  • This study aimed to examine the mediating effects of social withdrawal between adolescents' mobile phone dependence and the sense of community, and to secure the evidence data for adolescents' mobile phone dependence intervention. Among the 7th year data for the 4th grade students in the Korean Children & Youth Panel Survey(KCYPS), 1,979 students were included. The results showed that mobile phone dependence had a significant effect on the decrease in the sense of community and influenced the sense of community through social withdrawal. These results imply that positive intervention to reduce social withdrawal is needed and it can improve the sense of community in youth. Also, when we deal with weakening in the sense of community, we should consider convergent intervention in psychological and social aspects which deal with dependency, social withdrawal, and the sense of community.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the structural relationship between depression, self-esteem, and social withdrawal that affect academic helplessness in adolescents. The study sample was 2,265 first-year students of high school in the fourth year (2021) data from the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey 2018. In this study, data were analyzed by a structural equation model based on the partial least squares method using SmartPLS 3.0. Results indicated that depression and social withdrawal had a significant positive effect on adolescents' academic helplessness, and self-esteem had a significant negative effect. In addition, social withdrawal had a significant positive mediating effect on the relationship between depression and academic helplessness. Therefore, it is required strategies that consider the relationship between depression, self-esteem, and social withdrawal to approach adolescents' academic helplessness.

  • This study investigated developmental pathways mediating effects of child abuse on peer rejection. Participants were 904 poor children aged 10-15 from 16 nationwide cities/provinces who receive financial sponsorship from Childfund in cooperation with the Ministry for Health, Welfare and Family Affairs. Structural equation modeling was employed for statistical analyses. Results showed that child abuse was directly associated with heightened risk of rejection by peers; the relationship was indirectly mediated by aggression and cognitive ability. The hypothesized partially mediated model had a better model fit than the fully mediated model. Aggression and low cognitive ability, significant effects of abuse, were associated with peer rejection. Social withdrawal, also associated with child abuse, did not account for the association between abuse and peer rejection.

  • This study examined the relations among toddlers' temperament, maternal parenting, and toddlers' social withdrawal and aggression. One hundred and two mothers of two-year-old children (49 boys and 53 girls) completed questionnaires and Q-sort. Data were analyzed by correlation analyses and regression analyses. First, toddlers' pleasure was negatively related to social withdrawal, while social fearfulness was positively related to social withdrawal. Also, toddlers' activity level and anger proneness were positively related to aggression. Second, the encouragement of independence in maternal parenting was negatively linked to toddlers' social withdrawal, and maternal rejection was positively linked to toddlers' aggression. Third, toddlers' pleasure and interest/persistence were positively associated with mothers' encouragement of independence, and toddlers' activity level and anger proneness were positively associated with mothers' rejection. Finally, mothers' encouragement of independence acted as a mediator between toddlers' pleasure and social withdrawal. Also, toddlers' activity level and anger proneness influenced aggression through maternal rejection. These results indicate that toddlers' temperament and maternal parenting play crucial roles in the development of toddlers' maladaptive behaviors such as social withdrawal and aggression.

  • In this paper, the effects of parental neglect and abuse on school adjustment mediated by social withdrawal in adolescents were examined using a sample of 2,163 second grade middle school students(1,096 boys and 1,067 girls) from the Korean Child and Youth Panel Survey(KCYPS) data set. All research variables were measured using self-reported questionnaires. They were analyzed by means of Structural Equation Modeling. The results indicated that parents' abuse had no direct effect, but there was an indirect effect on adolescents' school adjustment mediated by adolescents' social withdrawal. Parental neglect had a direct effect on adolescents' school adjustment and also had an indirect effect on adolescents' school adjustment mediated by social withdrawal. The results indicate that parental neglect is a more significant contributor than adolescents' social withdrawal on adolescents' school adjustment. The results of this study show that parenting attitude, more specifically parental neglect, tend to be more important factors on school adjustment compared to adolescents' psychological problems, such as social withdrawal in adolescence. Taken together, these findings suggest that interventions aimed at improving parental neglect and adolescents' social withdrawal need to be emphasized if adolescents are to better adjust to school life.

In this study, a multiple regression analysis was conducted to investigate the factors affecting depression in 1,881 1st grade students in middle school, using the 2016 Panel Investigation for Children and Adolescents of Korea. The attention problems, aggression, physical symptoms, and social withdrawal perceived by adolescents had significant effects on the depression. Out of them, the physical symptoms had the greatest effects on the depression. When the attention problems, aggression, physical symptoms, and social withdrawal of adolescents were higher, the symptoms of depression were increased, which explained 54.1% of adolescents' depression. Such results of this study could be helpful for the educational support and practical intervention for the enhancement of mental health of adolescents.

  • The aim of this study is to suggest the direction of psychosocial intervention by investigation. To this end, this study examined the moderating effect of peer attachment and patients' positive attitude on the relationship between social withdrawal and life satisfaction of adolescents. Data was obtained from the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey, and study subjects included 2,409 first grade middle school students. Data was analyzed using the SPSS 25 program, and frequency analysis, descriptive statistical analysis, correlation analysis and hierarchical regression analysis were conducted. The results of the study are as follows: First, psychological withdrawal in the social relationship had a significant negative effect on the life satisfaction of adolescents. Second, peer attachment did not have a moderating effect on the relationship between social withdrawal and life satisfaction of adolescents. Third, positive parenting attitude had a moderating effect on the relationship between social withdrawal and life satisfaction of adolescents. The high-positive parenting attitude group showed less decline in life satisfaction even if social withdrawal was high compared to the low-positive parenting attitude group. Based on these results, we provide effective direction of intervention to elevate the life satisfaction of adolescents experiencing social withdrawal.
