  • A new diagnostics of plasma electron temperature and plasma density is introduced with the observation of the light emission along the tube of external electrode fluorescent lamps. With two different methods operating an external electrode fluorescent lamp of outer diameter 4.0 mm and length 860 mm for the back-light source of 37-inch LCD-TVs, the lighting modes and the plasma properties are investigated. In the center balance operation, the light-emission propagates simultaneously from both sides of the high voltage electrodes to the center of the lamp, while in conventional operation the light-emission propagates from the one end of a high voltage to the other ground electrode. In the operation value of luminance $10,000{\sim}15,000cd/m^2$, the electron plasma thermal energy $(kT_e)$ is about $1.3{\sim}2.7eV$ with the electron density $(n_e)$ is about $(1.6{\sim}3.6){\times}10^{16}m^{-3}$.

  • The distributions of the temperature and salinity in Kamak bay which has two channels and three sea bottom topographic parts were studied by taking the detailed hydrographic data at the ebb and flood during four seasons from May, 1988 to Feb., 1989. The general pattern of the distributions of characteristics which the temperature and salinity has in Kamak bay is basically formed by the topography and sea water movement of the bay. The changes of these distributions by seasons mainly come from the heating and cooling of the sea surface and the increase of the run-off. The bay has three remarkable water masses and the their general characteristics are follows: the inner bay water has a stagnation character influenced by the inland and the concave of the sea bottom in the north west, Yosu harbor water has an estuary character of the low salinity caused by the run-off of Somjin river and Yon Tung brooklet in the north east, and the outer bay water has an out-sea character, as it is located near by the big mouth in the south of the bay. The distributions of those water masses at the ebb and flood show some different features due to the flow patterns, and the daily changes of oceanic conditions at the vicinity of Hangdae-ri are so big that it may influence the habitation and production of the living things in the bay.

  • For the past decades, the analytic model for distributed surface roughness has been developed to improve the accuracy of the icing simulation code. However, it remains limitations to validate the developed model and determine the empirical parameters due to the absence of the quantitative experimental data which were focused on the surface state. To this end, the experimental study conducted to analyze the ice covered surface state from a micro-perspective. Above all, the tendency of the smooth zone width which occurs near the stagnation point has been quantitatively analyzed. It is observed that the smooth zone width is increased as growing the ambient temperature and freestream velocity. Next, the characteristics of the ice covered surface under rime and glaze ice have been analyzed. For rime ice conditions, ice elements are developed as the opaque circular corn in the opposite direction of freestream. The height and interval of each circular corn are increased as rising the ambient temperature. For glaze ice conditions, numerous lumps of translucent ice can be observed. This is because the beads formed by gravity concentrate and froze on the lower surface.

  • In order to measure aperture variation dependent on normal stress and to characterize on relationship between aperture variation and hydraulic conductivity this study measured apertures of rock fractures under a high resolution confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM) with application of five stages of uniaxial normal stresses. From this method the response of aperture can be continuously characterized on one specimen by different loads of normal stress. The results of measurements showed a rough geometry of fracture bearing non-uniform aperture. They also revealed different values of aperture variations according to the load stages on each position along a fracture due to the fracture roughness. Laboratory permeability tests were also conducted to evaluate the changes of permeability coefficients related to the aperture variations by different loads. The results of permeability tests revealed that the hydraulic conductivity was not reduced at a fixed rate with increase of normal load. Moreover, the rates of aperture variations did not match to those of hydraulic conductivity. The hydraulic conductivity calculated in this study did not follow the cubic law, representing that the parallel plate model is not suitable to express the fracture geometry corresponding to the results of aperture measurements under the CLSM.

  • For the proper management of high pressurized gas storage caverns, analysis of groundwater flow field and inflow quantity according to the groundwater head, gas storage pressure and water curtain head should be performed. The finite element method has been widely used for the groundwater flow analysis surrounding underground storage cavern because it can reflect the exact shape of cavern. But the various simulations according to the change of design factors such as the width of water curtain, shape of cavern etc. are not easy when elements were set up. To overcome these limitations, two dimensional groundwater flow model is established based on the boundary element method which compute the unknown variable by using only the boundary shape and condition. For the exact computation of drainage rate into cavern, the model test is performed by using the exact solution and pre-developed finite element model. The test result shows that the model could be used as an alternative to finite element model when various flow simulations are needed to determine the optimizing cavern shape and arrangement of water curtain holes and so forth.

  • The Web has taken a strong post as one of the media for advertisement for long time. The Internet has an advantage of an easy access to each of customers; the fractioning of the potential customers; the transcending of the time and space; and the utilizing of the multimedia. As such, the Web as a communication tool has not only all characteristics of the existing media but also the factors such as the sound, motion, and interaction. Therefore the Web designing should be much more flexible and open than any other medias. Nevertheless, most of the Webs being created currently appear to be simply perfunctory and functional. This is because a methodological aspect has not been rooted firmly as the Web design industry has been developed too rapidly, driven by the explosive demand. Therefore, this study is designed to demonstrate the approaching method to the Web-interface designing as an alternative for such methodological aspect. In other words, it is the very stillness-motion interface designing of the Web, based on the e-advertisement concept. The Web as one of the media for advertisement gives the heaviest weight to the users emotional aspects than any other media do. Therefore, it is very important to get the differentiation and impact in the Web-interface designing through the users emotional aspects.

  • Most of the landslides triggered by intensive rainfall on natural slope occur serious damages of human beings and properties. There have been many landslides since 1991 in Gyeonggi province. The influential factors are rainfall, topography, geology and soil properties. There were 660 landslides occurred by intensive rainfall as much as 250mm at Yongin and Anseong area from Tuly 19th to luly 21st,1991 This study surveyed location, topography, geology, geometry of the landslide and rainfall at the area and analyzed occurrence characteristics of the landslides. Most of the landslides occurred on the soil layer above the bed rock. They showed changes of landslide types from translational slides at the head part to flow at the central part. The landslides have relatively small magnitude of which length is shorter than 50m. In order to identify characteristics of landslides dependent on soil conditions, geotechnical properties of soil were evaluated by laboratory tests using soil samples which were collected on slided area and not-slided area. Soil properties of the slided area show high percentage of coarse material such as gravel and sand. However, soil of the not-slided area is mainly composed of fine material such as silt and clay. Permeability coefficients of the slided area are higher than those of the not-slided area.

  • The recognitions of geometrical characteristics and occurrence conditions are very important to evaluate the land-slides in natural terrains. In this paper, the geometrical characteristics of landslides are analyzed according to a geo-logical condition in three landslides areas. The three landslides areas are classified to the geological condition. The three landslides areas are Jangheung, Sangju and Pohang. The geology of Jangheung area, Sangju area and Pohang area is gneiss, granite, and the tertiary sedimentary rock, respectively. During a heavy rainfall of $150{\sim}588mm$ in these areas, 1,582 landslides have occurred in 1998. The geometrical characteristics according to the geological condition analyzed from the investigation of these landslides. The frequency of landslide is high exceedingly above 90% of a slope attitude, while the frequency is very low below 70%. The frequency of landslide is high exceedingly between $26^{\circ}$ and $30^{\circ}$ of slope angle, while the frequency is very low below $20^{\circ}$. The size of the landslides is ranged from several tens to several hundreds The length is ranged from 5 m to 300 m, and the width is ranged from 3 m to 50 m. Also, the depth is less than 1 m. Therefore, the landslides in these areas have small width, long length and shallow depth. The type of the landslides is changed from transitional slide at the scarp to debris flow at the low part of slope.

  • Vietnam CFBC fly ash has high CaO content and can be used as a solidification agent for soft ground improvement. However, most fly ash is treated as landfill or waste. In order to utilize fly ash as a solidification agent for soil improvement, the characteristics of fly ash must be accurately determined. In this study, laboratory tests were conducted on fly ash from four CFBC power plants to evaluate the utility of Vietnam fly ash as a solidification agent. As a result of analyzing the physical properties, it was analyzed that all four samples were suitable as material for solidification agent and have suitable particle size for the improvement of soft ground. As a result of analysis of chemical characteristics, it was analyzed that the fly ash of one place could be used as a solidification agent because of the high content of free-CaO. The remaining three fly ash was not suitable for use as a solidification agent due to low Free-CaO content. However, it has a chemical composition similar to that of general fly ash in Korea, so it can be recycled in various ways.

  • Since the decommissioning of nuclear plants and facilities, large quantities of slightly contaminated concrete waste have been generated. In Korea, the decontamination and decommissioning of the KRR-1, 2 at the KAERI have been under way. And concrete waste was generated about 800 drums of 200 L. The conditioning of concrete waste is needed for final disposal. The concrete waste is conditioned as follows: mortar using coarse and fine aggregates is filled void space after concrete rubble pre-placement into 200 L drum. Thus, this research has developed an optimizing mixing ratio of concrete waste, water, and cement and has evaluated characteristics of a cement waste form to meet the requirements specified in disposal site specific waste acceptance criteria. The results obtained from compressive strength test, leaching test, thermal cycling test of cement waste forms conclude that the concrete waste, water, and cement have been suggested to have 75:15:10wt% as the optimized mixing ratio. Also, the compressive strength of cement waste form was satisfied that including fine powder up to maximum 40wt% in concrete debris wastes about 75%. As a result of scale-up test, the mixture of concrete waste, water, and cement is 75:10:15wt% meet the satisfied compressive strength because the free water increased with and increased in particle size.
