  • This paper examines the perception of Korean phonemes by Egyptian learners of Korean and presents the learnability gradient of Korean consonants and vowels through High Variability Phonetic Training (HVPT). 50 Egyptian learners of Korean (27 low proficiency learners and 23 high proficiency learners) participated in 10 sessions of HVPT for Korean vowels, word initial and final consonants. Participants were tested on their identification ability of Korean vowels, word initial consonants, and syllable codas before and after the training. The results showed that both low and high proficiency groups did benefit from the training. Low proficiency learners showed a higher improvement rate than high proficiency learners. Based on the HVPT results, a learnability gradient was established to give insights into priorities in teaching Korean sounds to Egyptian learners.

  • The minimal pairs mean the pairs that have same phonotactics except just one sound in the sequences cause different lexical items. This paper proposes the searching tool of minimal pairs for efficiency of phonological researches with minimal pairs. We suggest a guide to develop Korean minimal pair searching programs by comparing to other programs. Proposing tool has user-friendly interface, minimizing key inputs, for linguistics who are not fluent in computer programs. And it serves the function which classifies the words in dictionary for the detailed researches. And for efficiency, it increases speed of dictionary loading by separating syllables through Unicode analysis, and optimizes dictionary structure for searching efficiency. The searching algorithm gains in speed by hashing algorithm using syllable counts. In our tool, the speed is improved more than earlier version about 5 times at converting dictionary and about 3 times at searching.

  • In this paper, speech units appropriate for recognition of Korean language have been studied. For better speech recognition, co-articulatory effects within an utterance should be considered in the selection of a recognition unit. One way to model such effects is to use larger units of speech. It has been found that diphone is a good recognition unit because it can model transitional legions explicitly. When diphone is used, stationary phoneme models may be inserted between diphones. Computer simulation for isolated word recognition was done with 7 word database spoken by seven male speakers. Best performance was obtained when transition regions between phonemes were modeled by two-state HMM's and stationary phoneme regions by one-state HMM's excluding /b/, /d/, and /g/. By merging rarely occurring diphone units, the recognition rate was increased from $93.98\%$ to $96.29\%$. In addition, a local interpolation technique was used to smooth a poorly-modeled HMM with a well-trained HMM. With this technique we could get the recognition rate of $97.22\%$ after merging some diphone units.

  • This paper proposes a method for recognizing both phoneme and emotion using a common neural network and a multi-task training method for the common neural network. The common neural network performs the same function for both recognition tasks, which corresponds to the structure of multi-information recognition of human using a single auditory system. The multi-task training conducts a feature modeling that is commonly applicable to multiple information and provides generalized training, which enables to improve the performance by reducing an overfitting occurred in the conventional individual training for each information. A method for increasing phoneme recognition performance is also proposed that applies weight to the phoneme in the multi-task training. When using the same feature vector and neural network, it is confirmed that the proposed common neural network with multi-task training provides higher performance than the individual one trained for each task.

  • The aim of this study was to find out effect of the orthographic representation on speech sound segmentation performance. Children's performances of the orthographic representation task and the speech sound segmentation task had positive correlation in words of phoneme-grapheme correspondence and negative correlation in words of phoneme-grapheme non-correspondence. In the case of words of phoneme-grapheme correspondence, there was no difference in performance ability between orthographic representation high level group and low level group, while in the case of words of phoneme-grapheme non-correspondence, the low level group's performance was significantly better than the high level group's. The most frequent errors of both groups were orthographic conversion errors and such errors were significantly more noticeable in the high level group. This study suggests that from the time of learning orthographic knowledge, children utilize orthographic knowledge for the performance of phonological awareness tasks.

  • In this paper, we studied on the difference of speaker adaptation according to the phoneme classification for Korean Speech recognition. In order to study of speech adaptation according to the weight of difference of phoneme as recognition unit, we used SCHMM as recognition system. And Speaker adaptation method used in this paper was MAPE(Maximum A Posteriori Probability Estimation), Linear Spectral Estimation. In order to evaluate the performance of these methods, we used 10 Korean isolated numbers as the experimental data. It is possible for the first and the second methods to be carried out unsupervised learning and used in on-line system. And the first method was shown performance improvement over the second method, and hybrid adaptation showed the better recognition results than those which performed each method. And the result of Speaker adaptation using the variable weight according to the phoneme had better than the result using fixed weight.

  • This paper describes a speech synthesis technique using a diphone as an unit phoneme. Speech synthesis is basically accomplished by concatenating unit phonemes, and it's major problem is discontinuity at the connection part between unit phonemes. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a new spectral smoothing technique which reflects not only formant trajectories but also distribution characteristics of spectrum and human's acoustic characteristics. That is, the proposed technique decides the quantity and extent of smoothing by considering human's acoustic characteristics at the connection part of unit phonemes, and then performs spectral smoothing using weights calculated along a time axis at the border of two diphones. The proposed technique reduces the discontinuity and minimizes the distortion which is caused by spectral smoothing. For the purpose of performance evaluation, we tested on five hundred diphones which are extracted from twenty sentences using ETRI Voice DB samples and individually self-recorded samples.

  • The purpose of this study was to supply the baseline data for auditory rehabilitation in the field through error type and rate of the phoneme which the hearing impaired feel difficulty to discriminate. Thirty participants with sensorineural hearing loss heard KCPT lists through recorded voice by male and female to get the data about error type and KCPT score accordance with talker's gender. In the initial consonant test list, /ㄷ/, /ㅂ/, /ㅃ/, /ㅉ/, /ㅌ/ showed more than 30% error rate while /ㄱ/and /ㄷ/ showed in final consonant test list. The most common error type was the initial consonant substitution or the final consonant substitution for the initial or final consonant test lists. Talker's gender effect was not signigicant showing no statistical difference between the scores when compared results from male voice and female voice. It means that KCPT can be used regardless of talker's gender in clinics.

  • This study attempted to analyze the consonant perception ability and errors and to verify compatibility items for hearing impaired children wearing hearing aids and cochlear implants using the Phoneme Perception Test for School-Aged children (PPT-S). As a result of the study, it was found that children with hearing impairments have more difficulty in perceiving final consonants than initial consonants. The hard type of PPT-S, in which the articulation method and articulation place of the target and foil words are similar, felt more difficult than the easy type. Among the initial consonants, the incorrect response rate for aspiration sound was higher. In the case of final consonants, the incorrect answer rate for 'ㄷ' and 'ㅁ' was relatively higher. There was no significant difference in the percentage of correct response rate according to the gender of the speaker. The above results can be usefully used as basic data for standardizing of PPT-S and evaluating the intervention effects before and after hearing rehabilitation with hearing impaired children.
