  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a preference music therapy on anxiety and pain of cystoscopy. Methods: This study was performed using the quasi-experimental study design with non-equivalent control group pre-test and post-test. Total of 76 adult clients admitted to a tertiary hospital located in Daegu, South Korea were selected by convenience sampling 19 in the control and 57 in the experimental group. The data were analyzed by $x^2$, t-test, paired t-test, and repeated measures ANOVA using SPSS 17.0. Results: Implementing a preference music therapy was found to be effective in reducing anxiety level before cystoscopy in the present study. However, there were no significant effects of this preference music therapy in reducing pain and anxiety during cystoscopy. In addition, there were no significant effects of a preference music therapy on the patients' satisfaction of the anxiety, discomfort, and pain relieving. Conclusion: The findings support that implementing a preference music therapy may reduce anxiety before the cyctoscopy procedure. Therefore, it can be suggested that a preference music therapy needs to be consider-ed as a regular nursing intervention to reduce patient anxiety level before cystoscopy.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of music therapy on state anxiety and pain among patients undergoing burn dressing changes. Method: A convenience sample of 32 adult burn patients who were eligible and provided consent were included in the study which was a quasi-experimental study of a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. Fifteen patients in the control group received the routine burn dressing changes but 17 patients in the experimental group listened to self-selected music through headphones connected to a CD player during burn dressing changes for three days. All subjects of the music group chose the type of music that would relax them. Before and after burn dressing changes, subjects completed the State Anxiety Inventory and self-report of pain scores. Result: There was a significant reduction in state anxiety before and after burn dressing changes in those who received music therapy in contrast to those who did not receive music therapy. The music group reported lower pain scores before and after burn dressing changes than did the non-music group. Conclusion: These findings indicate that music therapy composed of self-selected music is a valuable intervention for the treatment of pain and anxiety in patients undergoing burn dressing changes.

Two groups consisted of subjects assigned : one the experimental group(33 wemen), and the other the control group(32 wemen). The music therapy was performed 3 times to experimental group just before surgery day, on surgery day. The level of anxiety was measured by State Anxiety Inventory, blood pressure, pulse rate, respiratory rate. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, $x^2-test$, t-test, Repeated measures of ANCOVA. The results of study were as fellows : 1) State anxiety scores were significantly different between the experimental group and the control group after music therapy. 2) Systolic blood pressures and diastolic blood pressures were significantly different between the experimental group and the control group after music therapy. 3) Pulse rates were significantly different between the experimental group and the control group after music therapy. 4) Respiratory rates were significantly different between the experimental group and the control group after music therapy. According to these results, music therapy can be regarded as an effective nursing intervention that relieves anxiety of cesarean section wemen.

Result: The results of this study were as follows: The score of the experimental group was lower than the score of the control group for the situational anxiety (t=-12.56, p=0.000) and systolic blood pressure (t=-3.97, p=0.000) before the examination was supported. The vital sign was partially supported. There was no significant difference(t=-1.05, p=0.297) in the diastolic blood pressure (t=-1.05, p=0.297) and pulse rate(t=-1.30, p=0.199) before the examination of the experimental group and lower than the score of the control group. Conclusion: Music therapy could be useful in the nursing practice, and be utilized as a way of nursing intervention to reduce anxiety of the patients in specific clinical situations. • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of music therapy on anxiety of patients in emergency room. Methods: The study was designed using a noneqivalent control group nonsynchronized design. For 20 minutes, the experimental group(22 patients) had listened to music and the control group(23 patients) had bed rest. A six-item state anxiety scale developed by Marteau and Bekker, which was based on Spielberger's State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, blood pressure and pulse rate were measured to all study participants before and after the intervention. The data was analyzed by the SPSS 12.0 program. Results: 1) The experimental group's state anxiety level were significantly lower than the control group's(t=2.220, p=.032). 2) There were no significant differences in both group's diastolic(t=-.495, p=.623) and systolic blood pressure(t=831, p=.411). 3) The experimental group's pulse rate was significantly lower than the control group's(t=2.363, p=.023). Conclusion: Music therapy may be applied as a nursing intervention to decrease anxiety in emergency room.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to examine the effects of music therapy on anxiety, sedation, and stress responses of patients during surgery with spinal anesthesia. Methods: A quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent control group pre-post test was used. There were 55 adults over 19 years of age scheduled for a lower leg surgery with spinal anesthesia: 27 in the treatment group and 28 in the comparison group. Each subject in the treatment group identified their music preference which was used during the period of surgery which usually lasted, 61 minutes. Data were analyzed using chi-square, Fisher's exact test, independent t-test and repeated measured ANOVA. Results: There were significant reported differences in levels of anxiety, sedation, and stress responses which were measured by plasma cortisol levels, heart rate, and respiratory rate. The findings of all the variables were effectively decreased among those in the treatment group than the comparison group. Conclusion: The preference based music therapy may be useful as a non-pharmacological intervention.
