  • A measurement system for magnetic anisotropy was built. The torque acting on the disc or sperical samples placed in uniform magnetic field was detected with a capacitive transducer which is connected with a transformer ratio-arm bridge. The output of the bridge was amplified with a lock-in amplifier. The cubic anisotropy constant for (100) of 3% Si-Fe was $3.3{\times}10^{4}\;J/m^{3}$. The calibration for the system was carried out with the shape anisotropy of a thin Ni wire.

  • We applied the partitioned waveform inversion to 2,026 event data recorded at 173 seismic stations from the Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology Data Managing Center and the Ocean Hemisphere network Project to estimate S-wave velocity and radial anisotropy models beneath the Western Pacific. In the Philippine Sea plate, high-Vs anomalies reach deeper in the West Philippine basin than in the Parece-Vela basin. Low-Vs anomalies found at 80 km below the Parece-Vela basin extend deeper into the West Philippine Basin. This velocity contrast between the basins may be caused by differences in lithospheric age. Low-Vs anomalies are observed beneath the Caroline seamount chain and the Caroline plate. Overall positive radial anisotropy anomalies are observed in the Western Pacific, but negative radial anisotropy is found at > 220 km depth on the subducting plate along the Mariana trench and at ~50 km in the Parece-Vela basin. Positive radial anisotropy is found at > 200 km depth beneath the Caroline seamount chain, which may indicate the 'drag' between the plume and the moving Pacific plate. High-Vs anomalies are found at 40 ~ 180 km depth beneath the Ontong-Java plateau, which may indicate the presence of unusually thick lithosphere due to underplating of dehydrated plume material.

  • In this paper, two dimensional concrete slabs for a railroad bridge were analyzed by the specially orthotropic laminates theory. Both the geometrical and material property of the cross section of the slab was considered symmetrically with respect to the neutral surface so that the bending extension coupling stiffness, $B_{ij}$ = 0, and $D_{16}=D_{26}=0$ Bridge deck behaves as specially orthotropic plates. In general, the analytical solution for such complex systems is very difficult to obtain. Thus, finite difference method was used for analysis of the problem. In this paper, the finite difference method and the beam theory were used for analysis.

  • Composite slab structures consisted with steel deck plate and concrete material show generally anisotropic structural behavior because of different stillness between the major direction and sub-direction of deck plate, and also the structures can be regarded as the laminated slab structures. It is necessary for the composite deck slab structures to carry out the exact vibration analysis to evaluate the serviceability. Also, it is needed to evaluate the exact structural behavior of composite deck slab with a layered orthotropic materials. In this paper, the thickness of lopping concrete and deck plate are used to calculate the material coefficient stiffness of a sub-direction, and an equivalent depth calculated from sectional stiffness of concrete and deck plate is applied to get the silliness of a major direction. The stiffness of two layered composite plates with different depth is determined by laminated theory. It is concluded that the presented method car efficiently analyze the structural behavior of composite deck slab consisted with steel deck plate and concrete material in the practical engineering field.

  • In this study, the impact problems are brought up and the formulation by isoparametric element is attempted for the purpose of analyzing the response characteristics of laminated plate receiving impact load based on the first-order shear deformation theory expanded from the Mindlin plate theory. The result of static analysis and dynamic analysis is drawn through the numerical analysis rectangular and circular plates of antisymmetric Angle-Ply laminated plate using the finite element method and the analysis on each displacement is compared.

  • For the conventional two-dimensional source location of acoustic emission (AE) based on the threshold crossing, wave velocity has to be measured in the actual structure to calculate the arrival-time difference and thus to form the two hyperbolae. Velocity is dependent on the fiber orientation, however, due to the dependence of elastic modulus on fiber orientation in anisotropic materials such as compost#e plates. This tan affect the accuracy of AE source location and make the source location procedure complicated. In this study, we propose a method to reduce the location error in anisotropic plates by using the numerical solution of nonlinear equations, where the velocity term has been removed by employing the fourth sensor. The efficiency and validity of the proposed method has also been experimentally verified.

  • The quality of images displayed by using an LC projector is strongly influenced by the cell-gap variations over LC panels, the essential components of the projector. We show that such influence can be relieved by introducing slit patterns in the pixel electrodes in the LC panels. The improvement comes from the compensation of the influence of cell-gap variations by optical anisotropy variations arising from the lateral components of the electric field generated by the slit patterned electrodes. Simulations show that cell-gap tolerance can be increased by more than 50% by introducing the slit patterns. This method can be used in TN mode LC panels, which use LC's with positive dielectric anisotropy. tropy.

  • Many of the bridge systems, including the girders and cross-beams, and concrete decks behave as the special orthotropic plates. Such systems with boundary conditions other than Navier or Levy solution types, or with irregular cross sections, analytical solution is very difficult to obtain. Numerical method for eigenvalue problems are also very much involved in seeking such a solution. A method of calculating the natural frequency corresponding to the first mode of vibration of beam and tower structures with irregular cross-sections was developed and reported by Kim in 1974. Recently, this method was extended to two dimensional problems including composite laminates, and has been applied to composite plates with shear deformation effects. In this paper, application of this method to the specially orthotropic laminated plates with various boundary condition is accomplished and the result of analysis is presented.

  • A post-tensioned slab bridge is analyzed by the specially orthotropic laminates theory. Both the geometry and the material of the cross section of the slab are considered symmetrical with respect to the mid-surface so that the bending extension coupling stiffness, $B_{ij}=0$, and $D_{16}=D_{26}=0$. Each longitudinal and transverse steel layer is regarded as a lamina, and material constants of each lamina is calculated by the use of rule of mixture. This bridge with simple support is under uniformly distributed vertical and axial loads. In this paper, the finite difference method and the beam theory are used for analysis. The result of beam analysis is modified to obtain the solution of the plate analysis. The result of this paper can be used for post-tensioned slab bridge analysis by the engineers with undergraduate study in near future.

  • In this study, the analytical investigation of orthotropic rectangular plate is presented. The loaded edges are assumed to be simply supported and the unloaded edges could have elastically restrained boundary conditions including the extreme boundary condition such as simple, fixed, and free. Using the closed-form solutions, the buckling analyses of orthotropic plate with arbitrary boundary conditions are performed. Based on the data obtained by conducting numerical analysis, the simplified form of equation for finding the buckling coefficient of plate with elastically restrained boundary conditions at the unloaded edges is suggested as a function of aspect ratio, elastic restraint. and material properties of the plate. The results of buckling analyses by closed-form solution and simplified form of solution are compared for various orthotropic material properties. It is confirmed that the difference of results is less than 1.5%.
