  • According to the rapid development of the information and communication technology, the demand on the efficient compression technology for the multimedia data is increased magnificently. In this Paper, we designed new compression algorithm structure using wavelet base for the compression of ECG signal and audible signal data. We examined the efficiency of the compression between 2-band structure and wavelet packet structure, and investigated the efficiency and reconstruction error by wavelet base function using Daubechies wavelet coefficient and Coiflet coefficient for each structure. Finally, data were compressed further more using Huffman code, and resultant Compression Rate(CR) and Percent Root Mean Square difference(PRD) were compared with those of existent DCT.

  • We propose an acousto-optic technique for the nondestructive evaluation of adhesion properties of a Pt/Ti thin-film interface. Since there are some problems encountered when using prevailing techniques to nondestructively evaluate the interfacial properties of micro/nano-scale thin-films, we applied an interferometer that combined the acoustic and optical methods. This technique is based on the Michelson interferometer but the resultant surface of the thin film specimen makes interference instead of the mirror when the interface is excited from the acoustic transducer at the driving frequency. The thin film shows resonance-like behavior at a certain frequency range, resulting in a low-contrast fringe pattern. Therefore, we represented quantitatively the change in fringe pattern as a frequency spectrum and discovered the possibility that the interfacial adhesion properties of a thin film can be evaluated using the newly proposed technique.

  • This paper targets to define controlling factors of pressure-coupled combustion response and estimate their effects on droplet evaporation process. Dynamic characteristics of hydrocarbon propellant vaporization perturbed by acoustic pressure are numerically simulated and analyzed. 1-D droplet model including phase equilibrium between two phases is applied and acoustic wave is expressed by harmonic function. Effects of various design factors and acoustic pressure on combustion response are investigated with parametric studies. Results show that driving frequency of acoustic perturbation and ambient pressure have important roles in determining magnitude and phase of combustion response. On the other hand, other parameters such as gas temperature, initial droplet size and temperature, and amplitude of acoustic wave cause only minor changes to magnitude of combustion response. Resultant changes in phase of heat of vaporization and thermal wave in droplet highly influence magnitude and phase of combustion response.

  • The measurement of strain under an electric field has been widely employed to comprehend the fundamental principles of electro-mechanical responses in ferroelectric, piezoelectric, and electrostrictive materials. In particular, understanding the strain properties of piezoelectric materials in response to electrical stimulation is crucial for researching and developing components such as piezoelectric actuators, acoustic devices, and ultrasonic generators. This tutorial paper introduces the components and operational principles of the linear variable differential transducer (LVDT), a widely used displacement measurement device in various industries. Additionally, we present the configuration of an experimental setup using LVDT to measure the strain characteristics of ferroelectric, piezoelectric, or electrostrictive materials under the application of an electric field. This paper includes simple measurement results and analyses obtained through the LVDT experimental setup, providing valuable information on research methods for the electro-mechanical interactions of various materials.

  • As one of the main support systems, rock bolts play a crucial role in the reinforcement of tunnels. Numerical and experimental studies using a transmission method of ultrasonic guided waves are performed to evaluate the integrity of rock bolts encapsulated by grouting paste. Numerical simulations using "DISPERSE" are carried out for the selection of the optimal experimental setup, i.e. non-destructive testing (NDT) system of the rock bolt. Based on results of the numerical simulation, the calculated frequency range for NDT testing is between 20kHz and 70kHz with the first longitudinal L(1) mode. Laboratory transmission tests are performed by attaching the piezo electric sensor at the tip of the rock bolt before embedding. Both of analytical and experimental results show that the amplitude of signals as well as the wave velocity increases with increase in the defect ratio of grouting paste. The defect in grouting paste means that the space around the rock bolt is not fully filled with the grouting paste. Experimental results also show that the increase of the wave velocity is more sensitive to the defect ratio increase than that of the amplitude. This study demonstrates that the transmission technique of ultrasonic guided waves may be a valuable tool in the evaluation of the rock bolt integrity.

  • In this study, machine learning-based clustering and classification of residential noise in apartment buildings was conducted using frequency and temporal characteristics. First, a residential noise source dataset was constructed . The residential noise source dataset was consisted of floor impact, airborne, plumbing and equipment noise, environmental, and construction noise. The clustering of residential noise was performed by K-Means clustering method. For frequency characteristics, Leq and Lmax values were derived for 1/1 and 1/3 octave band for each sound source. For temporal characteristics, Leq values were derived at every 6 ms through sound pressure level analysis for 5 s. The number of k in K-Means clustering method was determined through the silhouette coefficient and elbow method. The clustering of residential noise source by frequency characteristic resulted in three clusters for both Leq and Lmax analysis. Temporal characteristic clustered residential noise source into 9 clusters for Leq and 11 clusters for Lmax. Clustering by frequency characteristic clustered according to the proportion of low frequency band. Then, to utilize the clustering results, the residential noise source was classified using three kinds of machine learning. The results of the residential noise classification showed the highest accuracy and f1-score for data labeled with Leq values in 1/3 octave bands, and the highest accuracy and f1-score for classifying residential noise sources with an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model using both frequency and temporal features, with 93 % accuracy and 92 % f1-score.

  • Korea's film industry has been growing over the last 10 years, and there has been much attention to the antecedents of film box office sales both academic and business communities. So far, previous research which explained success factors of film or movie mainly focused on 3 stages, production, distribution and screening. However, these 3 steps are heavily vertically integrated in Korea's firm industry unlike United States. Almost 130% of movie theaters are multiplex chain and operated by film production companies such as CJ and Lotte Entertainment In this situation, film sales are likely to he affected by movie theaters own facilities or location factors rather than movie contents. Based. on resource-based view and S-C-P paradigm, the authors examined "whether movie theater's facilities factors and trade area factors such as accessibility, competitive situation, and population have effect to movie theater's sales revenues. The results showed that the average occupancy of theater is the most important factor to movie theaters sales in both large and small cities. In large cities, movie theater's facilities factors which included vibration seat special sound system, premium movie theater, VIP lounge are relatively important than trade area factors. In contrast, in small cities, location factors and accessibility are the most important factors to movie theaters sales. We discuss the managerial and theoretical implication for the results and the specific limitations are suggested at the end of the paper.

  • The least mean fourth (LMF) adaptive algorithm is a stochastic gradient method that minimizes the error in the mean fourth sense. Despite its potential advantages, the algorithm is much less popular than the conventional least mean square (LMS) algorithm in practice. This seems partly because the analysis of the LMF algorithm is much more difficult than that of the LMS algorithm, and thus not much still has been known about the algorithm. In this paper, we explore the statistical convergence behavior of the LMF algorithm when the input to the adaptive filter is zero-mean, wide-sense stationary, and Gaussian. Under a system idenrification mode, a set of nonlinear evolution equations that characterizes the mean and mean-squared behavior of the algorithm is derived. A condition for the conbergence is then found, and it turns out that the conbergence of the LMF algorithm strongly depends on the choice of initial conditions. Performances of the LMF algorithm are compared with those of the LMS algorithm. It is observed that the mean convergence of the LMF algorithm is much faster than that of the LMS algorithm when the two algorithms are designed to achieve the same steady-state mean-squared estimation error.

  • As one of elements to be able to endow more exciting and higher degree of completion for game, the feeling of hit is realized by image, sound and body-sensing (vibration) effects. When the feeling of hit is realized by game developer, most proper effects will be chosen with regard to genre, system and standpoint of world for the game. In general, most of choices for the effects are performed by the experience of game developer or referring the other games. Nevertheless the related studies are not significant in comparison with the importance for the feeling of hit, and the fundamental studies are mostly not accomplished. This paper introduces a study on efficiency and important factors for the feeling of hit by analyzing the properties and degrees of feeling for all effects to represent the feeling of hit through experiments. For this, a software simulator was implemented to test all effects and therewith the final results are presented through questionnaires for the feeling of hit sent to gamers. Our results are expected to be used to accomplish higher degree of completion for mobile games or web games with limited resources.

  • Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCPs) have been widely utilized for assessing streamflow discharge, yet few comprehensive studies were conducted to evaluate discharge uncertainty in consideration of individual uncertainty components. It could be mostly because it was not easy to determine which uncertainty framework can be appropriate to rigorously analyze streamflow discharge driven by ADCPs. In this regard, considerable efforts have been made by scientific and engineering societies to develop a standardized theoretical framework for uncertainty analysis in hydrometry. One of the well-established UA methodology based on sound statistical and engineering concepts is Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty Measurement (GUM) adopted widely by various scientific and research communities. This research fundamentally adapted the GUM framework to assess individual uncertainty components of ADCP discharge measurements, and subsequently provided results of a customized experiment in a controllable real-scale artificial river channel. We focused particularly upon sensitivities of uncertainty components in the GUM framework driven by ADCPs direct measurements such as depths, edge distance, submerged depth, velocity gap, sampling time, repeatability, bed roughness and so on. Section-by-Section method for ADCP discharge measurement was applied for uncertainty analysis for this study. All of measurements were carefully compared with data using other instrumentations such as ADV to evaluate individual uncertainty components.
