  • Training for mothers and children first included information on water, ground, and air pollution, saving energy, and reducing trash. In the second phase, the family followed steps outlined in an environmental preservation guidebook. The experiment was of 16 weeks duration, conducted with 120 subjects, comprised of sixty 4-year-old children and their mothers. Measures included environmental preservation knowledge and the actual practice of environmental preservation on the part of the subjects. Mothers performed self-evaluations while teachers measured the children. SPSS was used for data collection and analysis. The results of this study indicate that the program increased perceptions on environmental preservation and the actual practice of the experimental group. The program application also resulted in meaningful co-relationships between perceptions and practice and between mothers and their children.

A total of 146 five-year-old preschoolers from eight child-care centers in Seoul and Kyoungki Province participated in this study. The following are the main results of this study. first, the higher the level of knowledge the preschoolers had, the more negative emotional attitude they displayed. Furthermore, the more negative emotional attitude they displayed, the higher the level of perceived behavior control they had. On the contrary, the relationships between knowledge and perceived behavior control varied with exposure situation to environmental pollution. Second, after the environmental education program was administered to the experimental group, the preschoolers from experimental group exhibited more knowledge, more negative emotional attitude, higher perceived behavior control and more active behavioral intention towards environmental pollution than those in the control group.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the meaning of the extracurricular activities in the early childhood education institutions because the discussions and the discrepancy between theoretical viewpoint and reality are gradually expanded. For this purpose, the classes of three early childhood education institutes were observed, and interviews with the instructors were conducted where extracurricular activities programs were implemented. The meanings of extracurricular activities in the early childhood education institutes were 'coexistence of newness and pleasure', 'meaning as learning', 'diverse teaching media experience' and 'inevitable limit' in the reality of formal lessons and other situations. Based on the results of this study, it is necessary to make comprehensive and complementary approaches between the formal curriculum and extracurricular activities for the future high quality extracurricular activity education. Continuous training and education of the instructor are required for better extracurricular activities.

  • This study analyzed a total of 37 studies about bi-lingulism and English education as a foreign language published in 8 academic journals in early childhood education or child development fields. Research topics, participants, methods, and variables in the studies were categorized and descriptively analyzed. The research findings which had been statistically investigated were also summarized. The most frequently studied research topics were children's development and English education program exposure, actual conditions of English education in preschool settings and effectiveness of specific English programs for preschool children. However, children's home characteristics were seldom included as research variables and no research investigated so called English preschools. Several studies reported that bi-lingual children may have different language development paths from mono-lingual children but they eventually have comparable language abilities to mono-lingual children. Also some studies reported that, when learning English as a foreign language in school settings, older children can handle more information regarding English than younger children, resulting in better outcomes of older children. Exposure to two languages in early childhood seems to contribute to young children's meta linguistic awareness but the long term effect of English education in early childhood should be further studied. Several English education programs for preschool settings were developed and the effectiveness were investigated. Even though most of them reported that their programs were effective to children's English ability or interests, the results should be carefully interpreted because their research designs and methods were not rigorous.

Based on the survey results, the teacher curriculum composition was classified into basic and advanced courses. The basic course included basic contents to understand maker education and maker space. The advanced course included information on how to use various tools, materials and digital media, how to conduct and evaluate maker education to apply maker education. The teacher curriculum composition for maker education can suggest basic directions for developing teacher education programs and strengthening the digital teaching competency of teachers in the future.
