  • This paper presents a particle-structure collision model for topology optimization, which requires sensitivity analysis. Therefore, a new model that incorporates sensitivity analysis is needed. The proposed particle-structure collision model conducts sensitivity analysis for topology optimization. To evaluate the accuracy of the proposed model, it was applied to a simplified one-dimensional collision problem. Optimization of the final positions of particles using topology optimization through this model confirmed the suitability of the proposed approach. These results demonstrate that it is possible to consider particle-structure collision in topology optimization.

  • In this paper, we have derived a continuum-based adjoint design sensitivity of general performance functionals with respect to Young' modulus and heat conduction coefficient for steady-state nonlinear thermoelastic problems. An adjoint equation for temperature and displacement fields is defined for the efficient computation of the coupled field design sensitivity. Through numerical examples, we investigated the mesh dependency of the topology optimization method in the thermoelastic problems. Also, comparing the dominant loading cases of thermal and mechanical ones, the loading dependency of topology design optimization in coupled multi-physics problems is investigated.

  • The objective of sensitivity analyses is to identify critical variables of structural models and how their variability impacts mechanical response results. The sensitivity analyses have been used as significant basis data for practical applications of measuring and reinforcing fragile building structures. This study presents several sensitivity analysis methods for topological optimum designs of linear elastostatic structural systems. Numerical examples for structural analyses and topological optimum modeling demonstrate the reliability of sensitivities formulated in the present study.

  • A level set based topological shape optimization using extended B-spline basis functions is developed for steady-state heat conduction problems. The only inside of complicated domain identified by the level set functions is taken into account in computation, so we can remove the effects of domain outside parts in heat conduction problem. The solution of Hamilton-Jacobi equation leads to an optimal shape according to the normal velocity field determined from the sensitivity analysis, minimizing a thermal compliance while satisfying a volume constraint. To obtain exact shape sensitivity, the precise normal and curvature of geometry need to be determined using the level set and B-spline basis functions. Using topological derivative concept, the nucleation of holes for topological changes can be made whenever and wherever necessary during the optimization.

  • Design sensitivity analysis and topology design optimization for a piezoelectric crystal resonator are developed. The piezoelectric crystal resonator is deformed mechanically when subjected to electric charge on the electrodes, or vice versa. The Mindlin plate theory with higher-order interpolations along thickness direction is employed for analyzing the thickness-shear vibrations of the crystal resonator. Thin electrode plates are masked on the top and bottom layers of the crystal plate in order to enforce to vibrate it or detect electric signals. Although the electrode is very thin, its weight and shape could change the performance of the resonators. Thus, the design variables are the bulk material densities corresponding to the mass of masking electrode plates. An optimization problem is formulated to find the optimal topology of electrodes, maximizing the thickness-shear contribution of strain energy at the desired motion and restricting the allowable volume and area of masking plates. The necessary design gradients for the thickness-shear frequency(eigenvalue) and the corresponding mode shape(eigenvector) are computed very efficiently and accurately using the analytical design sensitivity analysis method using the eigenvector expansion concept. Through some demonstrative numerical examples, the design sensitivity analysis method is verified to be very efficient and accurate by comparing with the finite difference method. It is also observed that the optimal electrode design yields an improved mode shape and thickness-shear energy.

  • In this paper we perform a linearized buckling analysis using the Kirchhoff plate theory and the von Karman nonlinear strain-displacement relation. Design sensitivity analysis(DSA) expressions for plane elasticity and buckling problems are derived with respect to Young's modulus and thickness. Using the design sensitivity, we can formulate the topology optimization method for minimizing the compliance and maximizing eigenvalues. We develop a topology optimization method applicable to plate buckling problems using the prestress for buckling analysis. Since the prestress is needed to assemble the stress matrix for buckling problem using the von Karman nonlinear strain, we introduced out-of-plane motion. The design variables are parameterized into normalized bulk material densities. The objective functions are the minimum compliance and the maximum eigenvalues and the constraint is the allowable volume. Through several numerical examples, the developed DSA method is verified to yield very accurate sensitivity results compared with the finite difference ones and the topology optimization yields physically meaningful results.

  • From the numerical results of density-based topology design optimization, a CAD geometric model is constructed and fabricated using 3D printer to experimentally validate the optimal design. In the process of topology design optimization, we often experience checkerboard phenomenon and complicated branches, which could result in the manufacturing difficulty of the obtained optimal design. Sensitivity filtering and morphology methods are used to resolve the aforementioned issues. Identical volume fraction is used in both numerical and experimental models for precise validation. Through the experimental comparison of stiffness in various designs including the optimal design, it turns out that the optimal design has the highest stiffness and the experimental result of compliance matches very well with the numerical one.

  • Topology optimization problem requires numerous repeated evaluations of objective function and design sensitivity for elements within design domain with various density distributions. The recently proposed two-level condensation scheme(TLCS) is very promising for the construction of reduced system and for an accurate and efficient analysis concerned about eigenvalue and dynamic problems. We used the two-level dynamic condensation scheme for the analysis and sensitivity computation part in the structural topology optimization problem. The results of the topology optimization for the reduced system show the TLCS provides high accuracy and computation efficiency compared to the full scale system within engineering accuracy.
