This study was conducted to determine the optimal extraction condition of temperatures and kinds of extraction solvent, and antimicrobial activity of ethanol extract of Quercus mongolica leaf and organic acid against foodborne microorganisms. The antimicrobial activity of ethanol extract at $60^{\circ}C$ for 6 hour against foodborne microorganisms was stronger than those at $30^{\circ}C\;and\;90^{\circ}C$. Also, the ethanol extract showed stronger antimicrobial activity than those of water and methanol extract. The minimal inhibitory concentrations of the ethanol extract of Quercus mongolica leaf against B. cereus and L. monocytogenes, was $62.5{\sim}125\;{\mu}g/mL$ but, the minimal inhibitory concentration was $250\;{\mu}g/mL$ against S. typhimurium and P. aeruginosa and over $500\;{\mu}g/mL$ against E. coli O157:H7, respectively. The minimal inhibitory concentrations of the lactic, citric, acetic acid and the ethanol extract of Quercus mongolica leaf against B. cereus and L. monocytogenes was 2500, 5000, 1250 and $125\;{\mu}g/mL$, respectively. The combined effect of each organic acid and the ethanol extract against B. cereus was not observed but, synergistic effect was observed against L. monocytogenes. In the meantime, when the ethanol extract was combined with each organic acid at sub-lethal concentration, the combination did not increase the inhibitory effect of the most active single compound alone against E. coli O157:H7, respectively.
The emergence of biofilms have generated urgent alarm in clinical and medicine manufacturing fields engaged in the search for novel antimicrobials from ethno-medicinal plants. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has estimated that 70% of all microbial infections in the world are associated with biofilms. In addition, the emergence of strains resistant to conventional antibiotics has become a serious threat to global public health. Therefore, finding alternative medicines is a major issue in the field of integrative medicine. In this study, four different herb extracts were screened for biofilm formation and the activities of Klebsiella pneumoniae. Of them, Scutellaria scordifolia Fisch. ex Schrank extracts had inhibitory effects on bacterial growth and biofilm formation. The Scutellaia scordifolia Fisch. ex Schrank extracts did not cause any cytotoxicity to L929 cells. The growth of K. pneumoniae was inhibited compared to other comparators in the experimental group containing Scutellaia scordifolia Fisch. ex Schrank. In a group of experiments with plant extracts, a maximum of 60 times the level of living bacteria was confirmed compared to the controls without the addition of the Scutellaia scordifolia Fisch. ex Schrank extracts. In a group of experiments with a significantly lower level of fluorescence extraction, differential interference contrast imaging showed that the number of K. pneumonae was reduced. These results suggest that extracts of this plant be applied as antimicrobial agents against K. pneumoniae, particularly in biofilm forms.

Antimicrobial activity of Sargassum thunbergii was determined by paper disc assay and minimum concentration inhibitor (MIC) test. A water extract of S. thunbergii did not show the antimicrobial activity, but an ethanol extract of S. thunbergii (SHE) inhibited Serratia liquefaciens, Salmonella Typhimurium, Pseudomonas aerogenosa and all of the tested gram-positive bacteria at 4 mg/mL. Especially, Bacillus subtilis, Clostridium perfringens and Listeria monocytogenes were susceptible to SHE. As the results of MIC test, SHE inhibited the growth of B. subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus and Listeria monocytogenes at concentration of $0.1{\sim}0.3%$, and inhibited C. perfringens at 0.01%. In the thermal and pH stability test for SHE, antibacterial activities of SHE were maintained when the SHE was treated at $121^{\circ}C$ for 15 minutes or under pH $2{\sim}8$. SHE was partitioned in the order of n-hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate and butanol. As the results of the MIC test for each obtained fraction, no fraction exhibited higher antibacterial activity than that of the crude SHE. However, a mixture of chloroform, ethylacetate and ethanol fractions showed higher antibacterial activity than SHE.

The antimicrobial substance from Pyrola japonica were extracted and isolated. Eighty percent ethanol extract of dried Pyrola japonica was fractionated to hexane, diethyl ether, ethyl acetate and aqueous layer. The hexane-soluble fraction showed the highest inhibitory activity against Bacillus subtilis. Moreover the hexane layer was fractionated into 5 groups by silica gel column chromatography. From the results, group No. 2 ($18{\sim}40$ fractions) showed the highest antimicrobial activity. The group was re-separated to 10 fractions by preparative thin layer chromatography and the peak I as active fraction was isolated by HPLC.
To develop a natural antibacterial agent for fish bacterial diseases, antibacterial activity, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) and bactericidal effect of cinnamon bark extract were examined against fish pathogenic bacteria. The antimicrobial effect of the extract to the fish diet was also estimated, Cinnamon bark extract showed the broad spectrum of antibacterial activity against fish pathogenic bacteria, especially, it had strong activity against Streptococcus iniae, Edwardsiella tarda and Listonella anguillarum. Its MIC was $75.8\sim189.6{\mu}g/mL$ against Cram positive bacteria, and $75.8\sim113.8{\mu}g/mL$ against Gram negative bacteria in liquid medium, It was found to show stronger bactericidal action against Gram negative bacteria than Cram positive bacteria. According to increasing concentrations of the extract, it resulted in a proportional reduction of viable cell counts of both S. iniae and L. anguillarum. The former was not detected by addition of $189.6{\mu}g/mL$ after 12 hours incubation and the latter by addition of $151.6{\mu}g/mL$ after 24 hours incubation, respectively. It was reasonable that fish diet was soaked in cinnamon bark extract for ten minutes. The relationship formula between the weight of fish diet and the extract absorbed to fish diet was Y=7.2726X+4.5083 ($R^2=0.9998$). The fish diet soaked in the extract inhibited the growth of all strains used in this study. Its antibacterial activity was stable at the range from $10^{\circ}C\;to\;35^{\circ}C$ during the storage period of 28 days. When the diet soaked in the extract was incubated in liquid medium at $35^{\circ}C$, it inhibited the growth of microorganisms inhabited in the diet.

This study was to determine the inhibitory effect against food borne pathogens of ethanol and water extracts from leaf, stem and root of Orostachys japonicus. On the paper disc assay, no detectable bactericidal activity in the water extracts from leaf, stem and root of Orostachys japonicus and ethanol extracts form stem and root of Orostachys japonicus was shown. However, ethanol extract of Orostachys japonicus leaf showed the highest antimicrobial activity. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of ethanol extracts was determined to range from 0.05 to 0.1% in leaf of Orostachys japonicus against gram positive bacteria and yeast. Antimicrobial activity of ethanol extracts was stable by heating at $121^{\circ}C$ for 15 min, and not affected by pH $2{\sim}10$ except for B. subtilis. These findings suggest ethanol extract from leaf of Orostachys japonicus may be useful as natural preservative.
This study was initiated to evaluate the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of methanol extract (ME) and hot water extract (HWE) obtained from the fruiting bodies of medicinal mushroom, Phellinus gilvus. The free radical scavenging activity of ME from P. gilvus on 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) were 93.65% at 2 mg/mL, which was comparable with the positive control, butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT, 96.97%) at the same concentration. The ferrous ion-chelating ability of ME and HWE was significantly higher than that of BHT at all concentration levels. The antimicrobial assay of ME was performed against six bacteria and one species of fungus. ME exhibited antibacterial activity against 5 out of 6 bacteria: Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus mutans, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa; whereas, ME did not show antimicrobial activity against gram-negative bacterium Vibrio vulnificus and fungal species Candida albicans. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of ME against 5 strains of bacteria, such as S. aureus, S. mutans, B. subtilis, E. coli, and P. aeruginosa, was 100, 100, 50, 100, 200 mg/mL, respectively. The results suggest that good antioxidant and microbial activities of P. gilvus fruiting bodies might be used for natural antioxidant and antimicrobial agents.

Cymbidium is one of perennial herbs belonging to the Orchidaceae and is known as a medicinal plant. However, its scientific data are insufficient. The purpose of this study is to extract from root and stem of Cymbidium, to investigate the biological effects of them. Cymbidium antibacterial effects of the extracts were performed by antibacterial test against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), Staphylococcus saphrophyticus (S. saprophyticus), Proteus vulgaris (P. vulgaris) and Klebsiella pneumonia (K. pneumonia). Antioxidant effects of the extracts were carried out by DPPH radical scavenging. Total phenolic contents were also determined. Moreover, Cell viability of extracts against MTT assay was cell viability against HepG2 cell and also measures Cholesterol adsorptivity of extracts. In this study, the extracts inhibited the growth of bacteria. Particularly Cymbidium root extracts by only ethanol extraction showed highest antimicrobial effect against S. aureus. The Cymbidium stem extracts by both ethanol extraction and sonication for 1 hour had higher antioxidant activites as well as total phenolic contents. Cell cytotoxicity showed higher than $50{\mu}g/mL$. Cholesterol adsorptivity showed lower than 20%. These results suggest that the Cymbidium might be a source of anti-bacterials and anti-oxidants.

Due to the increase in fine dust caused by environmental pollution, oxidative damage and aging of the skin are accelerated. In this study, the antioxidant, hyaluronic acid, filaggrin, MMP-1, and ROS level of selected herbal extracts were evaluated to confirm the protective efficacy of keratinocytes treated PM10. As a result, the antioxidant capacity of 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH), 2,2'-azinobis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid(ABTS), and FRAP assay increased in a concentration-dependent manner. Keratinocytes the group treated with 300 ㎍/ml of PM10, hyaluronic acid and filaggrin decreased by more than 50%, and increased in the group treated with extracts of Alpinia officinarum, Ulmus macrocarpa, and Ulmus macrocarpa but decreased when the extract was treated, which is evaluated as inhibiting the degradation of collagen and elastin. In addition, in the case of ROS measurement using zebrafish embryos, it was confirmed that the extract was reduced when the extract was treated 25 ㎍/ml, the intensity of fluorescence similar to the negative control was shown, confirming that the production of ROS was significantly reduced. Through this study, the selected oriental medicinal materials, Alpinia officinarum, Ulmus macrocarpa, and Ulmus macrocarpa, protect the skin from fine dust. It is thought that it can be used as an anti-aging product for skin improvement as a material that can be improved or improved.
Antibacterial and antioxidant activities of plant sources have attracted a wide range of interest across the world over the last decade. This is due to the growing concern for safe and alternative sources of antibacterial and antioxidant agents. In this study, we focused on the antibacterial and antioxidant activities and the chemical composition of a methanol extract from Viburnum sargentii seeds. The chemical composition was determined by gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS), and the antibacterial activity was screened by a disc diffusion assay. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) were determined using the microbroth dilution and spread plate method, respectively. The V. sargentii extract showed growth inhibition activity on all tested Gram-positive (Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, and Staphylococcus saprophyticus) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas putida, and Proteus vulgaris) pathogenic bacteria. The MIC and MBC ranged from 0.156~1.25 mg/ml for Gram-positive and 0.625~5.0 mg/ml for Gram-negative tested bacteria. The GC-MS results revealed the presence of several phytochemicals such as ${\beta}-sitosterol$ and vitamin E, which are known for their pharmacological applications. The antioxidant activities of V. sargentii extract were investigated by three different methods: the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl free radical scavenging assay, the reducing power assay, and the total antioxidant capacity assay. The results showed a concentration-dependent antioxidant potential for all three used methods. In sum, our findings suggest that the methanol extract of V. sargentii seeds has the potential to inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria and provide antioxidant compounds, making it therefore worthy of further investigation.
