The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of group music therapy for at-risk Korean soldiers on the levels of adjustment and stress. The study was conducted at a division of the Korean Army with 7 participants who were classified as "at-risk soldiers" based on the results of a psychiatric evaluation, MMPI-II and a personal interview with a counselor. The participants received 12 hours of group music therapy for three weeks and their scores on stress and adjustment inventories were compared before and after the treatment. The pre and post scores were analyzed with the Wilcoxon test for repeated measures. The results revealed that the overall stress level was significantly decreased while there was no significant improvement in the adjustment levels at p < .05. The research findings and personal remarks from the participants suggest that group music therapy may provide effective support for at-risk Korean soldiers in coping with stress and adjustment to military life.
This study aims to conduct a music psychotherapy program on North Korean child defectors, who are experiencing acculturative stress, and to discover the effects of the program on the participants' acculturative stress. This study targeted four North Korean child defectors, who belonged to an H afterschool class in Seoul and performed the program in individual sessions for about 40 minutes per session, totaling 14 sessions. The research results include the following. First, after comparing the results of acculturative stress score that measured before and after the execution of the music psychotherapy program, the mean of the score was significantly decreased from 32.75 to 23 average. Furthermore, as a result of conducting a qualitative analysis of the lingual responses that the participants demonstrated in musical activity, in relation to acculturative stress, the participants were found to experience a positive change. These results imply that the music psychotherapy program offers consistent support through music to North Korean Child Defectors, who are cowering psychologically and experiencing difficulty in adaptation, and reinforces inner resources through their positive self-perception, which indicates that it can be an effective mediation in reducing their acculturative stress.
The purpose of this study was to meta-analyze the stress intervention program applied to patients with hemodialysis in Korea to confirm the effectiveness of the stress intervention program and to identify the characteristics and trends of the stress intervention method. A total of 10 studies were selected, and Quality Assessment tool was used MINORS and the data was analyzed using Comprehensive Meta Analysis Version 3.0 and Review manager version 5.3 The Quality Assessment score of studies was 21.2 points, and the effect size on the psychological stress was medium(g=-.72), and the effect size on cortisol of the physiological stress was also medium(g=-.52). Subgroup analysis showed that Music therapy and aromatherapy, individual providing, over 60 minutes per session and total of 10-20 times were more effectively reduced stress. Findings of this meta-analysis would be helpful for health professionals to provide more effective stress intervention program. Further randomized controlled trials of stress intervention program for patients with hemodialysis are more needed.
This case study examined whether a cooperative musical instrument playing could enhance interactions between children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and their neurotypical (NT) siblings. It involved three children with ASD aged 7-12 years and three NT siblings aged 6-11 years. Each group, comprising a child with ASD and their NT sibling, participated in a 40-minute sessions twice weekly for eight sessions over four weeks. The intervention included three stages: simultaneous action, complementary action, and achieving a joint goal. Evaluation criteria included the initiation and response behaviors of each child, and sequential interactive behaviors and cooperative behaviors between pairs were measured. Additionally, before and after the intervention, parents and NT sibling assessed their perceived sibling relationships. Results showed increased interactive and cooperative behaviors. Post-intervention, both parents and NT siblings rated the sibling relationship highly, despite little change in sibling conflict and competition consciousness. These findings indicate that interactive instrument playing can enhance perceptions of siblings as cooperative play partners and aid in teaching them how to collaborate during interactions.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine effects of music intervention on environmental stress and sleep quality in liver transplant patients who are receiving care in one-person isolation rooms of an ICU. Methods: The study was a quasi-experimental design pre-and-post nonequivalent control group. Participants were 37 patients (18 in the experimental group and 19 in the control group) who, after receiving liver transplant, were hospitalized in one-person isolation rooms of the ICU. The study covered patients admitted between August 2016 and December 2017. Earplugs and sleep shades were provided as ordinary care to both experimental and control groups, and music intervention was provided to the experimental group three times a day for 30 minutes each from the first day of hospitalization. Results: The first hypothesis, "The experimental group who received music intervention will experience a lower environmental stress level than the control group" was supported (Z=-3.212, p<.001). The second hypothesis, "The experimental group who received music intervention will experience a higher sleep quality than the control group" was also supported (t=3.715, p=.001). Conclusion: Findings show that music intervention is an effective nursing intervention to reduce environmental stress and improve sleep quality in liver transplant patients in the ICU.
Purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of music therapy on vital signs, anxiety, cortisol, and pain of Cataract Surgery Patients in elderly. Non equivalent control group pre-post test design was adopted. The number of subjects consists of 41 elderly having cataract surgery, 21 in the experimental group and 20 in the control group. Data were analyzed by $x^2$ test, Fisher's exact test, independent sample t-test, and Mann-Whitney U test. Results were: 1) there was no difference between two groups in their vital signs changes 2) anxiety, cortisol in the saliva, and pain of the experimental group decreased more significantly than those of the control group. This study confirmed the ability of music therapy to relieve pain and anxiety in cataract surgery, and suggested that music therapy could be used effectively in various interventions for the elderly.
This study is conducted to analyse the process and the pattern of motivation for musical expression in clinical music therapy for the adults in the mental health center. The participant were 8 adults purposive sampling who had more than one year music therapy experience in the mental health center and their age ranged from 27 to 53. A major category derived and analysed from the grounded theory method by Strauss and Corbin. The qualitative analysis indicated that motivation for musical expression in music therapy, which was the central phenomenon in this study, was determined by the music therapist and songs used in the sessions. The central phenomenon was caused by the therapist's friendly attitude, high musical capacity, the familarity of the selected songs and the significancy of the lyrics of selected songs. The levels of reliability about the therapist's personality and musical ability as a professional music therapist and the positive arousal of the songs used in sessions affected as the contextual condition. Spontaneous musical expression in music therapy brought the escape from reality, release of stress and sharing by the intervening condition 'empathy' and this resulted in mood regulation, the instillation of hope and group cohesion. It has been found that there were three types of motivation in music therapy: intrinsic motivation, relationship dependent extrinsic motivation and evasive motivation.
Given the ongoing discussion regarding remote music therapy following the COVID-19 pandemic and the pivotal role of parental involvement in it, this study investigated parents' perceptions on their roles in a synchronous videoconferencing music therapy for their children with developmental disabilities. A total of 32 participants participated in an online survey comprising 68 questions. Descriptive statistics summarized the collected responses, and Pearson's correlation was conducted to examine the relationship between perceived parental roles, psychological burden, and willingness to participate in future remote music therapy. The findings showed that parents of children with developmental disabilities acknowledged the benefits of tele-music therapy and possessed substantial information about its implementation. Furthermore, they reported their roles of providing physical, participatory, and mediating support. As parents exhibited greater satisfaction with their role in supporting their children's participation or managing their off-task behaviors, they perceived reduced psychological burden. These findings hold significant implications for expansion of tele-music therapy strategies to address the unique needs of children with developmental disabilities and support their parents as immediate mediators for their children.
This study aims to examine the moderating effect of Extended Song Sharing for helping alcoholics to deal with stress. ESS is structure with non-verbal techniques approaches traditional Song Sharing technique. For this study, 64 alcoholics hospitalized were experimental (n=33) and control groups (n=31). The group was asked to participate in 12 ESS programs twice a week, every 45 minutes for six weeks. During this period, all those who belonged to the experimental and control groups were required to continue to participate in treatment programs prescribed by hospitals. Result: ESS interventional effects on subjects were evaluated using a stress response scale. As a result of the experiment, the WCC score of the experimental group increased 7.3% (p=0.000) but there was almost no change in the control group (1.5% increase, p=0.019). Effects of WCC types were higher in the experimental group, followed by 13.67% (p=0.006) in coping with wishful thinking, 9.66% (p=0.000) in the pursuit of social support, 6.35% (p=0.000) in dealing with problems, and 4% (p=0.000) in coping with emotions. ESS activities have been confirmed to improve the way alcoholics cope with stress.
We aimed to provide evidences for developing non-pharmacological intervention in older adults with Mild Cognitive Impairment(MCI) by integrated literature review. The final 16 papers were selected as a result of an integrated literature analysis. All of them are focused on strengthening cognitive activities, while Korean studies have often merged emotional activities such as music therapy and laughter therapy rather than physical activities such as exercise therapy, international studies have combined physical activities rather than emotional activities. The effects of non-pharmacological intervention differed according to the outcome variables. The primary variables were cognitive function and depression, and secondary variables were found to have effects on physical function, activities of daily living (ADL), and self-efficacy. This study contributes to a multidisciplinary approach that can be applied in the clinical field through the development of various non-pharmaceutical intervention for the prevention of dementia in the older adults with MCI.
