

Internet Database Retrieval Efficiency vs. DIALOG Retrieval Efficiency (DIALOG와 인터넷 데이터베이스의 검색 효율성에 관한 비교 연구)

  • This study compared finding economic and energy information on the WWW to finding the same information on DIALOG, a traditional search service. Professional searchers answered 20 questions for end users using either of DIALOG and one Internet database (general search engine or Web database). The relevance of the results in both sets of answers was ranked by searchers and end-users, respectively. The study found that searching for information on the Web took at least twice as long as it did when using DIALOG. Relevance rating was a little higher for materials found on DIALOG. However, the relevance rating difference between two systems was not so higher than we expected. From the research results, we conclude that Internet database including Web database and general search engines is providing valuable information of economic and energy subject areas.
