Studies an the Egg Parasite, Paracentrobia andoi Ishii (Hymenoptera : Trichogrammatidae) of Green Rice Leafhopper, Nephotettix cinticeps Uhler (1) (끝동매미충 난기생봉 (Paracentrobia andoi)에 관한 연구(I))

  • The trichogrammatidae ego parasite of the green rice leafhopper (GRLH), paracentrobia andoi, were investigated to know their parasitic activities after overwintering in the paddy banks and fallow fields, their seasonal variation and per cent parasitism in the paddy fields of Gyeongnam provincial O.R.D. at Jinju from 1982 to 1984. The parasitic activities of Paracentrobia andoi after overwintering in the Paddy banks in early Masch were high and tended to decrease remarkably since early April by moving to the fallow fields. The parasitic rate of paracentrobia andoi on GRLH was $21\%$ between late April and early May. the peak of egg laying period of GRLH. The per cent parasitism of the wasps in fallow fields was an average of $0\%$ in Gyeochang and Namji and $9.6-29.2\%$ in Namhae, Kimhae and Jinju. The parasitic activites of Paracentrobia andoi had three peakrs in paddy field, however, the highest peak was ovserved between mid- August and early October. The per cent egg parasitism of Paracentrobia andoi was an average of $16.5\%$ on second generation of Nepotettix cinctireps and $36.7\%$ on third generation of the leafhopper.

Studies on the Bionomics of the Black-Back Prominent, Clostera anastomosis (L.) (Lepidoptera; Notodonitidae) (버들재주나방의 생태에 관한 연구)

  • The results obtained are as follows. 1. The black-back Prominent has three to four generations in a year depending on the ecological conditions. The first adult appears from the middle of May to early June. 2. The average longevities of aduts were 5.8 days for the male and 5.9 days for female. 3. The period of eggs were about 4 days. 4. The larval period was about 17 2 days. 5. The pupal period was about 5 to 8 days. 6. The width of the head capsule ranged from 0.37mm for the 1st instar to 2.45mm for the last instar. 7. The larvae fed $95cm^2$ for the female and $60cm^2$ for the male in the laboratory condition. 8. The estimated number of the frass evacuated by the larvae were 682 in the laboratory and 663 in the field. 9. The sizes of the frass varied from 0.11mm to 2.46mm in length and 0,05mm to 2.92mm in diameter according to the larval instars. 10. The number of eggs in ovary were about 400. 11. This insect overwinters as a young larva.

  • Xylotrechus rusticus (L.) is an important pest of poplars in Korea. The bionomics of the insect were studied to give some scientific bases for a development of the sound control measures. This study was carried out in the field and laboratory during the period from 1968 to 1969. The results ostained are as follows; The gray tiger longicorn has one generation in a year and overwinters as a larva. The adult appears during periods from the middle May to the early July, with peak in the early June and the eggs were laid in a trunk from the early June to the middle July. The mean body length of the adult was 17mm for the male, 21mm for the female and about 20mm for the pupa. The average number of eggs in an ovary were about 172 and about 2mm in length. The larva of the insect feed on the cambium under neath the bark, the diameter of the adult exit hole was about 5-6mm and 5cm in depth.

유기 배 과수원의 생물 종 다양성 연구

  • 유기 배 과수원의 생물종 다양성을 조사한 결과, 월동 직후 유기배 과수원에서는 13종 503마리, 관행 과수원에서 11종 145마리의 토양 미소동물이 채집되었다. 채집된 종류는 거미, 지네, 노래기와 곤충들이다. 유기과수원에는 특히 응애와 거미가 많이 채집되었으며 특히 곤충 중에서 톡토기는 247마리로 관행에 비해 7배가 많이 채집되었다. 또한 생태지수인 종다양도가 관행 1.383에 비해 1.589로 더 높았다. 서식지별 분포를 보면 나무 바로 밑의 개체수와 종수가 더 많아 배나무 뿌리를 중심으로 생활하고 있음을 확인하였다. 여름철 토양동물의 분포는 달팽이, 지렁이를 비롯한 미소 동물들이 유기인증 과수원에는 24종 632마리, 관행에서는 15종 340마리가 채집되어 유기인증 농가에서 월등히 많은 토양동물이 살고 있었으며 종다양도역시 유기농가 2.021로 관행인 1.652보다 높았다. 청목(1985)의 자연도 평가 A그룹종은 환경저항성이 낮아 쉽게 소멸되는 그룹으로 애지네, 노래기 땅지네 등이 여기에 속하는데 유기농가에서 개체수들이 더 많이 채집되었다. 추락트랩을 이용한 조사에서 딱정벌레 중 점박이먼지벌레가 관행 과수원에서 월등히 높았으며 유기농가에서는 큰넓적송장벌레가 채집되어 이들 종이 지표종으로 선발될 수 있을 것으로 보인다. 또한 거미류 중에 수풀오소리거미가 많이 채집되었으며 채찍늑대거미, 꼬마게거미, 점게거미등은 유기농가에서만 채집되어 추후 이들 종이 지표종으로 선발될 가능성이 있었다. 말레이트랩에서는 고치벌과 맵시벌 종류가 많이 채집되었고 파리류에서는 초파리가 많았으며 털검정파리는 유기인증 농가에서 만이 채집되었다. 유아등을 이용한 야간 곤충류를 채집한 결과 유기농가에서 16종 201마리, 관행 9종 42마리가 채집되어 야간에 활동하는 곤충류 역시 유기농가가 많았다. 추락트랩과 말레이트랩모두 유기인증 농가에서 종다양도가 관행보다 높았으며 유아등 채집에서도 마찬가지 결과를 보여 유기배 과수원이 토양 뿐 아니라 배를 중심으로 생활하는 모든 동물들의 종 다양성이 우수함을 알 수 있었다.

Occurrence and Ecological Characteristics of Red Pepper Anthracnose (고추 탄저병의 발병 생태 특성)

  • Occurrence of anthracnose on red pepper fruit was examined at 6 red pepper-growing regions including Yecheon, Andong, Euisong, Cheongsong, and Ponghwa in Kyungbuk province, Korea in 1999. The disease occurred firstly June 13 at Cheongsong, progressed gradually thereafteri and increased rapidly from late August. The average disease incidence with mid September was 30.4%. There was no significant difference in disease incidence among the regions examined. Correlation coefficient analysis of the disease incidence with weather factors revealed that it was significantly related to relative humidity, precipitation, rainy days, and duration of continuous rainy days. Most fungal isolates from the diseased fruit were Colletotichum gloeosporioides. In the in field experiment, unmature fruit was somewhat more susceptible to the disease than mature fruit. In the field experiment, the disease occurred severely in open fields, having the disease incidence of 12.1%; however, no disease was observed in the rain-proof fields. The anthracnose on red pepper fruit developed earlier and more severely in the successive cropping field with red pepper than the field having other crops. Removal of infected plant debris also delayed and reduced the disease occurrence, suggesting that plant debris infested with the anthracnose fungus serve as a primary inoculum source which may govern the severity of the disease in the field.

  • The purplish stem borer (Sesamia inferens Walker). which was infested in southern part of Korea. attack rice plant. and its damage appear quite serious in some districts. This study was conducted to investigate the life history. seasonal abundance and control of the insect pest. The pest overwinter as larvae and it seems to have 2-3 generations in a year. It takes 56.6 days in the shortest one while the longest one takes 74.6 days. Three peaks of moth appearance are May-June. end of July and end of August, respectively. The effectivencess of insecticides was compared with EPNec $45\%$ and the different granular insecticides in pot experiment. In the result. M. Parathion G. EPNec, Diazinon G and Lebaycid G showed good control of the pest. with the infestation of $12.0,\; 22.9\%,\; 24.7\%,\; and\; 27.3\%$ respectively, while the untreated has $62.6\%$

  • Monochoria vaginalis var. plantaginea (Pontederiaceae) is one of the most problematic weed in the rice field in Korea. Tanysphyrus (Tanysphyroides) major was selected as a potential biological control agent for M. vaginalis. Continuous rearing of T. (T.) major was carried out from 2006 to 2007, and its morphological characteristics and ecological characteristics were investigated. This species has a single generation per year, over-wintering as an adult stage. The emergence of adults starts in later June and last until September. These observations indicate that T. (T.) major takes $22{\pm}0.7$ days to develop from egg to adulthood. Host specificity test showed that finally selected this species was suitable candidates for the biological control of M. vaginalis var. plantaginea since it showed negative host specificity against major 60 test crops.

  • This study was conducted for investigation of habitat and development of indoor-rearing conditions of peacock butterfly, Inachis io (Linnaeus). Three different region, Mt. Kwangduk-san, Mt. Hae-san and Mt. Taebaek-san in Kangwon-do, was selected for investigation of domestic distribution and ecological environment of peacock butterfly. In result, there are many butterflies in the only two region, Mt. Kwangduk-san and Mt. Hae-san. On 16th April, 4 overwintered butterflies were observed in Mt. Hae-san. At the end of June and early in July, 51 individual next generation's butterflies were observed in Mt. Kwangduk-san and Mt. Hae-san. For development of indoor-rearing conditions, collected each 15 male and female peacock butterflies was reared in a room condition. Female butterflies laid eggs in the egg cluster on the underside of host-plant's leaves, Urtica angustifolia Fisch., in the ovipositioning room. We took 11 egg cluster with average $404.6{\pm}23.6$ eggs. Hatchablity of eggs was 92.3%, and the eggs hatched within $5.1{\pm}0.9$ days from the day of oviposition under high temperature, long day condition($25^{\circ}C$, 14L:10D). The larval period was $18.3{\pm}1.0$ days under high temperature, long day condition($25^{\circ}C$, 14L:10D), showing 81.0% pupal ratio. The head width of each developmental larval stage were $0.37{\pm}0.01mm$(1st instar), $0.66{\pm}0.02mm$(2nd instar), $1.07{\pm}0.05mm$(3rd instar), $1.81{\pm}0.07$(4th instar), $2.76{\pm}0.08$(5th instar). The pupal period was $8.4{\pm}0.6$ days, and the emergence rate was 87.5%.

  • The author studied on the bionomics of Oriental moth. Cnidocampa flavescens WALKER, damaging to the persimmon tree n the southern part of Korea from 1964 to 1965. The results can be summarized as follows; 1. Emergence peak period of Oriental moth was mid-June in Taegu district and eggs are deposited on the opposite side of persimmon tree leaf. Specially most of eggs are deposited on the terminal part of opposite side and peak period s also mid-June. 2. Hatched Percentage of eggs was $84.4\%$ in 1964 while $96.1\%$ in 1965 at the rearing room. Mean egg Period was $5.984\pm0.162$ in 1964 while $6.262\pm0.094$ days in 1965. Thus during two years, the egg period was about 6 days. 3. In the growth ratio of Oriental moth fed on various host plants persimmon tree, Acer negund, Hazel-wood and Platanus, the best growth ratio was shown on the leaf of Hazel-wood from 1st till 3rd instar, but, on the contrary, persimmon tree was the best from 4th till the last instar. The growth ratio of head width was also the same tendency as the body length above mentioned. Individuals fed on the leaf of platanus were dead after 20 days. 4. Oriental moth has one generation a year and molts 6 times. The first molting occurred in 5 hours after hatched, and the other moltings were done at f days intervals. After 3 days since the last molting, larvae made the non for over-winter in it. 5. As the bristles on the process of larval body are different from each position and instar, judgement of instars are possible by the counting of bristles on the body according to the Table 8. Specially the bristle of L. 2., D. 2, 3 ,8. 10. and L. 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, are perfectly different from each instar. From these bristles, instars can be recognized easily. 6. Pupation of larvae in the over-wintered cocoon on the stem of persimmon tree was done in mid-May and continued will early June when emergence will take place. 7. Mean number of eggs in the ovary was $1325.5\pm2.7182$

A Study on the Use of Wintering Habitats of Water Birds Arriving at Coastal Wetlands in Jeollanam Province, Korea (전라남도 연안습지에 도래하는 수조류의 월동지 이용에 관한 연구)

  • This study was conducted to survey the population of water birds wintering at the seven coastal wetlands of Jeollanam province including Suncheon Bay and Yeongsan Lake, from 2000 through 2003. The 90 species and 857,570 individuals in total were sighted at the seven survey sites. We classified the wintering water birds into seventeen groups of taxa based on the similar ecological attributes, among which, eight groups were found to inhabit the water surface or riparian areas. Classified groups that showed higher rate of using bay areas than that of lake areas were in the order of waders, gulls and swans. On the other hand, the groups that showed higher rate of using lake areas than that of using bay areas were revealed in the order of dabbling ducks, grebes and geese. In conclusion, there was a difference in the pattern between the two classified groups. As a result of the UPGMA cluster analysis using CCs ($S{\varnothing}rensen'a$ index of similarity and Ro (Horn's index of community overlap), the results showed that Suncheon Bay had the most unique species formation out of the seven areas. Bay and lake areas were different from each other in the formation of species and Individuals. As a result of combining the index rank according to the maximum aggregate count, the Suncheon Bay is ranked the highest in importance of the habitats for water birds, followed by the order of Boseong-Deukryang Bay, Gangjin Bay, Gocehongam Lake, Geumho Lake, Yeomam Lake, and Yeongsan Lake. Considered overall, the importance of the bay areas was relatively higher than that of reclaimed lake areas.
